About this audiobook

The adventures of an American hacker in Medieval England continue as Martin Banks takes his next step on the journey toward mastering his reality-altering powers and fulfilling his destiny.

A month has passed since Martin helped to defeat the evil programmer Jimmy, and things couldn’t be going better. Except for his love life, that is. Feeling distant and lost, Gwen has journeyed to Atlantis, a tolerant and benevolent kingdom governed by the Sorceresses, and a place known as a safe haven to all female time-travelers.

Thankfully, Martin and Philip are invited to a summit in Atlantis for all of the leaders of the time-traveler colonies, so this could be Martin’s chance to try again with Gwen. Of course, this is Martin Banks we’re talking about, so murder, mystery, and high intrigue all get in the way of a guy who just wants one more shot to get the girl.

The follow-up to the hilarious Off to Be the Wizard, Scott Meyer’s Spell or High Water proves that no matter what powers you have over time and space, you can’t control rotten luck.

This was exactly what I expected, but more... exactly what I wanted. This is a continuation of the first book, filled with the same type of puns and humor and writing style. It is not something to take seriously, but at the same time is a unique and fresh take on the fantasy adventure trope.

If you like humor mixed with fantasy and a little bit of sci-fi thrown in the mix you should really enjoy this book, and probably the entire series.

This book was awesome.. I had been looking for some time for a witty, clever audio book that was light hearted but still dramatic and morally relevant. I do like Terry Pratchett but sometimes his books are too complex with multitudes of characters for me to keep track of. This one was nice and straight forward but also very deep.

Once again, Meyer is able to put out a very funny title in the series. The last one had me cracking up laughing and this one had quite a number of literal laugh out loud moments. The plot pretty much picks up at the end of the last book and feels very fluid. It's nice to know certain authors actually care about a coherent story line when they write a series.

The story arc and pacing are good and the ability to switch between a couple of different characters now breaks up the plot some. Meyer likes his end of chapter cliff hangers. The main mystery of the story wasn't as revealed as I would have liked it. It's nice when the author can set forth some clues that you can follow along with the characters to try and figure out. It makes the end a lot more fun to see if you were correct or had missed anything. The reveal does make sense, there just weren't too many clues along the way. The plot line with Jimmy was actually more enjoyable than I thought it was going to turn out to be and wasn't your typical resolve. Main character Martin is still funny than ever. I did miss some of the figuring out of the computer program and creating spells that we got of in the last book.

I will be picking up the third book without a doubt. I enjoyed this book quite a bit. Final Grade - A-

The first one I only sort of liked because it had some whizbang milieu with hacking a “uber-file” so you can cast magic spells, like flying and fireballs. But this one is much more boring. All the whizbang stuff has been explained so what else is there? Well, the last book was rather light on female characters, so let’s head over to Atlantis, where all the women who discovered magic are. No, they don’t live anywhere else. They’d rather stay together. And they all get along. And have two types of husbands–one for companionship and one for sex. Good times. I wonder what gender the author was. It’s trying to be some kind of murder mystery, but that’s hard when A) everyone is immortal B) everyone’s an omnipotent magician C) you’ve got time travel too, which blasts anything suspenseful out of the plot because now all things are possible. What ends up happening is a whole bunch of dull padding that’s supposed to be budding romance. But it’s as passionate as a trackball mouse. I don’t think the author is very good at writing either female characters or interesting characters. In any case, I don’t think I’m going to read the third one.

Nice follow-up. If you liked the first part of the series, you should enjoy this one as much.

Off to read the third part!

Just as fun as the first book and full of more surprises.
