About this audiobook

Sometimes I wonder if the purpose of my life
is to serve as a cautionary tale to others.

Charley Davidson has enough going on without having to worry about twelve hellhounds hot on her trail. She is, after all, incredibly pregnant and feeling like she could pop at any moment. But, just her luck, twelve deadly beasts from hell have chosen this time to escape onto our plane, and they've made Charley their target. And so she takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can't get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. Of course, if hellhounds aren't enough, Charley also has a new case to hold her attention: the decades-old murder of a newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows of the convent.
Add to that the still unsolved murder of her father, the strange behavior of her husband, and Charley's tendency to attract the, shall we say, undead, and she has her hands full…but also tied. While the angry hellhounds can't traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders like evil sentries, so Charley has been forbidden from leaving the sacred grounds. Luckily, she has her loyal team with her, and they're a scrappy bunch who won't let a few thirsty hellhounds deter them.

While the team scours the prophesies, searching for clues on the Twelve, for a way to kill them or at least send them back to hell, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they've accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. Their presence is comforting. But the good feelings don't last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….

I do like these books very much! I love the quirky way Charlie names everything, I do that as well, haha. I enjoy her family ties and how she falls on her face but manages to come out on tip anyway. I would like to see some character growth tho. Charlie puts alot of stress on her loved ones because she doesn't head their warnings pr even attempt to emphasize with them when she puts herself in danger in the most irresponsible ways. Hopefully Charlie will learn alot as a mother and realize the pressure she puts on her husband and the father of her baby. Thanks for the awesome books! Can't wait tp read the next one.

This book had the usual Charley Davidson humor but lacked the multiple, & I mean multiple, chaotic events that usually has Charley being pulled in different directions. This story showed more of the "nesting" side of Reyes instead of his typical bada$$ness. I was surprised at Charley's persistent recklessness when pregnant and shortly after giving birth. I expected her maternal protective instincts to be present, but they were lacking in crucial points. Bits of the story just did not fit as well together with the rest of the series and were a little hard to swallow...specifically about Charley's god position & memory loss. I still really like the series and plan to continue to read new books as they come out.

This story was different from all the rest. Charley and Reyes are on lockdown but that minor detail does little to hamper Charley's investigative efforts. Reyes is strung out with worry and that leads to nothing good. Yay on the Cookie and Ubie front! I am curious where this series is going with Amber's possible clairvoyance abilities. Finally we understand Mr. Wong's role is in this story. And dang on Denise, I did not see that coming and it actually made me sad a bit. The ending was not your typical ending for this series and it has me biting my nails in anticipation. Another Great Read!!

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: Eighth Grave After Dark has a totally different feel than the rest of the series. Be prepared for a much more subdued Charley, a serious cliffhanger, and the answer to most of your questions about Charley.Opening Sentence: There was a dead tax attorney in my closet, sobbing uncontrollably into the hem of her blouse. The Review:Eighth Grave After Dark is completely different from the rest of the Charley Davidson series. Charley isn’t running around solving eighteen crimes at once. She is much more subdued than usual, she is still the jokester but she isn’t quite her usual self. This arc of Charley’s story ends with a major cliffhanger. Do not read this rest of this review if you don’t want any spoilers from this series.Hellhounds are after Charley, forcing her to take sanctuary on sacred ground. For the past eight months or so, Charley and Reyes have been living at an old abandoned church in New Mexico while Charley is incubating (her words, not mine). Life hasn’t been completely boring for Charley, Reyes is stuck there with her after all. Her ghosts have followed her to the church, including Rocket and Mr. Wong; a lawn full of ghosts and two mysterious female ghosts. Charley has taken to following one of the ghosts, she leads her close to the boundaries of the church before she disappears.Charley’s friends don’t have to abide by the sacred ground rule. They are able to come and go as they please. Cookie and Uncle Bob are planning to have their wedding at the church giving Charley some more excitement before Beep is born.Reyes and Angel are being really secretive. Garrett is still trying to figure out how to defeat Lucifer. Osh is just Osh, waiting for Charley to damn some souls so he can eat and refusing to give in to Charley’s demands to know her name.Eighth Grave After Dark did have a slower pace than usual too. I didn’t find it very off putting since I really wanted to know what was going to happen with Beep. I was surprised by how far into the book that the birth happened but this was a much shorter book in the series. It was a really quick read for me. I was a bit surprised by the ending of this arc of Charley’s life.I said earlier that I think Charley is more subdued. I don’t know if that is because of her impending motherhood or just being stuck in a church for months on end. She does do a couple of really funny practical jokes but most of the sarcastic wit is not there.I was a little sad about this ending. I was kind of hoping that Charley’s judge of character was off, but nope. Then Charley being left in the cold was a bummer. I’m glad I don’t have to wait long to read book nine.Notable Scene:“The first time we had sex,” I said, making Reyes a little uncomfortable and Osh perk up, “I saw you see me.” I looked at him. “I saw you pick me out of a thousand light beings. They were all just like me.”“They were not all just like you. To give you a metaphor of what your dimension is like, imagine if God, the god of this dimension, walked among humans as one of them. He would not be one of them. He would have the power to reduce them all to ash with a single thought, but he still walked among you.”“Like that song by Joan Osborne.”“Pretty much. Now again, you have to understand, all of this too millions of years. Probably billions. The gods of your dimension are more ancient than any other beings I’ve ever seen or heard about.”“So, while you are centuries old, I’m actually millions?”He grinned. “Yes.”“I totally robbed the cradle.”FTC Advisory: St. Martin’s Press/Macmillan provided me with a copy of Eighth Grave After Dark. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

