I enjoyed this one. It's a series of interconnected short stories about mankind's fight against supremely powerful ancient machines with only one purpose: to destroy all life in the universe. Despite the relatively cliche premise, the stories are interesting and decidedly different from many war-in-space tales. I doubt I'll search out the rest of the series, but I would recommend this one to fans of hard SF.

A mercifully quick read. I liked the vignette style of storytelling which interspersed the main storyline with more fanciful stories in between. The Peacemaker was my favorite story of the lot.

This book is several cohesive short stories that chronicle some of humanity's fight against the ancient and mysterious war machines known as Berserkers. Saberhagen describes interactions between the Berserkers and different aspects of humanity embodied in individuals; warriors, artists, criminals, and civilians are all given a chance to plead their case to the cold metal constructs, whether by design or accident. A theme of redemption is established, even when those who may hold the key to salvation are hardly the best representatives of mankind.

Berserker is a described as a history of humanity's fight against the rogue machines known as berserkers. In the book, each vignette is described as having been acquired from the mind of the person central to the story. We see, in several episodes, how humanity's persistence and adapability (and in many cases, dumb luck) have been able to keep the berserkers from eradicating all life in the galaxy.I thought that the vignette style worked well for this book - allowing us to quickly experience the berserker's weaknesses as found and exploited by both the major players (Karlsen, Hemphill) and by the bitplayers (Goodlife, Jester).

Amazing! Extremely well done and great voices. Read WHILE you listen for the best experience of all. Saberhagen is an excellent writer. Many twists and turns and great language. The Berserkers are horrifying and their threat is WAY bigger than any 'terminator' style robot. Chilling, heroic, thrilling, epic, and awe-inspiring. Highly recommended.

The first collection of stories in this series about humans versus machines bent on destroying all life in the Universe. I found it readable but not memorable and I don't think I'll make any special effort to read the dozen or so other books featuring the Beserkers.
