About this audiobook
From the author of the extraordinary Edgar-nominated debut novel Black Fridays, a sensational story of murder and financial corruption - and one man's continued search for redemption.
William von Becker ran one of the largest privately held investment banks in North America, until the bottom fell out, and the whole edifice was demonstrated to be a fraud.
After von Becker dies in prison, financial investigator Jason Stafford is hired by his family. There is still a lot of missing money out there, he's told, and they want Stafford to find it before the Feds do - and certain other parties, some of whom are nowhere near as scrupulous in their methods. Bad things start happening to the people Stafford talks to. Soon bad things are happening to him as well.
Making it worse, his treacherous ex-wife has come to town, ostensibly to visit their young son. Stafford suspects there's more to it than that, but even he has no idea how much that visit is about to change all their lives - and send him off to the next chapter of his life.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The second book in the Jason Stafford series. Jason Stafford is an ex con from Wall Street. He got caught and did time. Now he is out and doing consultant work for other traders on Wall Street that get caught by the SEC. He is also a father to an Autistic child. Mortal Bonds has Jason helping a very rich family known as the von Becker's. He is hired by Virgil. I found the story very slow going at first. You go back and forth between Jason investigating and taking care of his son. Then his ex-wife decides to come into town because she wants to get to know their child. Now she is sober.I found those parts of the story interesting and yet boring at the same time. I just wanted to hit Angie upside her head. She was annoying and seemed to have a chip on her shoulder. There is one good thing she did in this book.Jason's life and family are threatened by someone in the von Becker's family. Once he figures it all out is when everything comes to an end.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is the second book in the Jason Stafford series. Jason Stafford, out of prison and trying to make a living for himself and his autistic son, is hired to find money that was hidden by the head of their family after he went to prison on investment fraud charges. To make things even more tense for Jason while he is working on this, Jason's ex-wife comes to town. She is ill-equipped to deal with an autistic son, and has little patience for the progress he has made so far. There is lots of fast paced action, and it will keep you glued to the book until the very end. This was the first book I had read by this author, but I am already planning to read the first book in this series. I look forward to many more works by this author!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Like a good wine, Mr. Sears gets better with every outing!! Mortal Bonds is a exciting read, which keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout! Mr. Sears continues to develop his characters, Jason Stafford and the Kid, much to my delight. This is a don't miss thriller, a great summer (or fall) read! looking forward to reading about Jason and the Kid for a long time.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Sears does a good job explaining financial intricacies but the good guys are too good to be true and the bad guys too numerous. The plot resolves nicely and the joys and frustrations of parenting an autistic child are authentically illustrated.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book was such a good read, fast paced with twist and turns that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Jason and his son are so likable as are all the recurring characters. I love how caring Jason is with the kid (as he likes to be called). While Jason is busy trying to find money for the von Becker family his ex-wife comes to town and starts trouble. It was fun seeing how he handled everything and how he wrapped everything up at the end. Even though this is the second Jason Stafford book it was my first and I already have ordered the first book to read. I won this from LibraryThing and I highly recommend it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Another Great Jason Stafford Novel. Jason finds himself in another job position helping out the Von Becker family. However with all the twists and turns in his investigation he finds himself and everyone close to him in danger. Lots of twists and turns and still the growing bond all along with his loving autistic son Jason Jr. "The Kid". I will definately be searching for a 3rd installment.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5There is no sophomore jinx for Michael Sears in this strong follow up to his Edgar Award finalist book Black Fridays. The story revolves around Jason Stafford who is enlisted to find millions of dollars of funds embezzled and laundered to the point that it seems they have disappeared. What I like about the book is the balance of time spent between his personal and family life with that of his pursuit of the funds. We find he has a girlfriend, a troublesome ex wife that shows up and an autistic son. As he gets closer to solving the mystery he finds that he is putting his family at risk. The book is smart and well written but I have a pet peeve I can't quite get over. That is that Jason and all the other characters only refer to his son as "the kid" throughout the book. This is a smart enough character that he should speak of his son by name.