About this audiobook

Twelve. Twelve of the deadliest beasts ever forged in the fires of hell have escaped onto our plane, and they want nothing more than to rip out the jugular of Charley Davidson and serve her lifeless, mangled body to Satan for dinner. So there's that. But Charley has more on her plate than a mob of testy hellhounds. For one thing, her father has disappeared, and the more she retraces his last steps, the more she learns he was conducting an investigation of his own, one that has Charley questioning everything she's ever known about him. Add to that an ex-BFF who is haunting her night and day, a rash of suicides that has authorities baffled, and a drop-dead sexy fiancé who has attracted the attentions of a local celebrity, and Charley is not having the best week of her life. But all of that combined barely scratches the surface of her problems. Recent developments—and a few distressing prophesies—have forced her to become a responsible adult. Exactly the kind of adult she's never aspired to be. To conquer such a monumental task, she's decided to start small. Really small. She gets a pet. But how can she save the world against the forces of evil when she can't even keep a goldfish alive?

A tad north of hell, a hop, skip, and a jump past the realm of eternity, is a little place called Earth, and Charley Davidson, grim reaper extraordinaire, is determined to do everything in her power to protect it.
We're doomed.

I'm just so sick of Charley's attitude! All of the things that make her so relatable, are also the things that make her annoying. She just rushes into hullabaloo after hullabaloo with no regard for anyone else's safety.

"We need to get her out of here-now," said Reyes to the Dealer. "You don't have to tell me twice", responded Charley. But yeah, yeah, you do. You have to tell her over and over again, and she still doesn't listen, and people die because of her, and because she gets a little bummed, it's all ok.

Nah, this is the last book for me by this author. If I want to be annoyed, I'll read the news.

I loved this newest installment in this series! I think the addition of Beep is super cute. There was as many twists and turns as I would come to expect in a Charley Davidson novel and I found Reyes to be a completely charming character this time around. In the end my heart was ripped out for Charlie and I hope that their time on sacred ground is therapeutic for her and that they are able to bring justice for her family member in the next book.

The Charley Davidson series is one of my favorites, as I love Charley's meandering mind and the funny things she says -- including those she doesn't realize are funny!

I've said this in reviews of earlier books in the series, but I could do without some of the borderline pornographic sex scenes, which are hard to just skip over because I'm listening to the audiobook version. But the characters and story are so enjoyable that I'm willing to just turn down the volume on occasion :-)

Another exciting book in the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones! Charley is amassing quite a cast of characters to help her figure out the mystery that is her, Beep, and Reyes Farrow, and how to best prepare for the conflict to come. Cookie is there, of course, as is Uncle Bob, but you start to see how everybody has a place in all of this, and I love that. There's also the matter of a missing father, a rash of possible suicides (or are they?), and a ghost who needs help finding her body when it goes missing from her grave, and Charley's dance card is definitely full. Highly recommend - 5/5 stars.

