About this audiobook

Krysta is used to getting the drop on vampires. Her "special abilities" aren't much, but the plan is simple-she plays helpless pretty young thing to lure them in. Then her shoto swords come out and it's bye-bye, bloodsucker. Until one night she finds herself with an unexpected ally. He's a vampire, all right, but different. Mysterious. Handsome. And more interested in saving her skin than draining it.

Etienne has been an Immortal Guardian for two hundred years-long enough to know that Krysta is special. He can't stop thinking about her long legs, even more than her short swords. Then he discovers the vamps she's exterminating have friends in high places, and the Guardians are in danger, too. He'll have to accept Krysta's help to save them. The stakes for a mortal are high. But the cost to his heart might be higher . . .

Darkness Rises is the fourth book in the Immortal Guardians series, and if you haven't started this series yet you are really missing out. In fact, this series has quickly become one of my new favorites. Dianne Duvall has a very engaging style of writing and I always fly right through her books and can't wait to read more when I'm finished. Her books never disappoint me!

This book is Etienne and Krysta's story and it was really good. Although we've read a bit about Etienne in previous books, Krysta is new to this series. She is a gifted one that has been fighting vampires using her special ability (and hers is one that is pretty cool) along with her gifted brother in order to rid the streets of all vampires. Until this point she has been doing exceedingly well considering she doesn't have the immortal guardian's strength and speed, but the increase in vampires in the area recently has started to take it's toll and that is how Etienne finds her.

With Krysta's lack of knowledge of immortal guardians she initially thinks Etienne is also a vampire, so their relationship starts out rocky. Along with their story we find out more about the other characters from the previous books, so fans of the series will love finding out what their favorite characters have been up to. Personally I can't wait to find out more about Zach and the origins of Seth and the rest of the immortals, I've got ideas but I can't wait to see how much I've got right.

Although you could probably read this book as a standalone and understand basically what's going on, do yourself a favor and start at the beginning of this series because it is so worth it. There are bigger story lines going on than what you could grasp with just this one book. I've given every book in this series at least a four, if not a five, star review and they are all worth the time to read them!

