About this audiobook

Ryder Creed and his dogs have been making national headlines. They've intercepted several major drug stashes being smuggled through Atlanta's airport. But their newfound celebrity has also garnered some unwanted attention. When Creed and one of his dogs are called in to search a commercial fishing vessel, they discover a secret compartment. But the Colombian cartels' latest shipment isn't drugs. This time, its cargo is human. To make matters worse, Creed helps one of the cartel's drug mules escape-a fourteen-year-old girl who reminds him of his younger sister who disappeared fifteen years ago. Meanwhile, FBI agent Maggie O'Dell is investigating a series of murders-the victims tortured, killed, and dumped in the Potomac River. She suspects it's the work of a cunning and brutal assassin, but her politically motivated boss has been putting up roadblocks. By the time she uncovers a hit list with Creed's name on it, it might be too late. The cartel has already sent someone to destroy Creed and everyone close to him. But Creed and his dogs have a few surprises in store on their compound in Florida. Will it be enough to stop a ruthless cartel determined to remove the thorn in its side once and for all?

I would recommend to anyone who hasn't read any of the Maggie O'Dell novels to start at the beginning. The reason being is Nick Morrelli. He and Maggie made the books and when Nick moved on several books ago I felt the books lost their spark. Now Ryder Creed has arrived in Maggies life and this is the second book to feature him and looks like there is more to come. Ryder isn't Nick but I feel he will fill the hole that Nick left. The story itself for quite average but for me it's the character's lives. I like Maggie and I do like Ryder vety much so for me its carry on reading to see how things progress. Not the best book by far in the series but since Ryder Creed has been introduced the books have got their mojo back.

Last September, I happened to read an article about the top mystery series featuring working dogs, and Alex Kava's Ryder Creed series was on it. I've already sampled the others on the list and thought that it was high time I cracked open Breaking Creed. Boy howdy-- once I did, I didn't want to stop reading! Breaking Creed has all the hallmarks of a thriller: the breakneck pace, lots of action, multiple locations, and just the type of loathsome bad guys that made audiences boo! and hiss! in the old silent movie theaters. If that was all it had, it would be a good book, but it has a lot more.I loved getting to know Creed and seeing the perfect set-up he has for his dogs-- the kennels, the fact that he trains rescue dogs, and that he's building facilities for a veterinarian. I pretended that I was part of the audience in one of those old silent movie theaters when I learned what many of his neighbors were doing, and then there was the pleasure of seeing Creed at work with his dogs. I'm the type of person who believes one of the best things in life is to find oneself in the middle of a romping pile of puppies, so you know I'm thrilled with the burgeoning subgenre of working dog mysteries. There are some interesting secondary characters as well, like young Amanda and Jason, a vet who served in Afghanistan. Having Maggie O'Dell make an appearance from Kava's other series undoubtedly brought many Maggie fans over, but I'd never read a Maggie O'Dell mystery before. Guess what happened? Now I've added the Maggie O'Dell series to my Need-To-Read list. What can I say? I'm the type of reader who is disciplined enough to put my book down when it's necessary, but I was enjoying Breaking Creed so much that I read until I finished the book at 5 AM. I'm certainly looking forward to reading the other books in the series, but in the meantime... anyone got a couple of toothpicks so I can prop my eyelids open?

First off I want to say thx Goodreads & Putnam- I received this advanced readers copy through First Reads! On to the review...I was glad to see that Ryder and Grace are back. I read the earlier book Stranded first and really enjoyed it so Im glad to see they are getting a bigger part and their own series! I think the plot was good and the pacing was on target. The story didnt have alot of redundancy which I like. It also had enough action and suspense and if you like dogs, then you' should fall in love with Grace and the other search & rescue dogs. I havent really come across that many books that focused on search & rescue dogs with mystery & action thrown in so its a nice change I think and Im sure the series will go over well because of it.

This book was not up to par with books I read in the past. I finished it but it was better the more you got into it. The characters came together nicely and made the story flow with ease.

First of a new series featuring Ryder Creed and his dogs,. Like the human characters in this book, the dogs also have their own personality. Kava has done an excellent job with her short chapters of moving the story along. .

