About this audiobook

When seventeen-year-old Katy Swartz moved to West Virginia right before her senior year, she'd pretty much resigned herself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring, but then she spotted her hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up . . . until he opened his mouth. Daemon Black is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. It's hate at first sight, but when a stranger attacks her and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something . . . unexpected happens. The hot guy next door? Well, he's an alien. Turns out that Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities and Katy is caught in the crosshairs. Daemon's touch has lit her up like the Vegas Strip and the only way she's getting out of this alive is by sticking close to him until her alien mojo fades. That is, if she doesn't kill him first.

Maybe it is the fact that I haven't ever read a novel featuring aliens, but I actually enjoyed this. I like Katy and Dee, their personalities complement each other and Dee helps pull Katy out of her shell. Daemon really bothered me throughout the beginning of the story, and just like me, Katy isn't forgiving him for his bad behavior. I'm devouring Onyx now and plan to keep diving into the series. It is intense, dark, funny, and so full of teen angst. Quite a great, yet quick, read!

Holy alien babies, this was awesome and so totally hot. Could it get any steamier in here? Phew! ;)

With this in mind, this was different to say the least, and laugh worthy. Thanks to all that demanded I read this, I didn't know what I was missing out on!

I wasn’t sure what I to expect going into this book as I don’t normally read about aliens. This was my first alien novel that I’ve read. I grew up loving Roswell so I wanted to give it a chance and boy was that that the best decision! I immediately loved this book and fell in love with the characters. The love story between Katy and Daemon was amazing. I loved how they started off with hating each other and had a close bond by the end. Although they never really truly hated each other. I felt for Katy wanting to be close and until she knew their secret would never truly be. I also felt for the Luxen and how they share so much love to protect each other. I have to say Dee was my favorite character with her bubbly personality and positive attitude with all the events unfolding. I wouldn’t change a thing about this book. It was everything I wanted it to be and more.

This had the potential to be original. But change "alien" to "vampire/werewolf/fallen angel/faerie/etc." and you've probably read the same story elsewhere. Even the UST between Daemon and Kat can't salvage the book.

But I'm glad the cover of the second printing is less amateur-looking than the original cover.

Good story. I don't normally read alien based books, but love mythology and paranormal. This book was recommended based on my reading like from "Goodreads" and I'm glad it was. It is high school based, but probably better suited for young adult, if you are weary of sensual activity. There wasn't any sex but some 3rd base kinda stuff. It kept me guessing and can't wait for the next one. The main characters get under each others skin and I can see why. They both have their problems but I think something deeper is going on.

Well I thought I would give this book a try because it’s from Jennifer L. Armentrout and because it had aliens in it. I had a hard time reading this book because the male protagonist, Daemon, is the biggest jerk ever! Honestly I get that the main female protagonist is taken in by his smashing good looks and that she really has no experience in life so a hot guy would be alluring but he written as the biggest jerk ever. What I liked:The alien aspect: They are beings of light and how they were written was interesting.Katy: Leading lady and she is funny, does not roll over and take Daemon’s crap and does what she thinks is right. You go girl!Dee: Daemon’s twin sister. She might be an alien but I really like her spunk. I like that she wants to have a life and make her own choices and that she is true to Katy. What I did not like:This book follows a typical formula. Bookish girl meets hot guy, drools over him but she does “want” him, liar, but she just cannot seem to keep her eyes, or hands off of him, and he is broody and full on angst. Somehow he is truly drawn to her because she is somehow hot and she never knew but that doesn’t mean he can be sweet or respectful in public but in the end he just can’t help himself, he has to protect her….because you know that somehow she is in danger. Mega eye-rolls on this.Overall, I enjoyed the story with the beings of light. That was a different twist with them and the Arums. For those reasons I gave this story a three star rating. Daemon alone took away two stars. Sorry, men who are verbally abusive are never, ever, ever, ok in my book, even fictional ones.