Disclaimer: This review will be biased and unbalanced. I have love for this series and my objectivity suffers proportionally. I truly left off 1/2 star just because I'm certain there are probably flaws (all books have them) but my love for Charlie and the gang have blinded me to whatever they might be. So a couple of days ago I was feeling rather sorry for myself. I injured my back – nothing serious, truly; just enough to put a hitch in my gitalong and make me feel mopey and old. My husband came home and put a book package on the coffee table. After I pointed out the cruelty of putting a new book on a surface that was just out of my reach (can't bend down, of course), he handed it to me and upon opening it discovered my copy of Seventh Grave and No Body. Proof that God takes pity on me, because I NEVER get my pre-ordered books on release day; living on the tail end of the world means everything always takes days later to arrive than it does for the U.S./Europe. Suddenly my back injury was a spend-all-day-reading free card, and boy howdy did I use it. So in the last book prophesies about Charlie's existence and her role in the final battle became clearer. In this one, Charlie starts finding out what she's truly capable of. Reyes always told her she was more powerful than any other being, but Charlie always seemed to view it as rhetoric. Now she finds out it isn't, but that she can still get her ass handed to her when she leasts expects it. Circumstances are also forcing her to confront her immaturity too; big changes are coming and she can't keep living in the shallow end of the maturity pool. I always loved Charlie - even when her sass and snark were obvious coping mechanisms - but I quite like the (only slightly) more mature version too. She still hides behind sarcasm and smart-ass banter, but she's also utterly selfless and has a firm grip on what's important. As with all the books, there are several story lines running simultaneously; human mysteries as well as mythical ones. I like this style - it keeps things moving and avoids that mid-book bogging down that sometimes happens. My only complaint: one of the story lines (a small one that has no meaning to the overall plot of this book) doesn't get wrapped up and I wanted to know what happened. The sub-plot setting reminded me of the X-Files episode "Closure" and I was sorry not to find out how it ends. I'm not going to say more - although I could babble ad naseum, because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone. Things happen. Big things. Suffice it to say that I loved reading it, I'm sorry it's over, and how many days until book 8?

The story is getting better and better, the characters more developed and while still very funny, is sometimes quite touching.

I almost cried when Charley healed Jessica's nephew, it was quite touching. A girl who betrayed her and continued to pick on her, making fun of her and stalking her fiance.

The series plot continues to get deeper and more mysterious. I'm off to read book 8 to see what happens.

[Seventh Grave and No Body] by Darynda Jones. I continue to love this series about the lovable, snarky, PI, Charlie Davidson who can speak to the dead, a feat that both complicates her life and makes crime-solving easier. And I have hooked both my daughter, her friend and my sister on it! This is book #7; I am trying to read only one a month to make the series last longer. My sister said "not waiting" and has already cruised past me and is on #9. She said there is a big change in #8--hurry up December so I can find out what's happening!

Charley Davidson, private investigator and Grim Reaper, has her hands full. In addition to having an over-protective fiancé and twelve Hellhounds on her trail, her father has disappeared and seems to investigating a case on his own; her deceased former BFF is driving her insane and someone is kidnapping people and staging their suicides. All in a day's work one would think, but Charley has also decided to give up coffee and it is not going well…

While Charley is a fabulous heroine and one can never have enough Reyes, this installment is one of the weakest in the series.

Although there are some vague details on Charley's origins and growing abilities, there are relatively few developments in the overall Hellhound/Satan/Prophecy story arc. The secondary plot involving the rash of strange suicides has potential. Unfortunately, it is underdeveloped and there are insufficient clues to solve the mystery before the big reveal.

Charley's signature snarkiness and quirky humor is in full force, which may please the fans. But for me it is starting get somewhat old and the time has come for her to grow up, especially considering that she is about to become a wife and mother.

Reyes, however, is the perfect man (albeit a little overbearing). The extent of his love for Charley is simply incredible as it becomes clear that he will do literally anything for her even to his own detriment, which is somewhat disconcerting.

The secondary characters are wonderful - Cookie, UB, Osh (formerly known as The Dealer), Swopes - all put in an appearance and it is great catching up with them.

All in all, this series has such amazing potential. I can only hope that the next few books will live up to expectations.

This series is really ramping up and book seven of the series has a lot of violence as the hell hounds have appeared and are out to kill Charley. Now with Beep growing in her belly, Charley has more to protect. Charley also is slowly learning more of what kind of powers she has and who she is in the other world. Can't wait for book eight!

Sayings at the beginning of the chapters are still snort worthy.

