If you enjoyed the Woody Allen movie Midnight in Paris, you'll probably enjoy this book as well, although it doesn't have the fantasy element. An American detective couple careen through the Paris of the Twenties -- they even meet Christie and Simenon! And, there's a locked-room mystery to solve. Very enjoyable.

After I started this book, I realized it's actually the second in a series. But it read fine as a standalone - this book includes two Peterson Detectives and from what I can tell, book #1 describes how they joined the agency and met each other.Following a somewhat traditional mystery track, this book used a style which I find interesting (when done well) - the introduction of well known personalities into the thread. This one did some of them well (I now feel like I actually know a little about Gertrude Stein) but there were also superfluous and silly uses of the concept, with one line reading something like "Look, there's Henry James" and no other references to James.Still, it was a good and interesting read giving a very good "feel" of Paris in the 20's, with some action and character development which kept it moving.

I read this at the urging of a friend who said it was much better than the first book in the series. I have to agree with her on that. I wasn't as turned off by all the product placement, and there wasn't the name dropping in this like there was in the first book. I'm definitely interested in reading more.

I liked this book better than the first one. The author spent a bit of time on the other characters so we got a lot of character development all the way around. I'm not dying to rush out and buy the series or cancel all plans just so I can read these books but I am curious to see how the author develops the characters and where the story goes which is good.

It had potential, but I feel it didn't go deep enough to really draw me into the story.

I continue to be sucked in by this series. The differences between these books and the majority of the vampire genre make the books more interesting. The intrigue of the mystery of the Silver Bloods keep you on the edge of your seat. The complicated relationships have you scratching your head and changing your favorites from page to page. It's an exciting world that de la Cruz has created for us, and I find myself devouring the books!

it's been like an hour and a half, and I am on chapter 10. it is an easy read but I am not really comfortable about the whole brother/sister lovers cambo!!! it is disturbing! I can't believe Bliss and Schuyler are sisters!!

Schuyler Van Alen wants an explanation for the mysterious deaths of young vampires. With her best friend, Oliver, Schuyler travels to Italy in the hope of finding the one man who can help her.... her "grandfather." Meanwhile, back in New York, preparations are feverishly under way for the Four Hundred Ball, an exclusive gala hosted by the city's wealthy, powerful and a true Blue Blood affair. But it's at the after-party, a masquerade ball thrown by the cunning Mimi Force, that the real danger lurks. Hidden behind the masks is a revelation that will forever change the course of a young vampire's destiny. Rich with glamour, attitude, and vampire lore, this second installment in the Blue Bloods saga will leave readers thirsting for more.

Okay I don't know why but I found this book way better then the first Blue Blood book. I am way glad I decided to give it a chance. In this book it finally becomes apparent to the council that the Silver Bloods are still around. Mimi almost gets what she deserves and it definitely seems like there is alot going on with Bliss that points to her becoming a silver blood, also Dylan comes back from the dead at the very end. I can't wait to find out what happens in the next book.

This book was really good book and I enjoyed reading it very well. This book is different from other books and sometimes hard to understand but when you get the hang of it you find yourself drawn into the story like you were there yourself. The end of this book really left me eager for more as it was very mysterious and the story felt very realistic. If you are searching for a book that is thrilling, mysterious and fantasy this is the book for you.

Oh good grief, Masquerade is even worse than Blue Bloods. The first handful of pages are devoted to awkward exposition, recapping the ENTIRE FIRST BOOK, which most people will have READ ALREADY.Every single thing that I thought was being "hinted" at in the last book came to pass in this one; the twists were predictable, and the bits of writing that were supposed to be from the nineteenth century were laughably horrible. Did newspaper articles, even in the late 1800s, really mention in every article about a missing girl that the girl was "pretty"?There were some bits strewn in about a photoshoot for a magazine, and in those bits there were a lot of weird irrelevant details thrown around, like what was written on the papers attached to racks of clothing. It felt like the author knew the setting and couldn't help but show off her knowledge, even though it had NOTHING TO DO with the story. The fashion talk was still annoying, but there seemed to be less of it in Masquerade. One other thing that annoyed me: the further I got into this series, the more Schuyler felt like a Mary Sue.I think I'm ending my journey with this series here. Interesting idea, but I have too many books in my TBR pile to waste any more time on these.

