About this audiobook

Fans of Mary Poppins will love this whimsical tale of a boarding school for children of very busy parents, where an extraordinary headmistress teaches them life lessons about courage, adventure, friendship . . . and the importance of birthday cake.

Nestled inside a lighthouse, Great Rapscott School for the Daughters of Busy Parents takes its motto from Amelia Earhart: Adventure is worthwhile in itself. Headmistress Ms. Rapscott couldn't agree more, but her students, who are shipped to the school in boxes, could use a little convincing. Still, despite their initial reluctance, the students are soon soaring through the sky and getting lost on purpose. In addition to learning what birthday cakes are and how best to approach a bumbershoot tree, the students also manage to learn a little something about strength and bravery.

Bestselling author Elise Primavera has created an irresistible story about finding your way.

The book definitely has potential and it will be interesting to see if the author continues with the story in a series. The main character, Ms. Rapscott's is a wonderful character as are the girls but there could have been more development and growth of the characters which perhaps will come later if more books are written. It will also be interesting to see if the horrible parents of the children end up coming in to the story more.

Narrated by Katherine Kellgren. Ms. Rapscott is the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle of self-reliance. She runs a school for daughters of the busiest parents in the world who are too busy to teach them how to use a map, write thank you letters, and give hugs. Four new students are delivered to her doorstep but a fifth has gone missing. Ms. Rapscott teaches the four girls valuable skills before they go "not looking" for the fifth. Kellgren performs with full gusto; some listeners may be put off by Ms. Rapscott's shrill trill and Bea's screech. But it's full-on entertainment that bounces from here to there, just like Ms. Rapscott's daffy curriculum.

I think the story and characters may have actually deserved four stars, but there were some glaring grammatical errors that took me out of the story (some made me a little angry, to be honest) and cost the book a star.

Five daughters of extremely busy parents are sent to a most unusual boarding school, but one gets lost along the way.Eh, it was okay. It's written in a style reminiscent of Lemony Snicket -- is there a word for that style? It's common enough among children's books that there ought to be. Kind of whimsical, bordering on absurd? Anyhow, there were adventures and lessons, but nothing in the story felt particularly fresh to me. Young readers who are not as jaded as I might enjoy it more. I listened to the audiobook, but even Katherine Kellgren couldn't manage to save this one from mediocrity for me.

Quirky, entertaining, and nicely no-nonsense. I wonder if it will strike a little too close to home for many of the kids whose parents are too busy for them, but I like the unusual premise, and the emphasis on self-reliance.
