About this audiobook

Award-winning author and former schoolteacher Jonathan Friesen has a knack for crafting exciting stories teenagers want to read. Rush features 18-year-old Jake King, an adrenaline junkie who jumps at the chance to join an elite group of firefighters who rappel into wildfires. Known as the Immortals, these heroes have a habit of dying young. But Jake's sort-of girlfriend thinks there's more to the Immortals' high death rate than bad luck. "The up-tempo plot keeps the story interesting, and the stunts keep the reader on the edge of their seats."-VOYA

Some people cannot get enough thrills. They need danger to stay alive. Jake King is such a person. At age eight, he climbed the gym ropes to the ceiling to retrieve his best friend Salome’s necklace, thrown in a vent by another student. At age seventeen, the thrills are harder to come by and he will risk it all, even Salome, to get another thrill. Brockton, CA is home to forest fire fighters and living there Jake is familiar with them. They rush into burning forests, rappel down mountain sides, and jump from helicopters to quench a fire. This is the ultimate high, and after being expelled from school for stealing gym equipment, fire fighting is Jake’s only alternative. Plus it is in his family’s blood; both his father and brother were fire fighters. However, he finds more than he bargained for in his chief, Moxie, and his band of Immortals. Will he risk everything to become an Immortal? You will feel the heat in Rush. You will feel the rush as Jake pushes boundaries. You may or may not sympathize with him as he risks his relationship with Salome and you may or may not relate to his loner/’always in trouble’ status. The story is good, not great. The thrills are exciting. You will be able to visualize some, but not all of Jake’s adventures. Rush should attract junior high and high school boys and might get them reading. It’s worth a shot.