Breaking Creed introduces a new character for Alex Kava in the form of Ryder Creed. Creed is a dog trainer who helps law enforcement find everything from drugs to missing persons or bodies. He’s a likeable enough character, but I never completely warmed to him. Maggie O’Dell, the veteran of several other Alex Kava thrillers comes across as a more assured and likeable character. Her, along with Creed’s dogs (especially Grace) are the real stars of this book.Since the story here revolves around drug smugglers and one young girl’s attempts to escape them, half-hearted as it is, there should have been more sympathy for the girl. I just never liked her that much. Many of her actions, and Creed’s as well, were just too stupid to forgive. You can accept a certain amount of character stupidity if there is a reason for their actions, be it acting on bad information or making emotional decisions that are recognized as bad upon reflection. That doesn’t happen here. There is no excuse given for some of the mistakes and lapses in judgement. The bad guys aren’t much smarter, just more ruthless, which I guess evens things out. The action is good, especially an attack on Creed at his home which cleverly involves Creeds well trained dogs. The writing flows well and Maggie O’Dell is an interesting character, but the dogs are the real star of the show. I listened to the audio book and the narration was done well.Breaking Creed is an interesting book but not a standout. Maggie O’Dell is a more interesting character and I’m more likely to follow her stories than ones with Creed, although I will miss the dogs.I was fortunate to receive an advance copy of this book.

Having first read the second book in this series, I enjoyed it enough to go back and read the first. (Not the order I recommend.) I enjoyed this first book just as much as the second. This time Ryder takes on drug smugglers and child traffickers, but it is not horribly explicit. Well, there is some human torture. I can deal with that. I love that the dogs are such an integral part of these books, and I love that they are well cared for. The dedication and the explanation of the dedication are touching.I wasn't surprised by the surprise at the end of the book, but that did not affect my enjoyment. There is a little romance, but not too much. The characters are strong and likable – the good guys anyway. Creepy critters, nonhuman as well as human, abound. This is an easy read, an entertaining book for anyone who enjoys thrillers/mysteries, but especially for the animal lovers among us.

Ryder Creed and his search and rescue dogs are gaining national attention. He is glad to be doing this work, but would just as soon not be famous. He and Grace are on a job searching for drugs when they find kids that are being trafficked. On his way home with Gracie a girl that is being used as a drug mule breaks away from her handler and gets help from Ryder. He decides to help her and enlists his housekeeper Hannah. This sets off a series of events that are filled with action, suspense and a few twists. Maggie O'Dell (a central character in another series) is investigating a case that crosses over with what Ryder is doing. The need to work together quickly before they become victims of this Cartel. Excellent narration by Graham Winton. I look forward to the next book in this series.

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. I have not read any books in the author's Maggie O'Dell series, so I don't know her back story. She is introduced as a character in this new series about Ryder Creed and they have a lot of chemistry. Creed rescues dogs and trains them as search animals—cadaver dogs, drug sniffers, etc.. He often works with the FBI and other agencies, which is how he meets Maggie. He is haunted by the fact that his sister is missing and harbors a hope to find her someday.Several characters are introduced and each one's personality develops throughout the book. The best part for me are the scenes between Ryder and his dogs, highlighting their training and cooperation. I'm looking forward to reading future entries in the series.

Alex Kava writes another book that just can't be put down! This audiobook was very well narrated. Ryder Creed is a K-9 search and rescue handler who helps Maggie O'Dell on a case that crosses paths with one he is working on. Could there be a sizzle between him and Maggie?? Great story, had to idle at my destination several times because I couldn't stop listening!

I'm not big on audio books and honestly thought that since I had already read this book I wouldn't enjoy the audio version. Wrong?! The audio version was just as enjoyable. The star of this book, in my opinion, are Ryder Creed's dogs, especially his dog Grace. Ryder and his K9 company were introduced in a previous Maggie O'Dell story, and they team up once again in this series spin-off. Add in a drug cartel, human trafficking, and military veterans and the story becomes more than just enjoyable but one you'll want to read (or listen to) without interruption. Mr. Winton's narration added to my overall enjoyment, and his narrative style isn't dry nor overly florid.

Ryder Creed, ex marine and k9 handler, with his Jack Russell Terrier, Grace, are on assignment with the US Coast Guard. While scenting for cocaine on a fishing vessel, Grace finds several stolen children in the cargo hold beneath a load of fish.Creed with his partner, Hannah, own the business, K9 CrimeScents, where they train dogs for search and rescue, to find bombs, drugs and cadavers. While on his way home from the latest assignment, Creed and Grace are asked for help from a young girl who has become a drug mule for Leandro, who runs one of the drug cartels out of Colombia. I listened to Alex Kava's excellent action thriller on audiobook and thoroughly enjoyed the story. Breaking Creed is the first book in a new series and I look forward to listening to the next book, Silent Creed.