I really enjoy this series, but for some reason this book felt shorter than the others. I just checked and the listening time is about the same as the previous 7, plus or minus an hour, so I'm not sure what that means!

I had somehow thought this was going to be the last book in the series, but towards the end I realized that Jones was setting up a much larger story to come, so I'm looking forward to going on more journeys with Charley!

Charley Davidson, our favorite grim reaper, is very pregnant and stuck on consecrated ground since twelve hellhounds would like nothing better than to tear her, and her unborn daughter, Beep, apart to stop a very old prophecy from coming to fruition. Needless to say, this is driving her crazy since she isn't used to being confined anywhere, at any time, and without coffee nonetheless! Luckily she has Cookie and Ubie's wedding to distract her, or you would think. If the PI can't go to the cases, the cases will come to the PI, so to speak. I enjoyed this installment in the Charley Davidson series, but I think I like it better when Charley can get out and about and in trouble, truth be told. That being said, a lot of questions were answered, and I loved that. All in all, I liked way more about the book than I didn't, and I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series to see where we will go next!4/5 stars.

I knew (sort of) how this one ended and had put off starting it until the release of the ninth book was closer, but actually it's not quite as cliff-hanging an ending as I was expecting. I love this series; I love the humour, the snark, and the inclusion of a lot of old Christian mythology. I like the way the author conveys the horror of bad things happening without making the reader wallow in it. Eighth Grave After Dark is both the culmination and the deepening of the overall story arc. We have the ultimate family reunion in addition to the cold and hot cases Charley is trying to solve. Reyes becomes a bit more human too, if you'll excuse the expression. The author's depiction of hell brought to mind scenes from Constantine and were incredibly effective. The ending is ... ok. It's a neat and tidy way of getting around what might have proven problematic in future plots, but it works for me. I'm very much looking forward to the ninth book.

I keep saying this every review of this series but this is even better then the books that came before it. This one is almost completely centered on the series story line, along with a few side stories. While reading it
I thought the wedding was too drawn out at the 1st 20 % of the book, but at about the halfway point I understood that this was going to be a pretty intense story and needed that gentle introduction.

I can't wait to see where the stories goes from here.

    Eighth Grave After Dark
    4 Stars

Sidelined in an abandoned convent for the duration of her pregnancy, Charley Davidson is going stir crazy while her husband, the sexy son of Satan, Reyes, also seems to be out of sorts. Luckily, Charley is keeping herself busy with Cookie's wedding, the disappearance of a teenage girl and the murder of a newly avowed nun.

The first few books in this series are incredible - an original premise, a snarky lovable heroine and a steamy romance. Unfortunately, the last couple of installments seem to have lost momentum and there has been little to no progression in the overall story arc.

At first, Eighth Grave appears to be more of the same with a rather bland missing person's investigation that Charley solves long distance and a more local mystery that is woefully underdeveloped.

However, things change at the halfway point as the threads from earlier books ultimately begin coming together and answers are finally provided for the numerous unresolved issues, such as an explanation of the 12 sent and 12 summoned prophecies, the exact nature of Charley's origins and the revelation of Lucifer's plan for Reyes and Beep.

All in all, the story ends on a high note with a life altering cliffhanger and I'm really glad that the next few books are already available as waiting a year for the next one would be hell!

