- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5To Have and To Hold (Book 1 Bridal Veil Series)Traci Peterson- Judith McCoy MillerBethany House PublishersChristian Historical RomanceSept 20115 StarsTracie Peterson along with Judith McCoy Miller is a favorite of mine when It comes to a series and when I seen this new series Bridal Veil starting I knew I had to read it. For one thing I enjoy books that take place in the south either during or just after the Civil War era, so this fit the bill perfectly. When Audrey Cunningham’s father Boyd makes a suggestion that they move back south to Bridal Veil, the plantation he grew up in, she hated to leave Pennsylvania and her job. She did agree however hoping that her father would stay off the alcohol once he was back south. But all is not as it seems , They are about to lose their home to back taxes that had never been paid, part of the plantation has been sold to build a resort on, leaving them the home and 20 acres. When her ex boss Mr. Marley from Pennsylvania as the investor and Marshall a top contractor from up north, Audrey has her hands full with hired help and Aunt Thora who wants nothing to do with the Yankee’s. With someone trying to sabotage the worksite, Boyd Cunningham near death and Audrey trying to keep up with construction workers boarding at the home things get a little harried at times.I found this book to be quite interesting once I got into it. It was slower to me at the beginning but them picked up the pace. I got a little irritated at Audrey at first when she seem to jump to conclusions about Marshall. Knowing his father was an alcoholic and all of his sons like him, she just assumed without knowing that Marshall drank also .I liked Aunt Thora even though she was not really a relative, her mind was still fighting the war and she was going to run the Yankees back home even if it took a shotgun to do it. I really got into the characters in the book and even the secondary characters add to the plot. With intrigue and romance, tension and a renewal of one’s faith. I feel this is a great start to a new series by these great authors.I received this complimentary copy from Bethany House through their bloggers review program. A positive review was not required and all opinions expressed her are strictly my own.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Long before this tale was even halfway through, I was more than a little tired of hearing about “The War of Northern Aggression” and evils of alcohol. Somewhere in the story, there was plot – actually an interesting one – but it gets lost in the dialogue concerning these two “evils.” By the end of the story, some of the characters did come across as being more likable than when they first appeared, but by then it was too little too late.