“Breaking Creed” is the first book in a new series about dog handler Ryder Creed by Alex Kava, best known for her series featuring FBI agent Maggie O’Dell. I haven’t read any of those books but I suspect those who have may recognize Creed as O’Dell appears in his book and they appear to have some history together. Creed’s adventure is an entertaining thriller, especially for those with a soft spot for dogs. I was intrigued by her description of how search dogs work. It was apparent that Kava loved dogs even before her touching author’s note at the end. She dedicated the series to her dog ‘Scout’ who had kept her company while writing all of her previous books but passed away as she was finishing this one. Unfortunately, while the story is interesting, it falls short in the plausibility department. Early on, he encounters a young drug mule who is afraid that one of the cocaine condoms inside her has burst. Does he inform the customs officials he is working for or take her to a hospital. No, he takes her to his home. Granted, this assures the story will be exciting buy making himself a target for the cartel but it also destroys his reputation for making wise decisions. He makes a similar crazy decision when O’Dell goes into anaphylactic shock after suffering multiple scorpion stings. I listened to and enjoyed the audio recording by Graham Winton. He did an excellent job and was a very good choice for the roll of Ryder Creed.Bottom line: While this is an entertaining thriller, its implausible story keeps it from being exceptional. * This review book was based on an advanced reading copy obtained at no cost from the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review. While this does take any ‘not worth what I paid for it’ statements out of my review, it otherwise has no impact on the content of my review.

Though I'm familiar with the name of Alex Kava, I've never actually read one of her books (I didn't know Alex was a "she" until picking up this one). This particular Early Reviewer title appealed to me because it was on audio. Breaking Creed is the debut of a new series by Alex Kava, starring Ryder Creed, who trains search-and-rescue dogs. Apparently Creed is not necessarily a new character, as he's been introduced in Kava's earlier Maggie O'Dell novels. And Maggie makes her appearance in this one too. This particular novel has two storylines that merge together, both centering around drug smuggling. There are a lot of thrillers written about the drug trade, but this one is somewhat unique in that the search dogs play a fairly large role. As a standalone book, this was a pretty decent read. I didn't find it spectacular, but the role of the dogs made it interesting, and it was intriguing enough that I would be interested in following along with future books in the series. My chief complaint was that this story almost read like an abridgement, though it was not. It was almost too short, and I felt it could've been better had there been more detail and elaboration with both the dogs and the major characters.

Breaking Creed was my first Alex Kava novel and I really enjoyed it. I understand that it is the first in the new Ryder Creed series. I started listening to in in an audio edition whie communting but it really peaked my interest. I didnt want to wait till I was driving to listen to it again so I quickly finished it at home. I am looking forward to continuing the series and reading more adventures with these human and dog characters. They were well developed, interesting and pretty believeable, including Ryder, Maggie and Ryder’s dog Grace with her pink elephant. The concept of adopting and training rescue dogs for such a large variety of important tasks sends a great message. Drugs, seducition and abuse of young women and the challenges that some of our vetrans face were all themes explored or touched on in the story line. The pace of action, the mystery and intrigue were well excuted. In the audio version, the narrator did a very good job with pace and voice quality which is important as the actor/reader can often enhance or destroy the enjoyment of a books story. This was a very good book and I rate it 4 stars. Thank you to LibraryThing for the review copy.

So often when I leave a review, I complain that the author had excess verbiage that would have been better left out. Breaking Creed, a great story, felt at times more like an outline than a novel. At times, the storyilne felt too rushed. It was a great suspense read, though, and I reallyliked the dogs, who were really the outstanding characters in this book!

The work that dogs and their handlers do in fighting crime is fantastic. I am constantly amazed by what we can train our dogs to do. This book is about one handler and his dogs and the people he has come to call family versus the evil people who run drugs and feel as though they have a right to other people's lives. The good guys win but not without struggle and pain.

This was one of my favorite books with Creed and O'Dell. This keeps your mind moving. What will happen next. Who will get hurt next. This just motives so smoothly. I look forward to more books with Creed and O'Dell. I received an ebook copy from FirsttoRead for a fair and honest opinion.

It has been a long time since I have read a book by this author. I was lucky enough to score an early copy of this book. It was even better than I would have thought. I could not stop reading this book. I finished it over the weekend. Both Ryder and Maggie's storylines were equally strong. Sometimes when there are dueling storylines, one side is not as strong. The way that they both combined than was nice. It fit like a missing piece of a puzzle. Plus all of the other characters in the story helped add to the story. They did not feel like just secondary characters who were in the story just because there needed to be other people. All of Ryder's dogs were stars as well. I can not pick one as my favorite. I would have said Grace because she was more of the main dog but then other of Ryder's dogs made appearances as well and they each showed their own special talent. I look forward to reading more about Ryder and Maggie. They look to make a great team and I look forward to seeing what type of relationship they have together. Breaking Creed is a must read that will leave you wanting more.
