- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5After getting back to normal following the birth of Hazel Marie’s twin daughters, Miss Julia gets an odd phone call from the twins’ private detective father, J.D. Pickens, who’s away chasing a missing person. Although she can’t be quite sure, Miss Julia thinks Mr. Pickens is in some kind of trouble. So she and her friend Etta Mae Wiggins (Ethel to Miss Julia’s Lucy) head off from North Carolina to West Virginia to find and rescue him. Then the fun ensues.Back at home, there’s another able-bodied man to rescue: Adam, the contractor who’s handling the renovations to Miss Julia and her husband Sam’s home. Miss Julia thinks he’s under the influence of a local woman whose mansion, it appears, may house a religious cult. All this adds up to great fun … humorous situations only Miss Julia could get herself into. And her adventures serve to distract her from the sad fact that Lloyd, the son of Hazel Marie and Miss Julia’s late unlamented husband, will be moving out of Miss Julia’s house. I love this series, and it’s one of the few that I collect in hardcover. They’re books to read, re-read and savor. Miss Julia is the best!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Miss Julia never fails to bring a smile to my face, and her activities in this book are just as outlandish as usual. Sam is off on a trip to the Holy Land when Miss Julia receives a garbled call that sounds like it is from J.D. Pickens, who has gone missing. Miss Julia and Etta Mae tear off to West Virginia to rescue him from a local sheriff who has apparently gone rogue. They encounter snake handlers and end up as spiriting Mr. Pickens away in the middle of the night. At home, there's a new resident running her own church with highly tattooed and pierced people who Miss Julia finds questionable. Tying together all of the loose ends is a challenge for Miss Julia and Etta Mae Wiggins, but they prevail. Meanwhile, Miss Julia undertakes an extensive remodeling project at home while dealing with Lloyd's eminent departure to live with his mother. Warning: This book is laugh-out-loud funny in numerous places!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love miss Julia books! I can't wait to start another one!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Miss Julia is worrying about "empty nest" syndrome when Lloyd starts talking about moving in with Hazel Marie and J.D. Pickens and Sam is headed off for a vacation to the Holy Land. To cope she starts a massive remodel to her home when Lloyd tells her that J.D. is overdue in coming home from a case and there is nothing for it but for Julia and Etta Mae to ride to the rescue. The fascinating thing about this entry in the series is that Miss Julia is exposed to a couple of new "religions", one is snake handling while at church, the other is piercing and tattooing "church" which seems to operate as more of a cult. As usual in the Miss Julia series there are no dead bodies but a couple of mysteries none the less. I do enjoy this series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5With JD missing and Hazel Marie unable to go after him because of the twins, who but Miss Julia (riding shotgun for Etta Mae) would be the one to head to his rescue? From a possible cult on the outskirts of Abbotsville to Miss Julia's stint as one of the buddies in a buddy road trip, Miss Julia to the Rescue was a fun read in what has been become a very long series. It's been amazing to follow Miss Julia's growth, particularly in her love for her deceased husband's son, Lloyd. The same woman who was so worried about appearances and how to manage her household on her own has created a wonderful family unit.