If you are not already reading this series, you should get in gear and get going. This book is one wild ride for Charley, a grim reaper, who is engaged to Reyes, the son of Satan. She has just found out she is pregnant and the prophesies say that their child will raise an army and defeat Satan and that there will be peace for a thousand years. So, much to Charley's irritation, Reyes is not letting her out of his sight, especially since someone has let loose the twelve hounds of hell in order to kill her and Reyes, and their possible ally, The Dealer, a demon who escaped hell, where he was known as the warrior for the many fights he won, can not make a dent in these creatures, it's up to Charley to figure something out.On top of this, a ghost who actually hangs out in the cemetery in order to watch her body slowly decay finds not only her body but that of others missing and asks Charley to help. She's also helping an FBI agent she's helped in the past that knows there's something different about Charlie and that she knows things somehow, asks her to look at a cold case where some camp councilors and a few kids are killed at a camp that is just opening up for the summer. When Charlie goes there, she finds more kids there than should be. This is a dumping ground for a serial killer who likely killed the others because they stumbled across what he was doing. Also, she is haunted by a dead enemy from her high school years and her uncle, a cop, is dealing with a rash of people leaving nearly identical suicide notes and then disappearing. There seems to be no connection between these people.Charley worries about being a mother since she cannot even manage to keep a goldfish alive. She is beginning to realize how vast her powers can be. She's been told many times by Angel, her gangster ghost who works for her, and Reyes that she can literally do anything she wants. In previous books, she has discovered the ability to stop time and exist outside of it and keep a bullet from hitting someone and the ability to rip someone's heart out of their chest, which scares her. Her bright light can destroy demons, but she is capable of so much more, including getting the drop on Reyes with a few words of Latin. The bounty hunter, Garrett, has discovered from ancient texts that she came from another plane where she was to ascend to the throne as a god but chose instead to be born on earth as a grim reaper where she could do the most good. Names have power and if you know the true name of a being, you can have control over them. Charley does not know her true name, though Reyes does. He is afraid that if she knows it, she will cease to be human and become a permanent grim reaper, losing her forever. It's a busy time for Charley and her father has disappeared, off on his own investigation of her, but she still has her partner and best friend, Cookie, who gives up coffee with her to show her support. The world has become a dangerous place for Charley with lots of beings out to kill her and an unknown future. This is one of the best books in the series. Charley is more than her usual sarcastic self without her daily gallons of coffee. She is also worried that she will not be able to keep her baby alive or raise her if she does. This is a unique series that is both humorous and action packed, as well as being filled with a very sexy Reyes who you would never turn away from your door.QuotesI often question my sanity. This is the 7th book in the Charley Davidson series; the 11th book in the series was released in Jan 2017. This was a great continuation of this series! I love how we are learning more and more about the Twelve, the story just keeps getting more interesting.I listened to this on audiobook and these audiobooks are incredibly well done. I would highly recommend this whole series on audiobook if you enjoy audiobooks. There is a ton action and things are getting more and more intriguing. Each book has a number of different story elements that come together to form a cohesive whole. This book was focused more on Charley and the Twelve than on individual investigation of ghosts...and to be honest I liked this format even more than previous books.Charley's powers continue to expand in new and interesting ways; she does a lot of new things with her power and learns a lot about herself in this book. She is just as goofy and silly as ever but in general this book had a more serious tone to it than previous books in the series.Of course Reyes, Cookie, and all our other favorites are in the story as well. There are some interesting developments with Cookie’s daughter, Amber. I am also enjoyed that the deva Osh is in the story a lot more as well.Things tie up at a good spot for the book. However, I am incredibly eager to see what happens next in the series.Overall this was an amazing continuation of this urban fantasy series. I love the new characters being introduced and am really enjoying seeing Charley discover her new and interesting powers. I would definitely recommend this series to those who enjoy lighter urban fantasy novels.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: Dark, yet fun and quirky urban fantasy series about a grim reaper. Charley balances several cases while newly pregnant.Opening Sentence: If the woman howling from the backseat of Agent Carson’s black SUV weren’t already dead, I would’ve strangled her.The Review:Charley Davidson keeps up her misadventures in the seventh installment of her urban fantasy series. A newly pregnant Charley has to undergo some significant changes in this book including going without her drink of choice, coffee. Seventh Grave and No Body has a lot going on and the story does jump all over the place much like Charley’s crazy personality.Charley is super excited about her pregnancy, which is still in the early stages. She isn’t quite as excited about the prospects of giving up her drink of choice: coffee. (Although a reasonable solution is quickly found.) Her pregnancy also doesn’t stop her from doing stupid things like putting herself in danger. She continues to solve crimes with the help of her ghost friends. In this installment, she is trying to solve several cases. The one for which the book is titled is a case that is quickly skimmed over so I was a little disappointed about how that one was wrapped up.Reyes is still as sexy as ever and when a woman’s attention gives Charley a case of jealousy she becomes even more reckless. Reyes wants to protect Charley from the Hellhounds that are after her but he can’t when she is constantly slipping away from him. Because of these series of events insecurities in their relationship are addressed.I feel like Seventh Grave and No Body has everything that I love and enjoy about the Urban Fantasy genre. It is another funny and quirky novel in the Charley Davidson series but some really serious events happen so you might not walk away from this one on a happy note. Even though this is a funny, clever series, I felt many emotions during the reading of this novel including frustration and sadness.I thought that Charley was all over the place in this novel. She had quite a few cases/events going on and it was a bit hard to keep track of what was what and who belonged with the different cases. I will say that I read book one and then skipped to this one. I think knowing the basis of the series really helped me out and I didn’t feel lost when reading book seven. Honestly, it makes me want to go back and read the rest, hopefully soon. Having said that, I did feel that this was a filler novel leading up to the major events that will happen in book eight, Eighth Grave After Dark. The side characters are just as hilarious and kooky as this series is and I really like the way Charley interacts with them. This series wouldn’t be what it is without these well thought out side characters.Overall, I devoured Seventh Grave and No Body in a quick amount of time. It did seem to be all over the place but I was still entertained by this read and I can’t wait to pick up the next one in the series.Notable Scene:“There are always loopholes, Reyes. I found one with you. You didn’t did like you were supposed to that day.”To say he was astonished would’ve been an understatement. He gazed at me, completely stunned, his eyes watering from the turbulence rocketing through him. “Then I should have died, and you risked your life needlessly.”“What did you just say?” I marched up to him, appalled he could even think such a thing.“You risked your life for me.” He took my shoulders into his hands. “When are you going to learn, Dutch: No one matters but you and the baby. You keep risking your life—“ He threw one hand out to indicate our surroundings. “—on things that are not the least bit important.” He stepped even closer. “On people who committed suicide and crazy chicks in cemeteries and—“ He stopped and dropped a heated gaze on me. His voice cracked when he said in a hushed tone, “I can’t lose you.”“And I can lose you?” I asked, almost screaming at him.He lowered his head and pinched the bridge of his nose with his thumb and index finger. Then he admitted what was probably his greatest fear. “I don’t know how to win. I don’t have the faintest idea of how to kill The Twelve. And when I saw your name on that wall.” His breath hitched in his chest. Then he focused his coffee-colored gaze on me. “If you die,” he said with a savage vehemence in his voice, “I will go straight to hell and kill every demon there. Or I’ll perish in the attempt.”Charley Davidson Series:FTC Advisory: I purchased my own copy of Seventh Grave and No Body. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

