- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Simple, well rhymed, endearing plot with a great ending. Nice details in the clear pictures. Great for storytime or one-on-one sharing.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Stanley has big plans and he's keeping his family up at night while he works on them. I like this book for a lot of reasons, the most important being the story is creative and funny. I also like that the story rhymes and the reader is asked to guess what the closing rhyme will be before turning the page. Finally I love the illustrations by the author. His characters' personalities and feelings of tiredness, disbelief, shock, and so on come to life in this picture book. Even the cat is bewildered by Stanley's plans. This book would be great for teaching pronunciation and rhyming. It would also just be enjoyable to read during story time. For recognizing literary devices, I think this book would be great for talking about climax (Kaboum!!) and characterization. It would be neat for students to look at each character and maybe develop his/her/its own point of view on what Stanley is doing. That would be really cool to share!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Stanley is quite the industrious pooch.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The Wimbeldon family find that sleep is a precious commodity indeed in this humorous picture-book, as their dog Stanley continually wakes them from their slumber one night. From howling at the moon - "I don't recognize the tune" says Walter the father - to fixing the drain, Stanley seems to be getting up to quite a bit. By the time the Wimbledons realize that their rest has been interrupted too many times for them to get back to sleep, Stanley, whose actions are anything but random, has launched them on an extraordinary journey. But why does he want to go to the moon...?A sweet little fantasy, one featuring an amusing story told in rhyme and droll artwork that captures both the Wimbledons' bewilderment and Stanley's determination, It's Only Stanley would make an excellent read-aloud selection at bedtime. I particularly liked Max the cat's involvement, detailed mostly in the illustrations, as he finds himself drenched during Stanley's "drain cleaning," and his tail singed from Stanley's "TV repair." The conclusion of the story, in which Stanley finally reaches his objective, is as satisfying as it is amusing. Recommended to young children who enjoy stories with a bit of surreal humor in them.
