John Flanagan

Trish Purnell-Webb is an Australian clinical psychologist who became the first certified Gottman therapist in Australia in 2013. She then continued her training to become the first master trainer and consultant for the Gottman Institute in Australia in 2015. She has been in private practise as a psychologist since 1997 after a twenty-year career in organisational training and development in both government and corporate organisations while also raising three children with the help of her husband, Mark. Trish has always been fascinated by the impact relationships have on our sense of well-being and satisfaction, whether they are work relationships or intimate relationships. In her work providing executive coaching to senior members of organisations throughout Australia, she came to understand that intimate relationships had a profound effect on an individual’s ability to perform in life. This led her to explore the question “How can we help people have more successful relationships?” It also led her to the research work of John and Julie Gottman, and her fate was sealed. Since 2009, Trish has focussed on working with couples both in her private practise in Burleigh Heads, Queensland, Australia, and on training therapists throughout Australia, New Zealand, and Asia to become more effective in successfully working with couples. Along with her business partner, John, Trish also runs couple workshops across Australia and New Zealand using the evidenced-based Art and Science of Love Couples Workshop developed by John and Julie Gottman. Trish conceived of this book as a resource for couples to use as a relapse prevention tool after they complete either a workshop or couples therapy with Gottman-trained therapists. Trish still lives on the Gold Coast with her husband of forty-one years and is the proud grandmother of five beautiful grandchildren to whom she devotes much of her time. John Flanagan is a mental health accredited social worker in private practise, completing his bachelor’s of social work in 1988 and later a master’s in gestalt therapy. He was the first social worker to become a certified Gottman therapist in Australia in 2015, and he became the second master trainer and consultant in 2019. John has had an extensive history in direct service delivery with couples, families, and young people, as well as in organisational development and training. He has developed a practise that utilises a range of experiential therapies combining these approaches in his work style. John has also completed his Certificate IV in workplace training and assessment and has delivered a broad range of training, both accredited and non-accredited. John knows the incredible value in attending to relationships, as well as the importance of how they are formed, maintained and developed. In over thirty years of working within complex environments and relationships, he has developed a strong speciality in understanding and guiding complex interactions and relationships. He has provided training to many individuals and human service organisations in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and the United States about creating positive work cultures, managing challenging clients, resilience, and communication. Over the last twenty years, John has provided a range of psycho-educational group programs to Australian veterans and their families in areas such as trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and resilience.

A continuation of "The Kings of Clonmel," "Halt's Peril" jumps right back into the middle of the action, with the main characters hunting down the wily enemies that repeatedly invade their grasp. The main character Will is pushed to his limits as he fights these formidable enemies and battles to save his mentor's life in the process. In short, thanks to Flanagan's suspense-filled scenes, heart-racing action, lovable characters, and unexpected twists, this book captures readers' attention from the first page and firmly grasps it until they turn the last page.

This is the ninth book in the Ranger’s Apprentice series. The tenth book is the Emperor of Nihon-Ja. There is also one additional book titled The Lost Stories which released late in 2011. This book does a good job of wrapping up the story that started in, The Kings of Clonmel. Like previous books it is a solid middle grade fantasy, but nothing incredibly creative or outstanding.Halt, Will, and Horace are on the trail of Tennyson and the rest of the Outsider cult. When one of the Genovesan assassins gets a good shot in at Halt things turn dire. Can Will get help on time? Or will this be the end of Halt’s adventures? As stated by the title, Halt is in dire peril.I don’t have a ton to say about this book. It you like the series you should read this book. This is basically the second half of the story that was started in Kings of Clonmel. It is a bit darker than previous books and had some slow spots. But like previous books there is some great banter and humor throughout and the fight scenes are exceptionally well done. These books are pretty formulaic; there’s a problem, Halt and crew try to fix it, something horrible happens, Will saves the day, they fix the problem and life goes on. The books are well written and fun to read, but there isn’t anything all that interesting or creative here.I missed that none of the female characters featured, but enjoyed that Malcom was back in the story some. Halt seemed a bit tired throughout, like he was feeling his age. Will didn’t really show much growth as a character either.Overall this was a good addition to the series. I felt like this book was a bit darker and moved a bit slower than previous books. It was good to complete the story started in Kings of Clonmel and I enjoyed the witty banter between the characters. The book is well written, pretty typical fantasy fare...nothing all that creative but solid. Recommended for fans of middle grade fantasy.

Always fun to ride along with Will, Halt and Horace. "Halt's Peril" (book 9) is the continuation of the storyline from "Kings of Clonmel" (Book 8) as the three representatives of Araluen chase down a scam artist of a preacher who thrives on violence and fear as motivational tools for joining his false religion. Like all thieves, his objective is greed and he hasn't got prayer of defeating the kingdom's two most beloved and heroic Rangers. Another solid installment of a terrific series. If you haven't started the series yet, start from Book 1: the Ruins of Gorlan. If, like me, you've read them all, then you don't need my recommendation, you're already hooked.

Even after nine books I still find myself enjoying the three main characters of this series. That being said, I was a little bored by this book. The writing is fine, the characters are fine, the dialog is as good as ever. The problem for me was the pacing. There is a stretch in the middle that is very slow, with lots of fretting, descriptions, and recounting of the past. In other words, it got boring. Which is too bad. There was an energy in the earlier books that was very exciting, bit which has ebbed of late. Part of the problem is that we are so familiar with the characters that while they are together, there is no discovery going on. They know who they are, we know who they are, and while they are still enjoyable to spend time with, there is nothing new in their relationships. Also, the Ranger's Apprentice isn't an apprentice any more, and is by all accounts extremely competent, so that tension is gone, too.So after nine books we find ourselves with some old friends with whom we are very comfortable, in a story that slows down in the middle to the point of boredom. Even so, I'll still come back for the next book, because Will, Halt, and Horace are compelling enough that I want to see what happens to them next.

What can I say about the Ranger's Apprentice series. It is great fun and although it's completely written according to a formula, I enjoy all the novels very much.

Halt, Will and Horace are trailing Tennyson and his group of outlaw thieves masquerading as a religious cult known as the Outsiders. Although they chased them out of Clonmel, they didn't capture the group, and now the Outsiders are headed through Picta, aiming for Araluen. Tennyson has a pair of paid Genovesan assassins hanging back behind the main group, waiting to ambush the Rangers and Horace in a forest of dead trees. In the battle, Halt is nicked by a poisoned crossbow bolt before Will kills one assassin, and the pursuit is abandoned in order to care for Halt. Will realizes the his best bet is to ride out for Macindaw and bring back Malcolm, the best and most advanced healer he knows. While he is gone, the remaining assassin is stalking Horace and a near-comatose Halt. Will and Horace have to prove to themselves that they can handle things without Halt's advice... they don't have any other choice. Lots of battle action and strategy, outlaws, pirates, Scotti raiders and mercenaries! Best to read the others before this one, for strong 6th grade readers and up.

I'll never grow tired of this series. Can't wait for book ten. Halt gets hit by a poisoned arrow, and the assassin who shot it isn't telling which poison he used. Had me biting my nails and hoping Halt would make it.

In this 9th episode of the Ranger's Apprentice series, Will, Halt and Horace chase Tennyson back to Araluen to bring him to justice for killing King Ferris. They have to deal with the Genovesan assassins while tracking down Tennyson and his gang of disciples. Halt is poisoned by a crossbow bolt and it is only Will's courage and quick thinking that saves him. I like the teasing and comraderie that goes on between the characters. I like the adventure. I like that the characters are well-rounded with weaknesses as well as strengths. I think this is a great series for Middle Grade readers.
