About this audiobook

Predictability has come a long way. The computers of the future can tell you if you’re going to win a war before you fire a shot. Unfortunately they’re predicting perpetual standoff between the Terran and Centaurian Empires. What they need is something unpredictable, what they get is Thomas Cole, a man from the past accidently dragged forward in time. Will he fit their calculations, or is he the random variable that can break the stalemate? – The Variable Man first appeared in the September, 1953 issue of Space Science Fiction magazine. Author

Philip K. Dick

Over a writing career that spanned three decades, PHILIP K. DICK (1928–1982) published 36 science fiction novels and 121 short stories in which he explored the essence of what makes man human and the dangers of centralized power. Toward the end of his life, his work turned to deeply personal, metaphysical questions concerning the nature of God. Eleven novels and short stories have been adapted to film, notably Blade Runner (based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?), Total Recall, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly, as well as television's The Man in the High Castle. The recipient of critical acclaim and numerous awards throughout his career, including the Hugo and John W. Campbell awards, Dick was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2005, and between 2007 and 2009, the Library of America published a selection of his novels in three volumes. His work has been translated into more than twenty-five languages.

A good listen to one of Dick’s mediocre stories. It’s a public domain recording, and the narration is simply awful, but the story is very entertaining, nonetheless.

Could not listen, narrator's voice was stilted and as one reviewer said, sounded like a spoof of Captain Kirk. I found it too annoying to listen past 5 minutes.

I love PKD but could not get past the weird reading. Its. Almost as. If. There were. Added. Periods. For. No reason.

Interesting story. The narrator had a nice voice but weirdly monotone and dramatic at the same time. Like William Shatner.