*Book source ~ LibraryThings are getting hairy. Not No-shav-ember hairy, but dangerous hairy. Charley Davidson, Private Investigator, consultant to the APD, fiancée to the son of Satan and grim reaper extraordinaire is having a bad week. But that’s nothing new for Charley. She’s used to things going to Hell in a hand basket around her, but that’s never stopped her from solving cases for clients, the police and the FBI. However, she’s never had the Twelve after her before. Talk about putting a crimp in her style. There’s a lot at stake, but nothing and no one stops Charley from helping people. Ohmygawd! I love this series so much! Each and every book is a delight with everything I love in a book: paranormal, steaminess, humor, mystery, intrigue, steaminess, excellent characters, terrific world and steaminess. I will say that Charley does frustrate me at times when it seems as if she’s being too stupid to live. However, it has finally dawned on me (it only took 7 books) that Charley is smarter than people give her credit, myself included. She doesn’t secretly have a death wish even it seems so at times and while she doesn’t always think things all the way through, she can think quickly and on the fly. Plus, she’s coming more and more into her powers and getting closer to figuring out what everything means. It helps that there’s more info about what the prophecy means. Man, Darynda Jones is so stingy with this information. I must have this information!Crimes are solved, people get hurt, people die, dead people show up, power gets thrown around, The Dealer is around a lot, the Twelve are badass, the mystery of Mr. Wong still hasn’t been answered, but Garrett’s paternity issue gets settled. So much goodness, so many feels! Wow! Now, the wait for book 8 begins. *taps foot impatiently*

