While "Get in the Game" is listed as a self-help/business on the cover, it reads like a mini-autobiography of Cal Ripken, Jr. Ripken, with the assistance of Donald T. Phillips, writes about eight elements that he attributed in not only making a difference in his legendary baseball career but also his successful transition to business. Within each of the eight chapters detailing each element, Ripken shares stories and situations from his early life and baseball career that are examples of the featured element. At the end of the book, Ripken his a brief overview of his post-baseball life and how the eight elements have influenced his transition into business. At less than 300 pages, the book reads quick but is very thought provoking.

I was skeptical about reading a book written by Cal Ripken Jr. For one thing; although I currently reside about 35 miles south of Baltimore I am not an Orioles fan. (As a transplant from the Boston area, it shouldn't take you more than a millisecond to determine where my loyalties reside.) Secondly, after attempting to read Idiot by Johnny Damon, I came to the hasty conclusion that baseball players make terrible authors. But since I received the book for free through a Comcast promotion I thought I would give it a cursory glance. I was pleasantly surprised by the contents of the book.In addition to being a HOF baseball player, Cal is an astute businessman. He was able to blend sound business practices together with the nostalgic retelling of moments from his not too far removed baseball career. This book contains enough stories of America's Pastime to keep any baseball fan entertained all the while providing the reader with some sound business advise.
