- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book takes place right after the civil war when the slaves on plantations on "freed." Emily "loves" one of the freedmen, but honestly the author hardly goes into her feelings and there is barely any contact between the two so I can't see it as much other than a little crush. The story was really good, but I didn't feel like I got to know any of the characters besides Emily. It's a pretty good book though and I liked it.