Charley is back again and, as usual, she has lots of problems to deal with. As if being pregnant itself wasn’t hard enough, Charley also now has to deal with the ghost of her ex-BFF, Jessica, her father is missing, there’s a demon possessing a house and writing her name on the walls, there’s a new ghost who has a missing body, a new case with Ubie, and the twelve hellhounds who have been released to kill her, of course. I would lie down and die, but Charley takes it all in stride and does what she does best; getting into trouble, pissing off Reyes, and making the reader laugh all the way through.I loved Seventh Grave and No Body. I had high expectations for it and, I’m happy to say, it exceeded them. I love this series and it seems to only get better with each book. Charley’s wit was just as sharp and amusing as usual. You see a little more of a tender side of Reyes in Seventh Grave and I liked that. I almost cried at certain points when he talked about his feelings about Charley. I was a little worried about how Charley would be her usual self, now that she’s “knocked up”, as she put it, but to the utter frustration of Reyes, she’s exactly the same. She does have added protection this time in the form of “the dealer”, but she’s still a risk taker and just as headstrong as ever. The secondary characters continue to add their part to the story and are just as loveable as before. Cookie really helps out a lot in Seventh Grave, showing that she can be a pretty damn good investigator herself. As usual with this series, Seventh Grave is a wild ride with action around every corner and plenty of suspense that kept me turning the pages so quickly that I finished it in less than twenty-four hours. The only bad part now is having to wait for the next book, Eighth Grave After Dark, which is due to come out in May of 2015. I highly recommend Seventh Grave and No Body. You can read more of my reviews at bookwormbookreviews.com

Grim Reaper Charley Davidson is just a few weeks pregnant and having a difficult time with caffeine withdrawal. She’s also having a difficult time doing her investigative work while her fiancé, Reyes Farrow who just happens to be the son of Satan, absolutely doesn’t want her going anywhere without him while twelve hellhounds are out there waiting to kill her. As usual, outside of her investigative work, Charley has a difficult time taking anything seriously. Her uncle Bob asks her to help out the police department with a serious of apparent suicides. Apparent because notes were left and they suspiciously sound the same, but there are no bodies. A couple of other things are also worth investigating. And while battling demons and hellhounds with the help of Reyes, the Dealer and Garrett, she finally starts to get a handle on just what she is and what she can do. The problem is, someone else is noticing.Humor throughout, plenty of action and some emotion. We’re left with a number of things yet to be dealt with and I expect a couple of those to be huge and can’t wait for the next release. I enjoy the characters, Charley’s constant wit and the things she gets involved in. Poor Reyes, got to love a sexy man who puts up with everything he does.

