Synopsis: Sara and young Patrick are living outside of DC and Kerney misses them both. While they are apart, he has decided to buy some horses for the ranch. While doing this rather pleasant task, he discovers the man in the next room has died. This death leads him on the trail of a dead enlisted man, drug trafficking, and, of course, murder.Review: This is one of McGarrity's better offerings. The continued evolution of the characters is lending depth to the stories.

The latest in McGarrity's Kevin Kearny series broadens locales to include California and Virgina as well as New Mexico. The story is satisfying in many respects -- it speaks to the challenges of long-distance marriage and parenthood, of multi-state law enforcement cooperation, and of tying up the loose ends in a case. To its credit, there are some ends left loose. On the downside, the motive for the primary crime is a bit thin, and in the secondary story line obstacles are rather glibly overcome through Kearny's relationship to highly placed people.
