      Love Mercy Johnson is a widow, living in the coastal California town of Morro Bay, co-owner of the Buttercream Café, photographer and essayist. Everybody close to her is either gone or estranged … until she gets a visit from her 18-year-old granddaughter Loretta Lynn “Rett” Johnson. She’s legally an adult, so she isn’t technically a runaway. But she’s on the run from a broken heart in her native Kentucky, and hanging on to a valuable banjo that doesn’t belong to her. Melina Jane “Mel” LeBlanc is almost twice Rett’s age, but she’s on the run, too. A former Las Vegas cop, she’s in Morro Bay quite by accident – an accident involving chickens. Befriended by Love’s late husband Cyrus, she still works in the feed store he once owned. Mel and Love are close, both having been devastated when Cy died. Love Mercy is not a mystery – the author say’s as much in a note to readers. I don’t believe Earlene Fowler’s earlier novel The Saddlemaker’s Wife was a mystery either. But that didn’t keep anyone from nominating it for an Agatha Award (given to mystery writers) in 2006. The line between general fiction and mystery are further blurred by having Benni Ortiz, heroine of the author’s mystery series, and her husband Gabe playing minor roles in Love Mercy. I’m guessing readers more familiar with the Bible than I am will recognize “love mercy” as being from the book of Micah (6:8): “Do justly and love mercy.” That’s where the book’s title and the protagonist’s given name come from. Whether it’s a mystery or not, Love Mercy is a terrific story, well told. I was hooked from page one and had a hard time tearing myself away from it for unimportant things like meals. The main characters, strong women of three different generations, are engaging. Mystery readers will find in the book’s pages the same entertaining style as the author’s mysteries. I particularly like Ms. Fowler’s insights into the grandparent-grandchild relationship. By Diana. First published in Mystery News, April/May 2009 edition.       Love Mercy probably marks the beginning of a new series for author Fowler, who also writes the popular Benni Harper books. At least, I hope it will for I enjoyed this book very much and would like to know more about the characters. The main characters are a woman named Love Mercy and her granddaughter, Rett. After having lost contact for years, Rett shows up on her grandmother's doorstep one day with a stolen banjo in hand. There are also problems to deal with stemming from a descent into dementia by Love's father-in-law. This series takes place in present time and Benni Harper and other characters from that series also appear here, which makes it rather interesting for readers who already know them. This book does have a strong Christian message, but I enjoyed that aspect of it. Readers who like the Benni Harper books will also enjoy Love Mercy.
