I have to give this book a great review because I edited it, and it contains translations by one of the finest Spanish to English translators ever: Helen Lane. Ricardo Palma was a great nineteenth-century Peruvian humorist and author of historical miscellany. This book contains a collection of his playful tales --culled from oral tradition in Lima, as well as historical accounts-- about life in Peru from the 1500s to the 1800's. Some of the pieces are marked by humor, other are drier but chock full of historical detail.