*Book source ~ Many thanks to Kensington for providing a review copy in exchange for an honest review.Étienne d’Alençon is an Immortal Guardian. Tasked with protecting humans from vampires, he and his siblings, along with other Immortal Guardians, hunt each night, but no matter how many vampires they take out more seem to fill the void. One night while on patrol Étienne comes across Krysta Linz, a human vampire hunter. Even though she has some serious mad fighting skillz he decides to follow her each evening and protect her. Until one evening when she finds herself seriously outnumbered by vampires and things spiral out of control. The threat that was thought to be eliminated is still going strong and the Immortal Guardians are once more fighting more than vampires.I wondered what would happen when the big baddies were put down, what or who would the Immortal Guardians deal with now? Vampires aren’t much of a threat to them though they are annoying to keep in check, preventing them from hurting or killing humans. Well, I didn’t need to worry because this book reveals something else is going on. And it’s a doozy.I love, love, love this series. Every book is a smorgasbord of everything I like about books all under one cover. The paranormal elements, fast action, kicking ass, humor, hot nommy guys, excellent dialogue, fantastic characters, bad baddies, steamy scenes and I mentioned the hot nommy guys, right? I know when I pick up an Immortal Guardians story I won’t be able to put it down.I have to admit that part of my delight in this book as well as the others in this series is the fact that the setting is right down the road from where I live. I love seeing familiar cities and landmarks mentioned since I don’t think I’ve read a book yet that has a setting so close to home. In addition, Étienne turned about to be more laid back than the other Guardians I’ve met so far, so it was a nice change of pace. When the French siblings were first introduced in the series I wasn’t sure if I would like them, but after Richart’s & Étienne’s stories were told they have earned a place in my heart. Krysta is a great character, too. Strong, stubborn and very loyal to those she loves. She took a horrible experience and turned it into a crusade that luckily didn’t get her killed. I also love meeting more humans who are gifted ones and learning what type of gift they have. There are a few more Immortal Guardians mentioned in this book as well as their Seconds, Ami’s secrets are revealed to the Guardians and then there’s Zach. Oh, boy. I’m seriously hoping his story is next though Seth’s story would be super awesome. I can’t wait to read more about the Immortal Guardians and I’m very much looking forward to Night Unbound due out September 2, 2014.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: A vampire hunter finds out that the paranormal world isn’t quite as cut and dry as she thought it was when an immortal enters her life. The world she thought she knew will be forever changed because of him.Opening Sentence: Étienne stared down at the house across the street and watched shadows writhe and dance on the closed curtains. The Review:I’ve had the first book in the Immortal Guardians series on my to read list for quite a while, so I was intrigued when I saw book 4 in my list of books to review and hoped that I wouldn’t be too lost, having not read the first three. This book easily stood on its own, causing me very little confusion as to what was happening in the overall storyline. That being said, while I was entertained, I found the book to be largely average.Six years ago, Krysta was attacked and found out the hard way that vampires exist in our world. Ever since that night, she has gone out hunting vampires, making herself look like an easy target on college campuses, luring vampires into alleys and then killing them. Krysta has the ability to see auras, and vampires’ auras move before they do, giving Krysta an edge in a fight. Her brother Sean has the ability to heal, taking any injury from one person onto himself, so Krysta is able to keep going out and fighting. One night, she finds herself surrounded by more vamps than she’s ever faced before. When things start to go bad, she’s saved by Étienne, an Immortal Guardian. Thus begins Krysta and Sean’s initiation into a world filled not only with vampires, but also with immortal beings tasked with slaying all vampires and keeping the human population safe, as well as their Seconds, gifted humans like Krysta and Sean who aid the Immortal Guardians in their quest. Vampires are not the only threat, however. A group of mercenaries armed with tranquilizer darts are determined to capture an Immortal Guardian for purposes of experimentation. Will the Immortal Guardians be able to find their base and eradicate the threat?I really liked Krysta as a heroine. She’s strong and able to take care of herself, but she is also aware of her limitations. She is constantly worried that one day, she’ll be injured so severely that Sean will die healing her. Seeing her struggle with that knowledge while still wanting to make the world a safer place without vampires really helped me feel a connection to her as a character and admire the way she puts herself out there despite the danger to herself.Étienne, in contrast, seemed like a really flat character to me. Despite the fact that there are multiple parts of the book from his point of view, I never really got a good feel for him as a person. We get very little back story on his life, and then once he meets Krysta, most of his thoughts are consumed with her, so I never really had a chance to connect with him.Regarding the story overall, a big problem I had was that parts of the world didn’t seem that original to me. For instance, the ability of the Guardians’ fangs to be able to carry blood directly to their system is something I’ve read in a different series, and I would constantly think of that series every time this book would mention it. I’ve also seen the idea of the Seconds done before. I will say though, that I really liked the idea of vampirism being caused by a virus that slowly drives the infected person insane. That seemed very original to me and kept me reading. I’m very intrigued to see if they’re ever able to figure out a way to stop the progression of the insanity. There were also some great funny moments throughout the book, especially when the entire group of guardians would gather together. The humor was a great way to take a break from the action scenes. All in all, I’m rather torn about this book. I enjoyed it and was entertained by it, but at the same time, parts of it seemed very unoriginal to me, which hampered my enjoyment. I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to try and go back and read the first three books in the series. If I do decide to continue, it will probably be awhile before I pick up one of the books.Notable Scene:“What’s your point?” Ethan asked.“My point is I can’t protect you if you keep your girlfriends from me.”Every eye swung toward Krysta. She glanced around. “Why is everyone looking at me?”Silence.“Oh. Oh, no. I’m not Étienne’s girlfriend. We just…hunt together…sort of. It’s not like we’re dating or…We haven’t slept together or anything…I mean we slept together…twice actually…but we didn’t—““You aren’t helping,” Étienne murmured.FTC Advisory: Zebra/Kensington provided me with a copy of Darkness Rises. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

Read from October 26 to 27, 2013Listened for Fun/Read for Review (Audible/Edelweiss)Overall Rating: 4.50Story Rating: 4.25Character Rating: 4.75Audio Rating: 4.50 (not part of the overall rating)First Thought when Finished: Darkness Rises is my favorite in the series so far!Story Thoughts: I want to start by saying that I have been WAITING for Darkness Rises for a LONG time! Pretty much the second I finished Phantom Shadows I was chomping at the bit to get a hold of this book. I was not disappointed. I was surprised how much I loved the direction that Darkness Rises took the Immortal Guardians. It seem the situation is changing and our guardians are having to adjust. Plus the more special humans that join the ranks the better. I really liked the mix of action and romance in this one too. Krysta and Etienne had an amazing connection!Character Thoughts: LOVED Krysta! I really thought in the beginning she was going to be to "off-putting" but after learning her back story, it just fit. She was strong and was really good at what she does. Etienne has always been fantastic! It was nice to get a whole book for him. I loved seeing all the other Guardians/Wives/Seconds we have come to love. Specifically little sister and angel boy! I can't wait to see where that goes :)Audio Thoughts: Narrated By Kirsten Potter / Length: 11 hrs and 39 mins I love Kirsten! She is one of my favorite narrators. Her pacing, timing, and emotions are always pretty spot-on with the characters of the Immortal Guardians. Heck, I even had this book to read and chose to listen to it.Final Thoughts: When is the next one? *sigh*

