About this audiobook

A wonderful Montana mystery starring fly fisherman-cum-detective Sean Stranahan, for fans of C. J. Box and Craig Johnson Wolves howl as a riderless horse returns at sunset to the Culpepper Dude Ranch in the Madison Valley. The missing woman, Nanika Martinelli, is better known as the Fly Fishing Venus, a red-haired river guide who lures clients the way dry flies draw trout. As Sheriff Martha Ettinger follows hoof tracks in the snow, she finds one of the men who has fallen under the temptress' s spell impaled on the antler tine of a giant bull elk, a kill that' s been claimed by a wolf pack. An accident? If not, is the killer human or animal? With painter, fly fisherman, and sometimes private detective Sean Stranahan' s help, Ettinger will follow clues that point to an animal rights group called the Clan of the Three-Clawed Wolf and to their svengali master, whose eyes blaze with pagan fire.

Interesting plot twist. A book full of crazy - from the murder victim to the murderer. Social commentary includes: controlling and abusive relationships, psychological impacts of grieving and transference on children, and escaping a painful past. I was more than half-way through the book before it became more about Sean Stranahan than the female sheriff. I don’t know that I will continue the series. The mystery was a good one with a decent plot. I loved the setting, as it’s my corner of the world. But I could not get interested in the characters. I found them flat and dull.

Still enjoyable, this didn't top the Gray Ghost Murders; recommending to my dad & dad-in-law, lovers of mellow PIs, way out west, & fly-fishing.

I received this book as a "First Reads" from Goodreads. That being said, it is easily one of the best mystery/detective novels that I have read in years.

Over the course of his three books in this series, McCafferty has developed an outstanding main character in Sean Stranahan. A nature loving, fly fishing, artist, and sometime reluctant private investigator, Stranahan comes across as a very likable person. He has his quirks and issues, but never comes across as the superhuman alpha male that many authors develop in this genre.

This book will appeal to anyone interested in the outdoors, Montana, fly fishing, or in following the pro/anti wolf issues being debated today in the West. McCafferty built this mystery around the wolf issue, and presents a balanced, fair insight into both sides of the debate.

The supporting characters, Sheriff Martha Ettinger, Sam Meslik, and Harold Little Feather all return, and to McCafferty's credit, are having their character's personalities developed and expanded. The descriptions of the landscapes in the book will make you feel like you are there.

In most of the novels of this type that I read, I can predict the outcome long in advance of the ending. This book kept me guessing right until the end. I found it most enjoyable.

With each book in this series, McCafferty has gotten better and better. I am eagerly looking forward to his next book.
