About this audiobook

From the far reaches of the D'Haran Empire, Bishop Hannis Arc and the ancient Emperor Sulachan lead a vast horde of Shun-Tuk and other depraved "half-people" into the Empire's heart, raising an army of the dead in order to threaten the world of the living. Meanwhile, far from home, Richard Rahl and Kahlan Amnell must defend themselves and their followers from a series of terrifying threats, despite a magical sickness that depletes their strength and which, if not cured, will take their lives...sooner rather than later.

"Richard saw the point of a sword blade sticking out from between the man’s shoulder blades. He spun back toward Richard after throwing the woman out of the opening, ready to attack. It seemed impossible, but the man looked unaffected by the blade that had impaled him through the chest.

It was then, in the weak light from the fire pit off to the side, that Richard got his first good look at the killer.

Three knives were buried up to their brass cross-guards in the man’s chest. Only the handles were showing. Richard saw, too, the broken end of a sword blade jutting out from the center of the man’s chest. The point of that same blade stuck out from the man’s back.

Richard recognized the knife handles. All three were the style carried by the men of the First File.

He looked from those blades that should have killed the big man, up into his face. That was when he realized the true horror of the situation, and the reason for the unbearable stench of death."

From Terry Goodkind, author of the Sword of Truth series, comes a sweeping new novel of Richard Rahl, Kahlan Amnell, and their world.

Why is Zedd suddenly stupid? He is the one that taught kahlen in the first book how the sword worked and now he doesn't know? Even if he forgot knowing kahlen he wouldn't forget how the sword works. It's like it's not even the same author. Zedd is completely different and some of the other characters are hollow, too. This all started when Warren died and it's been getting worse ever since.

What the hell. I went into this book thinking it was the last book to a very long series, but after finishing that ending, I had better be dead wrong; otherwise I might have to throw a legitimate tantrum. The book itself… damn, this is not the Goodkind I have come to expect. I thought it was going downhill with the last two books but I was so hoping this one would be different. It wasn’t. If anything it might have been worse. I can’t believe I’m saying this about The Sword of Truth series, but I don’t know that I even like this book, which is devastating because I absolutely LOVED Goodkind’s first 11 books. One problem: character deaths – these were handled way wrong, too quick and sudden and emotionally over too fast. Second problem: Goodkind’s writing. If may just be me – probably not – but half this book felt like a repeat. Not even of the previous book but of itself. Pages were taken up with dialogue of characters repeating themselves over and over and OVER again. Even with the same exact phrases. They kept thinking the same things over and over. Even the grammar was off, describing a thing the same way with different words, and in the same sentence. Third problem: how the heck did Richard not see the betrayal. Richard is KNOWN for his great intellect and observation. He’s not invincible but the past books have proven that he is smart. He did not act smart in this book. Fourth problem: both Zedd AND Kahlan telling Richard to just give up. I can get one of them doing it, but not both, and not those characters. It just goes on and on, the problems with this book. If there is another book, and there better well be, I will be reading it. But I don’t know if I can take much more disappointment. I don’t know what happened to Terry Goodkind, but this is not the writer I came to love.

As many authors do after they are on their 13th or 14th book in a series, Terry is getting a little wordy when describing ideas. Some whole chapters that could have been left on the cutting floor in my opinion. The book's pace was slow and the distance traveled was a match. The ending was fairly predictable. Hoping for something a little faster paced next time like they used to be.

The further adventures of Richard and Kahlan. In this latest installment, the are still trying to make their way out of the Dark Lands and back to D'Hara. Meanwhile, Bishop Hannis Arc continues to try and take over all of D'Hara. This is pretty standard Goodkind, nothing really new here, but good sword and sorcery action. Along the way, Goodkind seems to adopt the philosophy of G. R. R. Martin and starts killing off characters, some major. This is a big departure for him and I'm not sure it made the book better.

I did not enjoy "The Third Kingdom" at all so when this started off with more of the same I was considering just giving up on the Author but the last three quarters of the book were much better. In Severed Souls the focus is on Ludwig Dreier as the protagonist which I found a lot more interesting. Along with the Mord-Sith there are some new and familiar dangers that are thrown in the path of Richard and Kahlan as they travel in search of a containment field to remove the poison that is killing them and cutting themselves off from their powers. This novel turns out to be a real good edition with some serious surprises and twists. To those who may be feeling like me and thinking of throwing in the towel on this author I would recommend giving this one a try. I think it will remind you of why you used enjoy these characters. Not perfect but very good.

A typical Goodkind work. I find myself enthralled for the first 100-150 pages, waiting to see how Kahlan and Richard and all of their friends will manage to survive another inescapable battle with death. The next 200-300 pages of the book, tend to drag. Goodkind reiterates his message that the battle between good and evil will last indefinitely, but Truth will win out.The last 100 pages or so is when Goodkind really gets creative though. He finally puts Richard and Kahlan into their NEXT battle against evil, and we are almost always left wondering "WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT!?!?" It does get tiresome to see this same pattern again and again with Goodkind (though I admit, some of his books have deviated off the path, but only a little), but at the same time, I keep coming back for more of his work. His characters are irresistible, and I can't get enough of them. So, here I sit, once again, wondering what will happen next.
