About this audiobook

Nikolai: I have been a contract killer since I was a boy. For years I savored the fear caused by my name, the trembling at the sight of my tattoos. If you saw my eyes, it was the last vision you'd have. With her, I am the mark and I am ready to lie down and let her capture me. Opening my small, scarred heart to her brings out my enemies. I will carry out one last hit, but if they hurt her, I will bring the world down around their ears.

Daisy: I've been sheltered from the outside world all my life. Home-schooled and farm-raised, I'm so naive that my best friend calls me Pollyanna. I like to believe the best about people. Nikolai is part of this new life, and he's terrifying to me. Not because his eyes are cold or my friend warns me away from him, but because he's the only man who has ever seen the real me beneath the awkwardness. With him, my heart is at risk . . . and also, my life.

Contains mature themes.

So an Ukrainian man and an American woman are texting:

    Nvrmnd.

    Never mind?

I’m not meeting u, however nice, at yr apt.

So you think I am nice? I am pleased.

Guess who’s the Ukrainian and who’s the American? You probably guessed wrong or maybe not.

I loved Daisy and Nikolai and I was sure “Last breath” would be a follow-up of their story and I’m a little disappointed now that I’ve found out it’s not even if I do want to know what happened to Regan and Daniel. I want more of them and even though I realize there was nothing more to add to the plot (especially after “Last Gift”) I would have been happy just reading about their everyday life and routine.

So the first chapter or two are told from Daisy’s POV, and the chapter after that is told from Nikolai’s POV and he’s spying on Daisy and her roommate from his window across the street, and he’s aware her roommate is sexually dissatisfied with her boyfriend and he says: "A man who goes to sleep without satisfying his woman deserves punishment. He sleeps through her self-pleasure? Death is too kind." That cracked me up! I mean, that was a low blow, how can you not like him after something like that? Especially after knowing that that was something which came from a man whose only physical interactions were with prostitutes. From the first line I knew I’d love Nikolai to death (pun intended), he was so completely clueless and naïve when it came to relationships, when it was Daisy the one who was supposed to be the innocent, unaware flower, and well, she was, but he was even more clueless than her. It was a pure delight seeing the early interactions between these two. At some point, he’s so desperate about how badly things are going between them that he quotes a line from a pimp he had known previously, remembering how pleased the prostitutes were when he would say that to them, hoping that this line will work with Daisy too.

When he thinks about what to do to please Daisy and make her like him he says: "It is different work than I've done in the past. The ending steps must conclude with her liking me instead of her dead on the floor." (This was probably my favorite line from the book). I mean, how can you resist a character like that?

Now all I hope is that “Last Breath” will be just as good.

Sweet romance with a side of suspense

Often when reading erotic or romance novels, there are situations or plot lines that are implausible or difficult to believe. If you're like me, you've probably never been offered a million dollars to pose as a fiancee; or rescued from an attack then whisked away to a private island; or stumbled into the snowbound cabin of a reclusive billionaire. These are fantasies and it's whether or not you like the characters that will keep you rolling your eyes or laughing out loud.
This begins in a similar vein: a Russian hit man spies (stalks?) a naive young woman who is a virgin in every way. Hey, it could happen. So you start reading, hoping the characters will make it worth your time (and money). And for me, it was.
Nick is the battered product of a horrific childhood spent being moulded into a killer by the Bratva, a kind of Russian hit man factory. He's more machine than man. Maybe it's because they kicked him out at 15 that there is still some humanity left. Enough to let him recognize something beautiful & pure when he sees it.
Daisy's mother was killed in a robbery when she was a child & her father's reaction was to lock her away from a world where this could happen. But by 21, she's had enough. Desperate to experience life, she runs away to Minneapolis & ends up sharing an apartment in a dingy part of town. She has little money & no possessions but she's free.
Nick has been watching her building. His next hit lives there & during surveillance, he spots Daisy. He didn't know people like her existed & is fascinated by her innocence, joy in every day things & lack of agenda. When he "accidentally" bumps into her, of course the attraction is immediate & mutual. Hey, don't judge...they have more in common than you think.
And so begins their story. They're a study in contrasts. He's hard, tattooed, cynical & socially inept. She's soft, naive, open & socially inept. Neither had a normal upbringing or any experience with a real relationship. Because the story is told in alternating chapters, we are privy to their thoughts & feelings as they grow closer & learn to let someone into their lives.
Unfortunately, Nick's past comes back to haunt him & puts Daisy in danger. I won't spill all the details but as this is Book #1, you know they end up together somehow, although not all issues are resolved. There is a fair amount of sexual content but it's the language that is graphic, not the sex.
Yes, it's fantasy but that's why we read these books. It provides a little escapism at the end of a hard day. I liked these two & the author has taken people who are polar opposites & created a story where it makes sense they get together. So you can sit back, shut out the world, suspend your disbelief & enjoy a little romance.

Not one of my favorites but ok. Don't think I will read the next one as it was a little to slow for me.
