About this audiobook

Six poignant short stories reminiscent of life as a transport rider in the Transvaal veld in the days of the gold rush in South Africa at the end of the 19th century. From an early age Fitzpatrick believed that life should be enjoyed to the full and his honest and often moving style of writing leaves one richer for having known him. (Summary by SallyMc)

This is a wonderful collection of stories set in South Africa during the late nineteenth century, I believe. These stories are so evocative of the time and place and the people therein, that I almost had to shake myself to return to the 21st century. These stories tell about great adventure, but are NOT for someone who wants quick adventure. For example, one story is about a group of men who for various reasons join together a while for traveling to their various destinations. One man is seriously hurt due to an ill-timed prank. The story then records the man’s slow and painful death, and his nobility during his dying, as well as feelings of the now-broken man who instigated the silly prank. I have reread this story every year since the first time I read it. It still haunts me. I am sorry that my poor little review does not do this collection of stories justice. Try one story and I think you will fall in love with this collection. Please post your comments if you read this book!