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I received this book through LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program. It's the second book in a series about Jason Stafford, a former Wall Street executive convicted of fraud and sentenced to prison. This story centers around Stafford's search for money hidden away by William von Becker, who ran a large investment firm that turned out to be a Ponzi scheme. His family has hired Stafford to find money that von Becker has squirreled away unbeknownst to the Feds. This is a fast-paced mystery/thriller that kept me engaged, and I read through the book quite quickly. It's typically not the type of plot that I find interesting, but I found myself having trouble putting the book down. I am already looking forward to the next title in the series.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Michael Sears garnered an Edgar nomination for the first book, Black Fridays, in his series about Jason Stafford and the Kid. Jason Stafford earned a stretch in prison for financial wheeling and dealing in a Wall Street firm. To save some of his gains he divorced his wife, and he also allowed her to retain custody of their autistic son. When he was released from prison, his wife had become an alcoholic, his son was in the care of his grandmother, and there was no hope of access to the funds he had squirreled away with his wife. Unable to work in a Wall Street firm, he obtained a consulting gig. The adventure begins as he juggles his complicated personal life with machinations that escalate from financial to physical dangers. The second book in the series, Mortal Bonds, picks up where Black Fridays left off in Stafford's life. Requests for consulting work have disappeared, so when the von Becker family invites Jason out to their Long Island estate for a discussion about potential work on a project, Jason jumps at the chance. The now-deceased William, head of family, left his affairs in disarray when his Ponzi scheme collapsed. Rumors abound about billions being hidden away. The number of people who want to find that money, including everyone from several agencies of the government and the family to employees and more, grows daily. Sears has created memorable and appealing characters in Jason Stafford and his son. Combined with plot twists and well paced writing, the novel launches the reader on a heart-stopping trajectory. Warning: This is a compulsive page-turner!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Mortal Bonds by Michael Sears is the second in a series. Black Friday was a very good book but Mortal Bonds is even better as it continues the life of Jason Stafford. Once again the interplay of politics, money and power are described as Sears takes you deeper into the world of finance and corruption. Can millions of funds be recovered, can Stafford help with his son who has autism and how will his dangerous profession have an impact on his complicated and expanded family? This is a fast moving and tension filled story and I look forward to reading more of this series. I give it a 4 star rating.Thank you to Librarything for review copy of this book.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is one of those books that the characters are all very interesting. The story keeps you hooked. The writing is good enough to allow you to get lost in it. However, at the end I'm not sure how satisfying it all is. I read it over the Thanksgiving holiday and kept pulling me along enough that I'll give another Sears novel a shot.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Mortal Bonds is the second book in the Jason Stafford series. The story involves a very complicated Ponzi scheme and Stafford is hired to find out where the missing money could be after the death of the father, Mr. Von Becker. With many twists and turns, this book is a challenge to read and stay in tune with all the characters involved. Stafford is also very involved with The Kid, his autistic son for whom he has sole custody. His ex-wife and her family re-enter the picture to make the story more confusing. I found the first book in the series, Black Fridays, much more spellbinding and fascinating to read, but that is just my opinion. I am pleased that LibraryThing selected me to review this book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jason Stafford from Black Fridays is back – once again using his knowledge of finance (as well as his first-hand experience with crime), this time to locate some money missing after a huge Ponzi scheme is discovered. Jason is an appealing lead character, trying hard to be a good father to his “beautiful son”, a six-year-old autistic boy, as well as to be an attentive boyfriend and even a patient ex-husband. While he does make mistakes, he thinks about how his actions and decisions impact these relationships, he learns, and he reads others well and places his trust appropriately. In addition to his employment background he also uses the characteristics that made him a good trader (quick assessment of risk, decisiveness, suitable rewards for those who help him achieve his goals) in his detective work, which helps make his character especially believable. The writing is great—he integrates many small insights into the story without slowing it down. You’ll learn a lot about autism and high-level finance. I particularly enjoyed the complexity of the characters: just as Jason is a criminal but also a decent person there are people here who are greedy or deceptive, but some rise to the occasion and do the right thing when it counts. And those that don’t—those get what’s coming to them.
