    Sheila Williams is the author of six books, including Things Past Telling, The Secret Women, and Dancing on the Edge of the Roof, the basis for the Netflix film Juanita. She is the librettist for the opera Fierce, commissioned by The Cincinnati Opera, with music by William Menefield, which premiered in July, 2022. She lives in northern Kentucky.

      It really saddens me that this book chalked full of stereotypes about black people is written by a black woman. While I do understand that Juanita's life with her kids may resonate with some black people, she didn't talk about or tackle any of the underlying issues like the prison industrial complex. Now, I didn't expect her to but to me that's what makes her use of these tropes inappropriate. And Jesse calling her African Queen irritated my spirit.

      Even they way the voice actor chose to speak sounded stereotypical. Like as a person from Michigan that's lived in Ohio twice I've never heard anyone talk like this. Juanita is always pissed about something and that gets old quick. ?

      Overall it a book filled with the angry and sassy black women stereotype. SMH

      Every woman should read this book. Makes you look at where you are in life.
