About this audiobook

When singer, musician, and broadcast journalist Malka Marom had the opportunity to interview Joni Mitchell in 1973, she was eager to reconnect with the performer that she'd first met late one night in 1966 at a Yorkville coffeehouse. More conversations followed over the next four decades of friendship, and it was only after Joni and Malka completed their last recorded interview, in 2012, that Malka discovered the heart of their discussions: the creative process.

In Joni Mitchell: In Her Own Words, Joni and Malka follow this thread through seven decades of life and art, discussing the influence of Joni's childhood, love and loss, playing dives and huge festivals, acclaim and criticism, poverty and affluence, glamorous triumphs and tragic mistakes.

Wonderful insight into Joni's thinking process. But.... since the narrator claimed she had recorded all of these interviews, I was perplexed that she didn't just provide us with the recording itself. It would have been so much more meaningful.

Such a wonderful account of Joni's work and life in her own words!

Very nice! Excellent content to get to know the wonderful woman and artist Joni is. Only thing a bit annoying, but I understand necessary, was the constant repeating of Malka: and Joni: right before each question and answer.

Oh, Joni...you're such a weirdo... I have, for years now, been disabused of the notion that Joni Mitchell has any sort of sanity, so there were no surprises for me here. She's one of the few artists I love that I have to separate from the person...so I suppose it was with this mindset that I chose this as the audiobook to accompany me during all my subway commuting this week, and it was pretty darn entertaining. She is so problematic. How does she write such resonant songs?

I really enjoyed this compilation of interviews with Joni Mitchell over a 40 year span of time. No wonder she so polarizing in terms of her reputation. She is genuine, outspoken, intelligent, articulate, and profound. Strong women contend with other people's sense of intimidation, and Joni Mitchell is no different. Such a true artist!

Fans of Joni Mitchell's artistry will enjoy these transcribed interviews that the artist conducted over a period of decades with the author, her friend. One learns how focused--obsessed--Mitchell is with forging into new areas and combining her extraordinary musicality with her insightful and moving lyrics (or poetry). In addition, Mitchell is an accomplished visual artist and she describes how each facet of her creativity combines to make her such a distinctive talent. But her necessity to control is also a drawback in that what is revealed is controlled; her interviewer is a friend and doesn't delve into areas that a more conventional biography might cover: for example, Mitchell's relationships and her commercial impact. What's here introduces readers to much they may not have know--such as the illness that debilitates the artist. And her commitment to creative growth--and damn the expectations of critics and fans. However, a fuller and more dimensional assessment would provide a richer understanding of this beloved performer.

This is a fascinating glimpse into one of the most creative minds of our time. It is not intended as autobiography. It is much more about Joni's artistic process than about her life, so those still hoping for a definitive biography need to manage their expectations. It's a shame that the press has cherry-picked some of Joni's negative comments and experiences to feast on. Her chronic kvetching is actually less depressing - and annoying - when it's in the context of a larger conversation, such as this work. I didn't walk away feeling sorry for Joni; I walked away feeling amazed.