I am a fan of this series. Charley and Reyes will always be one of my favorite couples. There could not be a more perfect match. Yet, I would be amiss if I did not mention everyone else as well. They are what help to make this series great. Ok, I am not going to say that Charley's pregnancy slowed her down but it seemed to bring her sassy wit down. I found that lacking the most in this book. She was not the only one that seemed to be muted; Reyes was docile as well. There just was not a lot of things happening in the book and with the lack of sarcasm the book was just alright. Although, I am intrigued to get to know more about Beep. Still a fan though.

This is the eighth book in the Charley Davidson series and was a wonderful continuation of this series. These books just keep getting better and better. This book takes place quite some time after the seventh book ends. Charley and Reyes have been holed up on holy ground at an abandoned convent for 8 months or so; Charley is pretty close to term on her pregnancy.A lot happens in this book. We learn more about Reyes’ birth family and a lot more about Charley and her powers. Charley’s friends have become a force in their own right and support her, standing by her side like her own personal army. More is revealed about Lucifer; his army and spies are lurking close to Charley.Charley goes through some amazing and painful changes in this book. She gains incredibly power and undergoes some insane emotional torment as well. The book ends on quite a cliffhanger and I am dying to know what happens next. There is a lot of mystery, action, and humor in the story as well. I will say that this book is much more focused on the whole Charley vs. Lucifer storyline than ghostly mysteries. Additionally this book is much more serious than previous ones.Overall this was an amazing continuation of this series and the story and the characters all have some amazing developments. I am incredibly curious to see what happens in the next book and can’t wait to read it. I would recommend to those who enjoy light-hearted urban fantasy mysteries.

Loved the majority of the book. Charlie and the chapter intro's continued to be exactly why I love the series. There was finally some aspects that finally were revealed (Mr Wong) and more details about Charlie's powers.

The secondary story lines mysteries involving the nun and little girl missing were almost insignificant. By the end of the book I almost forgot about the nun story line.

    Then there's the ending..
It switched from Charlie's POV to Reyes so I'm hoping that was part of the disconnect from the rest of the book. I won't do spoilers in this review but the setup for the next book is definitely there.

I would have been happier if this book ended without the last few chapters. I went from 'that was awesome' to 'WTF just happened'!?! That's when it went from 5 stars to 4 - it's that odd. Potential is there for the next book I just hope the storyline doesn't go backwards.

Well what could be better than a pregnant Charley and being cooped up for several month on sacred ground? Well read this addition to the series to find the exciting twists and turns and the blindsiding twist of the plots as they thicken and become more complex!! You will never see what's coming, but so worth the ride! Hell hounds couldn't drag me away!!

I am an ender and that end did not work for me. It introduced two troupes that I don't care for at all (won't give them away). That being said, the mystery was fun in this one. I loved getting to know more about certain characters. I liked the character arcs of some others coming more into the light. I loved the humor. I loved COOKIE (ok I always love Cookie but that is besides the point). In other words, I still really enjoyed listening to the book but I wanted to throw it across the room when done. *Book source ~ LibraryCharley Davidson is the reaper, but she prefers to ignore the grim part. With 12 hellhounds on her tail she and her hunky husband, Reyes, aka son of Satan, take refuge in a convent while Charley incubates the spawn of their union. Um, I mean, their daughter, temporarily named Beep who, according to prophecy, is destined to destroy Lucifer, her grandfather. But Lucifer isn’t sitting around waiting for his doom at dainty hands. He has plan after contingency plan at the ready and with centuries to plot he’s confident he’ll prevail. But Charley is unpredictable. And not technically human. So who will win?Oh.Em.Gee!! Twistier and twistier does this tail become the further it goes. What the hell?! Just when I think I have a handle on the plot it veers off into left field. Or right field. Or straight over the fence and out of the damn park! Full of the trademark humor, mystery and snappy dialogue typical of this series, this book continues to vastly entertain. I knew once I cracked it open I wouldn’t be able to stop until I finished the last page. And I was right. Except for a few essential events that required me to put it down (driving, for one) I read it straight through to the end. And what an end it is! I’ll say again…what the hell?! When is the next book due out?! Because, damn!

Charley Davidson, a PI and The Grim Reaper, and her husband Reyes, the son of Satan, are taking refuge in an old convent while waiting for the birth of their daughter, Beep who is prophesized to topple Lucifer. They’ve been stuck on the consecrated grounds for the past eight months to stay safe from the twelve hellhounds that are just waiting for them to step beyond the property’s protection. The entire gang is on hand during this time as they pour through old manuscripts, trying to find information on the prophecies and how to kill a hellhound. Oh, and the wedding of Cookie and Uncle Bob. We do get one new mystery about a teenage girl that has gone missing. It might be a good idea to reread the series prior to this book as a lot of things come to a head in this story and references are made to prior events that happened to everyone close to Charley. You don’t need to, but I know I’ll be going back and rereading. We get long-awaited answers to a number of things as well as a twist near the end that appears to change the focus of the next book. And as always a great deal of humor along with new revelations.I love the humor as well as the regular characters, the situations and how different investigations are handled. I also find it cool that the sexual tension is still there, even though Charley is eight months pregnant. Nothing is going to stop this woman. In my opinion, one of the best books in the series.