These books really are ridiculous, but I can't help but get drawn in. I am such a sucker for superfluous descriptions of clothes and makeup and this book delivers that in spades, which somewhat makes up for the glaringly obvious plot "twists". I don't know what it says about me, but I'll be continuing the series whenever I need a brain break. Fluffy fluff.

I really enjoyed this one. The story is so different to all the other books out there at the moment, and really stands out to me. The writing is also excellent. While I still don't feel like Schuyler is developed enough, she was a lot better in this one than the previous book. I would definitely like the series more if her character was more solid and stood up for herself. The storyline was interesting, and unpredicatable. It was a fun read and I'm really looking forward to reading the next book.

The Saga of the Blue Bloods continues in the second installment entitled Masquerade. The book follows Schuyler Van Alen who has been revealed to be a half-blue blood and half-human, and is now getting use to her new powers and way of life. After her grandmother sends her on a journey to find her long lost grandfather, Schuyler and Oliver find their way to Italy with some hope of finding the elusive man.Meanwhile, back in New York City the committee is preparing for the Four Hundred Ball where all the vampire families are invited the the Masquerade and a revelation that changes the course of many lives.I liked this second book a lot better then the first. I think it's because I liked the premise of this one better and the whole idea of the Four Hundred Ball. Schuyler's journey also got a bit more dramatic and exciting now that her blood line is out in the open. We see the familiar faces of old and new characters as they try to investigate the secrets that the committee is hiding and the mystery behinds several blue bloods deaths. This book even starts to take on a darker side, as it keeps you in the edge of your seat.I still like Schuyler's, I think she makes a great character. I love that she is only part blue blood but her mother's story is just a little heart wrenching. It also leaves a lot of questions, of why she did it. There are even times I feel almost bad for Charles Force, but in the end, Schuyler is still my favorite. Poor Oliver, has probably been through one emotional roller-coaster tagging along Schuyler's side as her infatuation for Jack Force grows even deeper.Which brings me to the twins. I know I know. They are vampire twins and it doesn't mean they are related, they are just two bonded lovers that must find themselves over and over again in their new lifetime. The fact that Mimi and Jack are suppose to be lovers, but are born to be human twins – brother and sister- I still have a hard time getting past that, it can make scenes awkward. Thought the background story and everything that has been going on in the book has managed to take my mind of the awkward stuff and focus on the more thrilling appeal of the Blue Bloods world that the author has enticed us with.

This book was better than the first. The plot was interesting, and it was developed much earlier on in the book, which kept me reading. Some new characters were introduced and they added depth and intrigue to the story, both of which were missing in the first book. I think this is a good book to read in between books, but it's nothing fantastic. However, this book ended with a cliff hanger that makes me want to read the next one more. Also in this book I actually started to care about the characters a little, in the sense of I care if they live or die, win or loose. I think there is potential for the next in the series to be better than this one was also!

Mini Review: Fantastic continuation of the series. I enjoyed this one even more than the first novel in the series. The history of the blue bloods is more fleshed out and there is a lot better character development in this installment of the series. There are tons of twists and turns in the plot and it keeps you guessing about what is going on. I like the heroine Schuyler as I find her rather sweet and real. I also enjoy her connection with her best friend Oliver as it really is an honest portrayal of what happens when friends start to grow up and the change in feelings that can occur. I am still irritated by all the mentions of designer clothes and beautiful people, but I do know that these books are not written for frumpy middle class moms like me. But it does affect my enjoyment of the story, hence why I give it 4, not 5 Dewey's. The intended audience for these books will probably enjoy this and give it a higher rating, but just wanted to be honest for those in the same category as me. 4 Dewey'sMy neighbor's daughter Keira lent me this and the the next book in the series. I am not required to review this at all, just really enjoy the series and want you all to know about it too.

For the second book of a series, it was a fairly good book. There were some parts that the author should've focused more on just a little bit, but other than that it was good.

The story opens with Schuyler Van Allen in Venice with her best friend Oliver looking for her grandfather. When she finds him he's not as interested in the issue as she hoped he would be. She has to return to New York to deal with the issues and to try to come to terms with her change to vampirism, she also has to deal with her relationship with people around her, and the fact that apart from her grandfather, she's alone in the world, and he isn't her legal guardian! It's not bad, there were places that were glossed over very quickly but that's somewhat to be expected with a YA book. However there were also places that things jumped a little too quickly and then slowed down too quickly afterwards. Consequences were hinted at but not shown.