booknook — Young Adult book reviewsUgh. I feel like the only person in the world who doesn't love Obsidian. I didn't hate it, but I wasn't wowed by it either, and I certainly didn't like the romance.Okay, so Daemon is hot. But honestly, that's about it. He is a complete and utter douchebag. Right away we see that he's a douche, but I dealt with it, and I even laughed a bit, because I honestly thought he'd come out of his shell and turn into this nice amazing guy... so wrong. He continued to be a douchebag, with fleeting moments of sweetness in between. Even Katy realized this and bitched at him for playing hot and cold with her. It was so infuriating. One minute he's being an arrogant self-absorbed dickhead, and the next he's saying something sweet.. and then he's back to being a douche. Okay, so he was fiercely loyal and protective of his family and I guess that's admirable, but he still acted like a dick when it was completely unnecessary and uncalled for. I don't care how hot the guy is, he's still a dick.I think I was hoping that Obsidian would have this great knee-weakening romance, but what I got was two people who hate each others' guts but happen to be sexually attracted to each other. That makes for some steamy, charged moments, but a crappy relationship.Moving on. Dee was totally an awesome character and I adored her! She's one of those sweet, adorable, totally huggable best friends. I think I'm obsessed with these kinds of characters. She's just a cute, bubbly, sweetheart who you can't say "no" to. And then there's Lesa. Lesa was totally my favourite character! She didn't have a huge part, but there were small bits now and then that had me cracking up! "Oh my god, you have to tell me everything! Did you guys kiss? Wait. Did you have sex?" "Lesa, seriously, chill.""Whatever. You have to tell me. I will hate you forever if you did but don't tell me. What does he smell like?""Smell like?" I scrunched up my face.Obsidian, Page 240 "I don't think he meant to kiss me," I say finally. "What? Did he slip and fall on your mouth? Those things are known to happen."Obsidian, Page 241 "I don't know. I mean we haven't talked about it. He literally left afterward, and all he's done since then is poke me with his pen." "Probably because he wants to poke you with something else," she said dryly."Obsidian, Page 241So, the bottom line: I hated the romance, the alien stuff was kind of cool, the side characters were great, but this book didn't rock my world. I read it through quickly enough but it just didn't draw me in. I wasn't hooked. I didn't scream with delight or squeal or cry or any of that awesomeness. And there was a time sort of in the middle when I was getting a little bored. It was in between major plot moments and I was like, "Okay, ready for something new to happen." The beginning was also a little frustrating because it was before we found out about the alien stuff and everyone seemed to be alluding to this big mystery. It reminded me a lot of when people say stuff like, "So I know this super awesome secret... but I can't tell you." There is nothing more annoying than that!I didn't hate Obsidian but I clearly didn't love it. I'm kind of disappointed because I literally see everyone and their mother obsessing over Obsidian and I kind of wish I could be one of those people. I wanted to be super excited about this book but it just wasn't thrilling me.

Review to come. All I could think of throughout the book was of Twilight. Better written and with Aliens, but all the same. So that kind of detracted from the book for me.

Oh, my goodness, what a story! I found myself purchasing a few YA paranormal novels that dealt with aliens late last year and this turned out to be one of my favorites. The book description above totally intrigued me, especially the fact that our hero, Daemon, appears to be an incredible jerk. And it turns out, he is!

First off, let me say the biggest strength of this book is the characters. We are introduced to Katy shortly after she and her mom have moved from Florida to The Middle-of-Nowhere, West Virginia. Katy has her own book review blog (go, Katy!) and is interested in books, graphic novels and gardening. She lost her father to cancer three years ago, and the move is a chance for her and her mom to start fresh. Her mom advises her that the next door neighbors include teenagers her age. Excited to possibly make some new friends, Katy heads over to meet them and get directions to a grocery store and nursery. The door is answered by Daemon who is absolutely gorgeous, and an absolute jerk. After trading insults and obtaining directions, Katy heads to town and runs into Daemon’s twin sister, Dee, the polar opposite of her brother – sweet, friendly, and eager to make friends.