I find myself wide awake at 3 am after finishing reading my copy. It was an amazing book from start to finish. I figured I was accustomed to Darynda's writing and knew where things would go, or rather how she would tackle them. Man did she totally throw to left field with the ending. It is like jumping into a new series but with characters we love! This installment really cleared up some story lines and answered some long time questions. In past reviews others have written they didn't like all the detective work on the sides or Charley putting herself in danger, but I really like that part about her. It's who she is and why we love her. She doesn't always act her age but with a messed up life like hers who would? This series is amazing. Thank you for a wonderful ride Ms Jones!

Devastated.. I am absolutely devastated that I will have to wait so long for book 9.My emotions are up and down after reading EIGHTH GRAVE AFTER DARK and I am having a real hard time writing this review because to tell you why they are all over the place, I would have to give away spoilers, and I really don't want to do that. SO, please know that I will try to make as much sense as possible without spoiling anything, but somethings you might not get until you read the book. EIGHTH GRAVE AFTER DARK was a bit slower than previous books in the series, but it was still an essential addition to the series. There are a lot of surprises and answers revealed. We get to witness Charley at the end of her pregnancy and the birth of Beep. All of our favorite and not so favorite characters are present and involved in different ways. I wish Charley and Reyes would finally trust each other. They have the love down, but they continue to hide things and get the other upset on a regular basis. The pre-ending was the part of the book that left my emotions all over the place. In hindsight I know the events that took place were necessary, but as a mother I HATE when books do this. HATE it. It usually tends to ruin them for me, but I love this series so much I can't not read them anymore so I have to try and look past it and hope that it doesn't last long, because I just won't be able to take it if it does. NOW the events that took place AFTER the pre-ending, UGGH NOOOOO, not a total cliffhanger, but close enough. Ok I will stop confusing you now. THE DIRT ON NINTH GRAVE has a release date of January 5, 2016 and that seems so far away.* This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Reviewed by: Rabid Reads. This was the first time that I’ve read a CHARLEY DAVIDSON novel, so I was a little worried that the story just wouldn’t be the same without Lorelei King’s narration, and yes I did miss her sultry voice (audiobook’s been pre-ordered!), but I regret nothing. EIGHTH GRAVE AFTER DARK was the installment that I’ve been craving since Darynda Jones began laying her trail of breadcrumbs in FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT. We get answers to oh so many questions, to the point that I’ll be hitting play on my iPhone the moment it shows up because one pass wasn’t nearly enough.Lately this series has been on my ‘easy listening’ playlist thanks to it’s snarky humour, scorching romance, and the fact that it’s, for the most part, mindless entertainment. Well, that all changes with this latest addition; Charley’s working a case—from the confines of a convent no less—and her latest problematic spooks aren’t stalking her in order to cross over. Oh, and she’s eight months preggo. AND, the prophesy is not even close to being done with her yet. I typed up a list of must-remember events, and I have sixteen bullet points. SIXTEEN!I found that the author waited a touch too long to fill readers in on what’s what; it seemed like she saved every single reveal for this installment, and as much as I loved finally getting to open Pandora’s Box, it was a bit much to take in all at once. Practically every page had an ah-ha moment, but as gratifying as the discoveries were, this novel wasn’t nearly as funny as some of the previous volumes, so while it was a strong addition in many respects, it didn’t deliver in all areas. Still, the Mr. Wong mystery was solved, that’s all that matters.Jones definitely hit all of the right notes where my favourite characters were concerned. Cookie & Ubie are sneaking up on Charley & Reyes, and I’m really diggin’ Osh too. I even started to like Denise, Davidson’s witch of a stepmom, which was weird, but I’m so over her now. I was however disappointed that there’s still drama between the lead couple; they persist on doing stuff behind each other’s backs. I mean, it’s looking like their kid might be Earth’s only hope, so maybe they should get their act together because the fate of humanity quite possibly hangs in the balance. Just a thought.EIGHTH GRAVE AFTER DARK was a critical book in the CHARLEY DAVIDSON series, and despite my minor quibbles, I will be downloading the audio on Tuesday, and spending the next nine hours with Darynda Jones and Lorelei King for a repeat performance!