This is the second book in the Blue Bloods series by Melissa de la Cruz. I was pleasantly pleased with this book. After reading both Melissa Marr's "Ink Exchange" and the remainder of the House of Night series I have to say, I think Melissa de la Cruz writes much better than either of those authors.Schuyler travels to Italy with Oliver in hopes of finding her grandfather; she hopes he can help her figure out how to fight the Silver Bloods. Meanwhile the Blue Blood community is planning the Four Hundred Ball and at Duchesne School Mimi is planning an exclusive after party. Also a mysterious new kid, Kingsley, enters the scene. Will Schuyler find what she seeks? What will happen to Mimi as she walks a darker and darker path?I like this book better than the first book of this series. There is a lot more plot and things move along at a fast clip. It was nice to see Schuyler doing something productive and really taking the initiative. The tension between Oliver/Schuyler/Jack and Jack/Schuyler/Mimi continues to make things interesting. In this book you feel like things are kind of building to a climax as you find out more and more about the Silver Blood taint within the Blue Blood community. This book is also a fun read if you like fashion and reading about the elite. There are a couple good fashion shoots that Bliss and Schuyler attend and some discussion about style and fashion in general. I happen to enjoy fashion so I find these parts of the book to be interesting and entertaining.I thought many of the characters really filled out in this book. I also thought that this book was more linear and didn't jump between characters in a way that was as distracting as the first book. All in all I really enjoyed the book and am eagerly awaiting the next book. Just remember these are books to read for fun and really aren't all that deep. Although I will say that this book had more depth than the first book.

I really do enjoy this series. The plot is really good and intricate, with surprises on every page. The vampire lore is also very interesting and original. The writing isn't the best though, and I'm not a fan of all the fashion brands mentioned everywhere. I'm not invested in the characters, and couldn't care less what happens to them. I am interested in the plot though, and will continue to read the series to see where it goes.

It is official. I LOVE this series. The haters can continue hating. It's so hard to put it down. Especially now that I have grown to like Schuyler. Plus I read how the vampires in this book are different form the others. They are so not typical undead, they are actually fallen angels banished from heaven. Yes, like Lucifer. There' also other angels involved like Michael, Gabrielle, Abbadon and Azrael. But I am not saying who they are. That my friends' are for you to find out. Fast paced, suspenseful, and thrilling. Book 2 possessed a stronger plot, twist that will make you say Whhhaaat?!, what's hot and what's not in fashion (ex: BobiAnne's head to toe LV attire. Lol) and the insightful knowledge about the histories (or at least snippets of it) of our main characters. Some of their histories were revealed to, making me more aggravated that I have not bought the 3rd book yet. Is Schuyler and Bliss really sisters? What's up with Jack Force? (he is making me mad), is Allegra ever going to wake up from her self-induced coma? And now that Charles Force adopted our heroine, what heartaches and trouble will she get into this time?

The continuing story of Schuyer Van Allen and her vampire (and non-vampire) friends. The story open with Schuyler searching Venice for her grandfather, a man who disappeared from the Blue Blood community long ago. She is hoping he will be able to provide her with answers in her search for the killer of her fellow young vampires. The characters are written in a way that they are still growing and changing before your eyes. As they adjust to their vampire traditions and realize that there really is something out there hunting them. The not so nice are still not so nice, but in a way that you grow attached to...after all someone has to be the school "mean girl".I would have liked to see more of Italy, but alas the author quickly takes us back to New York to contiue the story. While the book does fall into what I call the "second in a series curse", the pitfall of second books to be so much development and set up for the third that they are slow and uneventful, this one pulls itself out of it rather quickly. The ending has a bit of a twist at the end that left me gaping and wishing I was as devoted to doing the right thing as the character was. We see a small portion of the mystery come to a close, only to open an entirely new one...onto book three!3/5

Schuyler and Oliver are off to Venice to try and find her grandfather and fulfill her grandmothers last request. Instead of the help they are looking for they find a coward and must return home. Now, she must figure out the mystery of the Silver Bloods by herself. But with the death toll growing the vampires soon realize that they have a traitor among them. The only problem now is figuring out who it is.

Masquerade did not disappoint me at all. It had action, romance, suspense, and of course vampires. As the sequel to Blue Bloods, I thought Masquerade was just as excellent as the first. All throughout it left me wondering, and I couldn't put the book down. I love how the characters interact and just love reading about them. The ending was perfect and left me hanging. I'm excited to read the third book Revelations which I just bought in paperback. The fourth book the Van Alen Legacy will be released October 6, 2009.
