About this audiobook

Blending tightly plotted mysteries with healthy doses of zesty fun, Chloe Green's acclaimed Dallas O'Connor series is a hit with both critics and readers. When Dallas is whisked to the Caribbean to whip up a style for a new all-girl band, the local priestess scoffs that Dallas wears "de face of death." But the scenery is too lush and the drinks are too many for Dallas to care. That is, until a dead body spoils the sand on the pristine beach.

Fashion Victim focuses on two things I have absolutely no interest in: fashion and contemporary music. Fashion Victim has one more strike against it in my book: although there’s a body on page one, the next hint of a crime happens almost half-way through the book. And we don’t get back to the page-one body until near the end of the story. It’s almost as if the bodies were there so Fashion Victim could be categorized as a mystery. As I was reading the first 100 pages or so, I thought Fashion Victim was a book on careers in “styling.” That’s what the 30-ish heroine, Dallas O’Connor, does for a living. She dresses and accessorizes people who appear in music videos. In Fashion Victim, Dallas has a dream job styling the musicians of “Fate of Paradise,” a five-woman band, for their first video. She is being paid an incredible amount of money, given an unlimited budget … and the video is being produced on a tropical island, with accommodations in a palatial hotel. The only designer I’m familiar with is L.L. Bean, so the constant references to others was lost on me, as were the wall-to-wall descriptions of what clothing every person was wearing at every moment … plus hairdos, plus shoes and accessories, plus make-up. I found it incredibly tedious. I can, however, see that other readers might find those characteristics enjoyable. The writing was smooth, the plot as realistic as any other light mystery featuring an amateur sleuth. Dallas O’ Connor is also an appealing protagonist. I personally won’t go out of my way to read another in the series, but for others readers, Fashion Victim could be a “must read.” First published in Mystery News, Feb-March 2003 edition.