Much to Daemon’s dismay, Dee and Katy become fast friends and Dee is determined that Katy and Daemon get along, too. They both try to avoid each other as much as possible, but various circumstances throw them together and, when things turn dangerous, Daemon ends up saving Katy’s life twice – and marking her with his energy. Reluctantly, Daemon informs Katy that they now have to stay close so he can protect her from his enemies, an alien race called the Arum, who are determined to draw all the energy they can from Daemon and everyone like him. And so, Katy learns that her next door neighbors are actually aliens called Luxen, beings of light who migrated to Earth when their planet was destroyed by the Arum. Daemon will do anything to protect his sister and fellow Luxen, and that includes spending time with Katy.

I’m going to stop with the description there so as to avoid spoilers, but the plot isn’t the main reason I liked this book so much. The joy for me was the interactions between Daemon and Katy. These two completely rub each other the wrong way, but are also very attracted to each other – and neither of them is happy about it. Daemon has his reasons for being a jerk, but you can’t help but like him anyway. I don’t know how Armentrout did it, but she managed to make him into one of my favorite romantic heroes. It is a very delicate balance to make a jerk likable, but he is balanced out beautifully by Katy who is determined not to take any of his crap – no matter how much some of it hurts. His edges are also softened by his love for his sister, Dee, and we come to learn that one of the reasons he is so hostile to Katy is that he and Dee were once a group of triplets and had another brother named Dawson. Dawson was apparently killed, along with his human girlfriend Bethany, before this book started (a prequel novel about their romance was recently released), and Daemon believes Dawson’s love for a human made him vulnerable. He is determined to avoid Dawson’s fate.

Obsidian uses the first person narrative from Katy’s point of view, so we see how she reacts to Daemon and how strong she is. She is completely able to rise to any challenge he throws at her, and becomes friends with Dee despite his hostility. I totally related to Katy and wish I had a fraction of her gumption. She is loyal, honorable, has a sense of humor, and is willing to put up a fight when she has to. She stands toe-to-toe with Daemon and gives as good as she gets. They perfectly complement each other. Her friendship with Dee is the complete opposite; Dee is sweet, strong, loving, and in need of a good friend. She loves her brother, but goes against his wishes and becomes friends with Katy. She is the common ground between Katy and Daemon – they will both do whatever they can to protect Dee, who comes across as fragile even though she has her own strengths.

So we have an interesting plot, strong characters, humor, danger, romance and action. The one weakness of this book, and the reason it lost a star, is the editing. There are some missing words, grammatical errors (especially in regards to changing verb tenses), and misspellings. It is not enough to throw you completely out of the story, but it’s noticeable; hopefully, a better copy editor is brought in for book two which will be released in August.

Obsidian has been a very enjoyable read for me, and I know I’ll be re-reading it a time or two before the next book, Onyx, is released so I can get my fix of bickering duo, Daemon and Katy. If you like your romantic heroes gorgeous, sarcastic and hostile, and your heroines cute, sarcastic and stubborn, then this is a series you’ll definitely want to check out.

Who knew being a jerk could be so likable. Daemon and Katy's relationship can be cold one minute and fiery hot the next. Daemon is an alien and Katy is his spunky new neighbor. Daemon enjoys ruffling Katy's ire, which Katy on some level seems to take pleasure in. Daemon and Katy were two of the best characters (put together)I've came across in a while, Daemon can be irritating but I didn't hate him once; Katy is no shrinking violet, she holds her own against Daemon's ever changing moods.

This was my first alien themed paranormal romance read, and it was a pleasurable one. If I every read another alien themed PNR. I hope it's as good as this one. The author's writing style was superb, the writing was witty, and appropriate.

Hope the next book is even better.