I'm always scared to read the next book in this series because I can't imagine any new couple being as compelling and full of chemistry as the last, but Dianne Duvall makes me eat my words while drawing me in for more.Krysta instantly draws your attention as she acts her way into a confrontation with some vamps she is eager to cut to pieces. All the woman in the Immortal Guardians series are kick-ass so you know that Krysta could be no different but she takes it a bit farther by being a vampire hunter on her own and being able to stay alive as long as she has. With Krysta we also meet her brother who happens to have the gift as a healer and takes care of her when she comes home from hunting for the night. When Etienne shows up saving her from a vampire situation that gets a little hairy she has no idea what to think, she knows he is vampire but he doesn't act like the other vampires and his aura color is all wrong. We know a bit about Etienne from the past books but we get to know him better in DARKNESS RISES. He notices Krysta and can not get her off his mind. He follows her and protects her when she finds herself biting of more than she can chew. They both fall hard and fast for each other and develop as a couple as swiftly as the others. Besides following the newest couple we learn a bit more about the other immortals. The coolest information is that we get a glimpse of what makes Seth and David who they are!I absolutely love that all the characters are involved in each installment in the series. We get to meet the new couple, watch them develop, and still watch the others develop even more than they already have. They all come together to make each chapter full of action, entertainment, and engaging plot. The overall story that ties each book together continues to develop and twist as the Immortal Guardians stories continue. You do not want to miss this series and you wont want to put it down once you start. Pick up the first book if it's new to you and don't hesitate adding DARKNESS RISES to your book collection if you have not already!

I can't get enough of this series. The men are hot alpha- type vampires, but they definitely know when a woman is strong enough to deal with them and put them in their place. I liked that Krysta was strong and capable before meeting Etienne but transformed into a better warrior with him by her side. It was nice to see Etienne get a HEA after him seeing his twin brother find love. Now, if we could just get his stubborn sister to drop the guilt long enough to see who's in front of her. There are so many characters that I can't wait to read their stories. Recommend this book and series to anyone who loves the paranormal romance genre. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Reviewed by: Rabid ReadsI’ve been waiting for another 5-star read from Dianne Duvall ever since I fell head-over-heels in love with Darkness Dawns two years ago. As entertaining as the last few installments have been; they’ve all failed to measure up to Roland’s story, until now. Étienne may not have succeeded in surpassing Warbrook as my favourite Immortal Guardian but Darkness Rises delivers a well-rounded tale that’s sure to satisfy long-time fans of this series. In this installment, readers get to learn some interesting new tidbits about Duvall’s vampires. We discover how the d’Alençon siblings became Immortals and it’s not a pretty tale but I enjoyed reading about it all the same. A few clues about Seth and David’s origins also get dropped and now I’m more curious than ever about their ancestry. I always get a kick out of how environmentally conscious the Immortal Guardians are. I’m surprised that more authors don’t pick-up on what having enhanced senses really means for their characters. There has to be a few downsides to being undead, right? In this case it’s being able to smell the pollution in the air, taste the additives in food and remember what the world was like before the industrial revolution. I love it when an author fully immerses themselves inside of their fictional world!I found that this book focused more on the overall story arc of this series than on a specific couple like in previous installments which made this novel feel more like Urban Fantasy than Paranormal Romance. That’s not to say that Étienne and Krysta don’t have their moments in the spotlight, because they do, but I also really enjoyed unraveling the multiple plot threads. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book in one sitting but as soon as I opened Darkness Rises there was just no stopping! Duvall also does a great job of setting up the next installment by dropping hints as to which couple will be featured next. *Hint* Only one of the d’Alençon’s tales remains to be told!Krista was a nice change of pace from the previous female heroines featured in this series. She’s already a vampire hunter which made her transition into the Immortal Guardians world a smooth one. I like how this book’s protagonist starts this story off as a fighter rather than as a victim needing to be saved. I thought her ability was well thought out and helped make her knack for kicking vamp butt more credible because, let’s face it, normal humans wouldn’t stand a chance. I’ve had a mini-crush on Étienne for a while now (ssh, don’t tell Roland!) and I loved how patient and understanding he was of Krista. Alençon is afraid that her dangerous profession might one day get her killed but doesn’t push her into giving it up, instead he compromises. This is as healthy as paranormal relationships get!The latest installment in Dianne Duvall’s Immortal Guardians series is not to be missed with its complex plot, memorable Roland quotes and high entertainment factor. I loved Darkness Rises from beginning to end!
