But the chance to research the history of the ranch on a business footing is one she just can’t pass up. Carson is waiting, though, and he is determined to show her that he’s long regretted the way he treated her. Can she put her faith in him, or would she be making a terrible mistake?

Lara Chandler loves the Chandler family homestead, but the 100 year lease has reverted to the Blackridge family - she's home to write the history of the Rocking B, the ranch which surrounds the Chandler spread, pack up a few memories, and return to her academic career. And if she can do that while avoiding Carson Blackridge, the Rocking B's owner and onetime crush, she'll be quite happy. For Carson Blackridge, the past holds only bitter memories and the seeds of crushing failure. He wants Lara - but to keep her he'll have to undo years of damage. As family secrets unravel and history comes back to haunt them, will new love survive?Predictable, and Carson really isn't all that likeable to begin with.

Lara Chandler has returned to the childhood home where she grew up. She was the illegitimate child of her mother and the owner of the ranch where her grandfather was the foreman. The home they lived in had been used by Chandlers for over 100 years. Her ancestor had come to this area with the original owners of the ranch and the house was theirs as a gift for 100 years before reverting back to the ranch ownership. The last owner of the ranch was her supposed father, Larry Blackridge, who never acknowledged the blood tie. He has died and the ranch now belongs to his adopted son, Chandler. Lara and Chandler have a history, they grew up together and Lara fell in love with him. She was crushed when he rejected her and now hates him. I spent the first half of the book hating the character of Chandler and trying to decide if I really wanted to finish reading the book. I do love injured or tortured heroes, but Chandler came across to me as very selfish and cruel. It wasn't until almost the end of the book that I "forgave" him his shortcomings and understood what the author was showing us. It was a satisfactory read, but definitely not one that I would read again.

This is another all time favorite. Hero rejects heroine when she is young and she never gets over it. She goes back to her hometown and hero wants her again. This is one of those books that I have in paperback and have bought more than once when my copy disappears. Loved it!