Series Info/Source: This is the first book in the Lux series (there are six books in the Lux series). I borrowed this from the library.Story (3/5): The story is about Kat who recently moved to West Virginia with her mother after the death of her father. Kat struggles to make friends and would rather work on her book blog, however the neighbors next door are twins her age and she is trying to make a new start. While Dee is outgoing and bubbly, Daemon is another story. As Kat spends more and more time with Dee she notices that things about her neighbors aren’t quite right..not to mention the wide berth the rest of the town gives them. This is an okay story, pretty typical YA paranormal read but with aliens. The pace was kind of slow and it takes Kat almost half the book to figure out what we already know from the start...her neighbors are aliens!!! The rest of the book is mostly a tug and pull between Kat and Daemon as they struggle against their attraction to each other. We do get some cat/mouse type of battles between the Lux and the other shadow aliens, but not nearly enough to keep things interesting.Characters (4/5): The characters here were okay. I enjoyed Kat’s quirkiness but also thought she was a bit naive and dense. I enjoyed the relationship Kat has with her mother and also enjoyed some of the side characters Kat becomes friends with. I didn’t particularly like Daemon as a character, he’s pretty much your typical uber alpha male and not really the type of male lead I enjoy. Dee was a lot of fun and adds a lot of bounce to the story. In general all the characters were fine but nothing different from what you see in a lot of other YA paranormal literature. Setting (4/5): The whole book takes place in a small town in West Virginia. I didn’t mind the small town setting. Aside from some description of the Lux home world the setting really doesn’t drive much of the story.Writing Style (4/5): This was decently written but you can tell it is one of Armentrout’s earlier books. I felt like some of the dialogue where Kat and Daemon argue got old and was reused a lot. This is the third series I have read by Armentrout and I am starting to recognize that her lead characters always have a similar love/hate type of tone to their relationship. It’s something I like reading but it gets old if you read one book after another like that. I also thought the world building here and the premise were pretty thin. Additionally, Armentrout’s talent really shines during action scenes and there aren’t many of those in here.My Summary (3.5/5): Overall this was fine but not nearly as good as Armentrout’s Harbinger or Blood and Ash series. I don’t plan on continuing the series because the premise and world-building felt a bit thin to me and I didn’t love any of the characters in here. You can definitely tell this was an earlier book by her. I guess I am not a huge alien-as-my-next-door-neighbor type of fan...so...there’s that.

The best thing about this book is I could listen halfway and have the basic idea. First time ever using the 1.5 speed!!! I thought that would be crazy, until today....

It was addictive, but it also felt slow. What an odd combination. I loved how dangerous Daemon felt, but there was no real bite to that either. That piece felt like it fizzled out quite a bit.

I will not continue the series.

So I've heard a ton about these books on all the blogs and was really psyched when I saw a copy at my library last week. I wasted no time in getting down to reading it. And I'm a little divided on it. Part of it might be due to all the hype and high praises I've read on it everywhere so there's a good chance I expected way too much from the book. Don't misunderstand me, I enjoyed the book a lot. As a matter of fact, I read the entire thing in one sitting and couldn't bring myself to put it down. It just wasn't as great as I had thought it would be.

I really liked Katy. She's probably one of my favorite heroines. Not because she's kickass but because she's a lot like me. She seems like one of the most normal heroines I've come across. And I can see how Daemon's going to come around to being a really great hero even though he spent most of this book being a jerk. And all the hotness in the world can't make up for a bad or mean attitude. But I think Daemon was projecting that jerky attitude and his real self is going to be a whole lot more likable.

Now as the second book isn't available at my library and I am totally strapped for cash, it might be a while before I get to read the second book and find out!

Some of the best Twilight fan fiction I have read to date. Wait...it's not Twilight fanfic? In any event, this was a great guilty pleasure read, but definitely wasn't a stretch. At least the protagonist Katy is more palatable then Bella, as is Daemon who is more brassiness than brooding and more light than glitter. Entertaining even if predictable, and...are you SURE this isn't Twilight fanfic???Anyway, this rests comfortably betwixt a 3 and a 4. It was entertaining enough that I will definitely continue on with the series.