I'm always really impatient and excited to get my greedy little hands on the next Charley Davidson book, so when my request for a review copy was granted I did a little happy dance and stalked my mailbox until my pretty new book arrived in the mail.We were hit with some major news at the end of SIXTH GRAVE ON THE EDGE. Thankfully we don't have to wait long to learn more about that news in SEVENTH GRAVE AND NO BODY. It was interesting to witness all the feelings that the news brought out from not only Charley, but also Reyes and their friends/allies. I was a little curious how everyone would protect her now and if she would LET them and was glad to see this was addressed quite a few times throughout the book and especially at the end.As with all the other books in this series some heavy stuff happens in SEVENTH GRAVE. I'm an emotional reader and it always seems to surprise me how easily I can go from laughing to crying with books in this series. Each book has brought out both in me and SEVENTH GRAVE is no exception. The book ends on a pretty heavy moment that left me with a box of kleenox, a "NO, it can't end like that" coming out of my mouth and lots of open strings to bring us into book 8.Let's talk about the humor. LMAO is what I do for a good portion of each book. Charley is super snarky and finds a way to make a smart ass comment at every turn. She also happens to name EVERYTHING no matter how inappropriate it is, which happens to be hilarious. Each chapter starts off with a t-shirt quote, or funny saying. Not sure where Darynda finds all of these, but I would definitely buy and wear most of them. So, if our looking for some humor with your action, hot romance and emotional roller coaster this series is for you!I find it really hard to write reviews for books in long series because I usually have already said everything about the characters or the writing and world in previous reviews so I will leave my review at that. SEVENTH GRAVE AND NO BODY was another fantastic addition with another ending that left me salivating for more. Darynda Jones will continue to have a prominent spot on my bookshelf.* This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Reviewed by: Rabid Reads.*** Review may contain spoilers for previous installments in series. ***Charley Davidson is back for her seventh round of cray-cray situations, murder n' mayhem, and grim reaper pandemonium, only this time her snark is the sole weapon in her arsenal because she has to do it all sans caffeine. Fortunately for her, she has a strong crew of secondary characters at her back, and in this installment she's going to need every single one of them! This audiobook was emotionally taxing; I went from laughing out loud at the heroine's lunacy, to weeping with joy about that THING we've all been waiting for, to blubbering over the death of one of their own. But, this novel wasn't just about the feels because it also featured mucho plot threads, wonderful epiphanies, and made some pretty significant mythology headway. The overall experience was rendered even more perfect with the delightful Lorelei King at the narrative reins. I like listening to these books because they are light, fun, and typically don't require much thought—ear candy at its best! SEVENTH GRAVE AND NO BODY changed all of that because every chapter, while entertaining, was also crucial to this series' overall story arc. Charley solved a ten year old case in fifteen minutes, and even though that initial plot thread was quickly overshadowed by several others, it was still super important because it was related to the twelve, and pulled agent Carlson into Davidson's inner circle. Then, the priest's minor haunting episode brought Heaven and Hell to the fore by introducing the Vatican and bounty hunter angles. And finally, don't even get me started on the suicide kidnappings and Silvia Star! There were a lot of seemingly unrelated incidents in this installment, however upon closer inspection every single one was part of the bigger picture. Genius!Charley never fails to crack me up with her t-shirt sayings, eccentric naming habits, and outlandish sense of humour. Her lack of progression as a character used to frustrate me, but the evolution of her abilities, and that of her sidekicks more than make up for her shortcomings in that area. Cookie was as terrific as always, and it appears as though her daughter, Amber, will play a pivotal role in this story as well. Reyes isn't quite as evil as he used to be, but both Charley and The Dealer definitely kept him on his toes. I actually got a kick out of Swopes for once, and even Ubie managed to surprise me. There were unfortunately two deaths in this installment; Belvedere's which was a given (haha!), and one other that broke my heart. Darynda Jone's writing style is without a doubt addictive; however it's Lorelei King's voice that keeps me coming back for more. She adds a whole new level to Charley with her saucy tone, and uncanny ability to switch from silly to serious in the same breath. I gave this audiobook five stars, but it should be noted that the narrator earned at least one of them all by herself thanks to her A+ delivery. It takes longer to listen than it does to read, yet with King in your ear those extra hours feel like a gift instead of a burden. This novel was one of the most suspenseful in this series to date, and that aspect really came through in Lorelei's performance via her character voices, and the high impact action scenes. SEVENTH GRAVE AND NO BODY was audiobook magic, plain and simple!
