Jennifer Ashley's Highland Pleasures series is a favorite of mine, but none of the books have been quite as good as the first in the series. This latest addition, which is fifth in the series was pretty good, the story of Elliot McBride who has returned to Scotland after surviving a horrendous ordeal in India. He is scarred inside and out and the only one that can soothe him is Juliana, his childhood sweetheart. Juliana who is jilted at the last minute on her wedding day is reunited with Elliot and he marries her then and there on the spot. How fortuitous he happened to be there! And so begins their whirlwind first few weeks as a married couple as he sweeps her off her feet and takes her to his crumbling castle in the Highlands. No sooner do they arrive with his Indian servants in tow, that she realizes he's "a little" mad. His captivity has taken it's toll on him mentally and he has a tendency to start strangling people. And so is the now familiar plotline in this Highlander series in which these big and burly Highlanders have a heavy burden to carry from a tortured past. They are all a little crazy because of it, but the love of a good woman calms them down and makes them somewhat normal again. I loved this scenario at first in The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie, but now I'm finding it a bit formulaic. Don't get me wrong, the writing and sensuality is top notch, but there just wasn't anything that really grabbed me with this one. There's no sexual tension between Elliot and Juliana, they wind up together from the very beginning and sex is incredible for them every. single. time. Which is several times a day. Just about the only thing good Elliot has going for himself is the fact he's having sex so much! But there's this pesky problem he's dealing with - he's accused of killing a former friend of his in India, although there was never really any doubt that he's wrongly accused and it looks like his former friend is trying to kill Elliot. But, Elliot, ever the macho Highlander goes out after him in the dead of night, determined to be the hunter rather than the huntee. During all of this, Juliana has a lot to deal with on her plate, but her lists and organizational skills help enormously, which is sort of a running joke throughout the book. All in all, not my favorite of the Mackenzie novels, but I still liked it. Overall, it needed more suspense and sexual tension to keep it afloat and interesting, luscious cover though.

THE SEDUCTION OF ELLIOT MCBRIDE contains charming characters and one semi-unbelievable plot stretch after another. Individually, none of these events were enough to throw the narrative off, but in hindsight, a ridiculous story runs behind these characters. I enjoyed the hero and heroine thoroughly, though much of Elliot McBride's charm is how much he reminds me of Ian.

On the brightside, THE SEDUCTION makes me want to revisit earlier Highland Pleasures books, as well as Meredith Duran's Indian romance.

Juliana has been engaged for quite some time, even though its not to the man she truly desires. Then on her wedding day, her fiancee jilts her for his piano teacher without even informing her of his plans, with over two hundred people waiting for them in the chapel. So when she seeks a few peaceful moments, she ends up finding Elliot Mcbride, who has recently returned. She surprises even herself, when she proposes to him, and then he actually says "yes". She knows it won't be a easy union, with Elliot having been a prisoner for quite some time. But she has always loved him, and wants to be his wife more than anything. Elliot, is thrilled with Juliana proposes to him, he has always wanted her, but lately has never felt worthy of her. Elliot has demons and nightmares, and feels like he is almost half mad. But he also knows that he could never let her go when she falls right into his lap. What is a Scot to do? As they start their life together, the road is dangerous and full of twists and turns, but a burning passion builds between Elliot and Juliana. One that turns from a fierce desire to a explosive love that could very well save them both. The Seduction of Elliot McBride is the fifth installment in the series. I just fell in love with the previous books...however this one fell a bit short. Don't get me wrong though, it was a fun and easy read, the kind you can relax into, but it didn't fully grasp me, and had me at every page like the previous books in the series had. I really enjoyed the plot and the characters. Elliot, has suffered much in the past, including being a prisoner and still barely sane. He is a very passionate man though, he can't stop making love to his wife. And some of the bed scenes were very playful and fun and I know this is bad...but I almost laughed, they could be quite humorous. Juliana, is very supportive of Elliot, and fully accepts his illegitimate daughter into her home. She doesn't believe Elliot is mad, just trying to heal. The side characters were also fun to see with their little quirks of personalities that just added a flair to the story. I also got to see a bit more of the Mackenzie family, which is always a delight. I enjoyed how vivid the characters emotions were portrayed throughout the story. It almost felt like they were real, and I could feel what they were feeling...it was so intense at times. Of course there is still Ashley's sharp wit and brilliant writing talent, that is ever present...so no worries on that front. The flow for the most part was pretty smooth like touching glass. Overall a very romantic and poignant love story that will just enchant you and sweep you away into a world of seduction, danger, intrigue, and a intense love story. A winner!

The Seduction of Elliot McBride4.5 StarsThe first book in the Highland Pleasures series not to focus on one of the Mackenzies and it is a unmitigated success. The romance is simply wonderful as a sexy and sweet retelling of the classic Beauty and the Beast story. Scarred both physically and emotionally, Elliot is perceived by others as losing his grip on reality following his capture and enslavement by an ferocious tribe in India. Juliana, however, sees beneath the surface to the charming boy she remembers from childhood, and knows that he is still in there just waiting to emerge with love, loyalty and understanding. The secondary characters are another excellent aspect of the story. Elliot's devoted Sikh servants and his eccentric uncle McGregor add just the right about of humor to a story with darker undertones. My one small caveat is that Elliot's experiences in India are told in a matter of fact tone, which detracts from the emotional impact of his PTSD and as a result the story is not as touching as some of the other books in the series, i.e. Ian's and Cameron's. In sum, a enjoyable addition to a fantastic series and I cannot wait for Daniel's book.
