About this audiobook

Sarah Bird authors brilliant, introspective novels of bittersweet reminiscence tempered with humor. The Yokota Officers Club is a tale both courageous and touching--a journey of the heart that speaks volumes of the transient, isolated lifestyle of military families. Having grown up at the Yokota Air Base in Japan, and having moved six times in the last eight years, Bernadette "Bernie" Root and her five siblings are quintessential military brats. It’s 1968, and eighteen-year-old Bernie is returning to the regimented life at Kadena Air Base on Okinawa after her first year away at college. Although her attitudes toward the military have changed, Bernie is beginning to realize the intense bonds she shares with her unusual family.

The story told here, holds true! (An Army Brat)An officers son, I could easily place myself in many of the situations here. With comments, phrases, events, I’m sure many a “Brat” have lived, questioned WHY!?, and was forced to toe the line. It’s been a life time ago… yet in an instant I was back to being a little boy on the bases/forts… finding treasure and troubles.

This book may stir old memories, and make you thankful for the experience you through not knowing why!

Thank you for the trip down memory lane!

July 2009 COTC Book Club selection.

Highly enjoyable, but very sad in parts. As it's a coming-of-age story, this would also likely appeal to older high school students.
