- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Classified as fiction, as the story is "mostly true," this book tells an engaging story about Ben Franklin's invention of "swim fins." The best part of the book is the author's note that includes Ben Franklin's description of his first invention as he wrote it up in a letter. Explore how Rosenstock took the primary document and turned it into fiction with imagined dialogue.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5We are so use to reading and hearing about Ben Franklin as an adult but this book takes us back to when he was a young boy. He became an inventor at a young age but he didn't even know it! He was considered a strange boy by the towns people but that did not stop him from being curious and wanting to succeeded. This book can be used when teaching about the US Presidents.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Ben Franklin's first invention is inspired by fish.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved this book! From the first page on this book would have a student completely hooked. Even the words on the page are an artwork. The words change color, size, font, and are strategically placed on a page that make every word interesting and intriguing. Aside for the look of the book the biography of young Ben Franklin is great. Most biographies start as a child and continue on or just focus on that persons success, but this book gives a sneak peak at the beginnings of one of the greatest inventors in history. It helps a child feel connected on their own level to an "old guy who was an inventor" to imagine him as their peer. It also encourages children to aspire after what interests them and what they like to do.This book could be turned into any lesson in the classroom. A history lesson could be done with the time line in the back of the book on Ben Franklin's life. A study in science could be done on his greatest invention, the lightning rod, and others such as bifocals and instruments.