Supernatural space aliens living in West Virginia??? A bit of a stretch for the old imagination...even mine. I thought, when I found out about the "family next door"...that I probably would just gently close the covers of this one and say a few words over it before hauling it back to the library. For some reason I kept on reading. I soon found I had found a unique and entrancing story. The plot expands to a depth to where I wanted to keep going and find out how it played out. I really enjoyed what the author did when building the world that these aliens would share with the humans. She presented it in terms of how it could be if the events actually happened I don't know if I will read another of these books...not because they're bad..just not my particular types...but I found this one to be very good company.

LOVE!!!!!My only disappointment is that Kat and Daemon didn't hook up before the book ended.OMG!!! The chemistry between them was intense. I couldn't wait for them to get together.... and I'm still waiting. It's not entirely a bad thing. The build up to this romance is at the top of the charts. I loved the sci-fi aspect too, and usually that's not my thing. It definitely is here though. Can't wait to read the next one in the series.

I totally in lve with this book, before i didn’t like to read about aliens in many ways, but because everyone recommended this book to me so i read it. THIS BOOK IS AMAZING.It’s talk about romance between Katy and Deamon, and The Arum want to killed her bestfriend Dee, and who the same like Dee, to take their power. Deamon’s brother die because of those Arum, and because fall in love with a human, so to protect Dee, his sister, Deamon being a jerk to make Katy leave Dee, but instead he fell in love with Katy and use his power to protect her from danger, and that make Katy almost killed be one of the Arum because the trace still in her body. This book is the most amazing book i’ve ever read, love Katy personality, she can stand, argue, and fight back when Deamon and his friend being a jerk with her, she rather be kill than lead the Arum to where Dee and Deamon live, she never betray her best friend. The character in this book make everyone sacrifices and love the story even more.

This book was such a quick, fun read! I haven't read an alien book before, and I found these aliens to be so interesting. Katy was a great main character and I LOVED that she had a book blog. It was a little repetitive at times and the constant bickering between Katy and Daemon, although funny and filled with sexual tension, was almost too much sometimes. However, I'm invested in this story now I will be picking up the next book sometime in the future!

Ok, so usually I won't like these sort of books - the whole, guy has a secret identity, turns out to be non-human and falls for a human girl against his better judgement book. However, I was drawn to this because it doesn't have a love triangle, it didn't seem to have insta-love and the heroine didn't seem to neeeeeeeed the hero. For those alone, I enjoyed it.

So I got this as a free ebook on my Nook. It said it was about aliens in high school and I thought eh why not? I read it and then I was hooked. The main character Katy is pretty realistic and although this book follows the "Twilight Trope" that has become so popular in YA Fiction I feel like this book has something to offer.

First off when main characters Katy and Daemon first meet there isn't any insta love(YAY!). Daemon actually pisses Katy off and they spend the majority of the book fighting and basically being assholes to each other. Which was awesome. Katy becomes best friends with Daemon's twin sister Dee and Katy starts to notice weird things about the Black family and their close friends the more time she spends with them.

She finds out that their aliens and that the government has been basically covering up the existence of two alien races that have come to earth. The Luxen who are light based beings and the Arum who are dark based beings. Daemon and Dee are Luxen and Katy slowly gets tangled up in their world and ongoing battles with the Arum.

What I liked most about this book was Katy's character. She's funny, intelligent, runs a book blog, and basically a well rounded teenage character. She feels realistic to me as a sixteen to seventeen year old girl. The next thing I loved about this book was that they did poke fun at the similarities between it and Twilight. Jennifer L. Armentrout knows her audience well. Plus Daemon is described a super-hot but he's basically an asshole the entire time which I liked. He's trying to keep Katy and human at a distance after the disappearance of his and Dee's other brother and his human girlfriend. But Daemon and Katy undergo some really great character growth.

I have to admit after reading this book I bought the rest in the series as ebooks and I loved it. Sure sometimes I caught myself rolling my eyes at the characters because of their plotting and their attempts at being adults but I do that with real teenagers. All in all I would 100% recommend this book it made me laugh, it surprised me, it was predictable in some cases, but it was a great read!
