And another book that will definitely not enter the "100 books you have to have in your library". Ex-cop-turned-Sherif-turned-Ranger stumbles over dead black bear, two-legged corpse and poached puma and thinks "Something is fishy here!" A lot of sleuthing ensues, hero being accompanied by slightly nerdy side-kick and sexy female with brains. A 60 year old mystery gives it the necessary puzzlement factor. And just to brighten up the plot, you learn how to catch a pony with a lasso and how to exterminate the mice living under your floor boards without contracting the Hanta virus.... What can I say, not high literature, but I read it in 2 days!

Detective aka cowboy aka rancher mystery not quite thriller.

    These are good entertainment.

Michael McGarrity's saga is even better.

Story Synopsis: Kevin Kerney has gotten a new job working in the Gila Wilderness as a seasonal worker. While on patrol he is called to investigate a poaching incident. But poaching isn’t the only crime in which he gets involved. As he works to find out who shot his partner, he must solve not only the poaching crimes but also a sixty year-old murder.Review: The Gila Wilderness provides a vivid setting for this exciting mystery. The characters are well developed and plot keeps the reader involved throughout.

Another in the successful series of mysteries featuring Kevin Kearny. All of the mysteries take place in the southwest, which drew me to read them in the first place. A fine writer, who certainly knows knows the ins-and-outs of police work, having been one himself. I rank McGarrity up there with John Straley for tough, well-written mysteries set in the outdoors.

The afternoon I spent with this Kevin Kearney mystery was time so well spent, that I could have flipped the book over and started again.

Kevin Kerney was a childhood rodeo star who became chief of detectives in Santa Fe until he received a medical retirement due to being shot on the job. He's working as a seasonal forest ranger in the Gila Wilderness and attempting to earn money to restore an abandoned homeland for a cattle operation. He's called to an outlying ranch where there is evidence of poaching a bear. The rancher thinks it is a trophy kill.Kerney begins questioning other ranchers about poachers and comes across an elderly Mexican who is dehydrated and delusional. He takes the man to the hospital. There are vivid depictions of the rough terrain of the Gila Wilderness of New Mexico. We meet the gritty people who live in the area and try to keep to themselves. The people seem solid but there are secrets hidden under their stoicism. The author tells of two families. One, named Cox, is wealthy but hiding a secret that has haunted them for over sixty years. The other is the family of the elderly Mexican. The Padilla's are looking to right a wrong that also happened sixty years ago.I enjoyed the images of the southwest and the rugged cowboy turned police detective. Kerney is the wounded warrior who is still proud of the work he does and tries to bring justice to the wild west.
