About this audiobook
On June 13, 1966, men of the 1st Recon Battalion, 1st Marine Division were stationed on Hill 488. Before the week was over, they would fight the battle that would make them the most highly decorated small unit in the entire history of the U.S. military, winning a Congressional Medal of Honor, four Navy Crosses, thirteen Silver Stars, and eighteen Purple Hearts-some of them posthumously.
During the early evening of June 15, a battalion of hardened North Vietnamese regulars and Viet Cong-outnumbering the Americans 25 to 1-threw everything they had at the sixteen Marines and two Navy corpsmen for the rest of that terror-filled night. Every man who held the hill was either killed or wounded defending the ground with unbelievable courage and unflagging determination-even as reinforcements were on the way.
All they had to do was make it until dawn . . .

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a battle I’ve never heard of until now. The story seemed to slowly reach hill 488, but I could feel tension swelling inside me as Staff Sergeant Howard accepted another night at their position. Once the first shots were fired by the enemy, I was riveted to the battle. I felt as if I knew each member personally, and felt despair for each platoon casualty. Once the relief force arrived at daybreak, I cheered until three of them were shot dead for not hugging the ground as instructed. When even the 20 mm cannon fire could not route the sniper, I began to wonder who else would die. In the end, determined Marines got the sniper. If you enjoy Viet Nam battle history, this story will place you at the fight and carry you away in sad victory.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5One of the best narratives about the Vietnam War. If you never heard about Hill 488 (Howard’s Hill) prepare for revelation. You will learn much courage and fidelity.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Thank you so much for serving our country I wish I can be by your side God bless the United states
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Some slow and dragging parts, but overall served as a great time filler. Enjoyed reading, entertaining.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A passionate account of a tough but pointless small-unit action during the Vietnam War. Overstaying their reconnaissance mission, 18 Marines and Navy Corpsmen defend a strategically worthless hilltop against a VD batallion for a night with gruelling casualties for both sides. Aptly told by a survivor of the action, it captures the flavour of soldier life.
