Fifth-grade sleuth Cam Jansen returns in this thirtieth chapter-book devoted to her ongoing crime-solving adventures. When she and her father and friends head to their local senior center to put on a talent show for the members, Cam soon finds herself involved in another mystery. Ken, the baker who supplied the refreshments for the show, discovers that someone has stolen a wedding cake and other baked goods from his truck. With just three hours to the wedding, can Cam and her friends find the thief and retrieve the cake...?I have fond memories of reading some of the early entries in David A. Adler's long-running Cam Jansen series when I was in grade school, back in the 1980s. Interested in familiarizing myself with the literature available to the beginning chapter-book audience, I returned to the series this past year (2020) as part of a reading project, and have slowly been making my way through them. I find that the later entries in the series are somewhat less engaging than the earlier titles, which could be partially owing to nostalgia - after all, I recall enjoying the early entries when I was a girl - but which is also no doubt due to the fact that the mysteries have become more obvious, because of the formula Adler employs. I knew who the guilty party was on page three of Cam Jansen and the Wedding Cake Mystery, and I didn't find the process whereby Cam came to the same conclusion particularly involving. Having said that, I am not the target audience, and suspect that young readers will find this mystery more mysterious than I did. Recommended to fans of the Cam Jansen books, and to beginning chapter-book readers who enjoy mystery stories.
