      More like a 4.5 - After some thought, I do have to say that I did not enjoy this installment as much as the first two. That's not to say that this book wasn't as entertaining as the prior two. It definitely started out with a bang and kept my interest throughout. I just had some issues with Nix's behavior at many times in this book, which took away some of the enjoyment for me. True, she did started showing this behavior in the prior book, but it wasn't to the extent as it was in this book.

      We do get a cameo of a character from a different series the author writes, which I thought was interesting. Of course, I didn't put it together until it was revealed who the character was because I have not read that series yet. Again, I enjoyed the Zombie Cards depicted at the end of the book.

      One more installment to go and I'm excited to see how the series comes to an end. So far, this has been quite a ride.

      I'm a total sucker for this series. The plot is entrancing, as are the characters. I like the 'mature' development of Benny and Nix's relationship in this third installment. I found the story fast-paced and thrilling. There weren't nearly as many zombies as I expected in this novel, but some new and very interesting characters instead. Oh hey Joe, what's up?

      Benny, Nix, Chong, and Lilah are on a quest through the zombie-infested Rot & Ruin to find a rebuilt civilization that they can only hope is out there. In the Mojave dessert (doesn't that just scream "Area 51" at you?) they clash with a religious death-cult whose goal is to send all living humans into the darkness before they, themselves, are allowed to enjoy the eternity of dark peace. However, our team of teens also discovers more evidence that somewhere out there civilization is trying to re-exert itself. This book isn't as strong as the first two in the series, but it was still enjoyable. Maberry tries to squeeze in so much action into his books that I go into action overload and start to get bored. I think the first book this series was strongest because Maberry spent a good amount of space developing the characters and setting. But the characters, setting, and plot don't make a whole lot of progress in this book...That space is reserved for extra action scenes. The theme that I appreciated from the earlier books was upheld in this one (zombies were people too, and sometimes the real monsters are human), and there is a newer theme of coping with loss. This theme could have helped the characters develop, but their development was pretty shallow. That said, I'm not trying to tear the book apart...it was a fun read and had lots of action. :) It's good fluff and I'm eager for what I believe is the fourth and final book.

      I was SO anxious for this book, and I gobbled it up! Things have gotten even more grim for Benny, Nix, Chong, and Lilah out in the Rot & Ruin. They run into members of The Church of Darkness, a group of tattooed Reapers who are determined to "save" the remaining humans by returning them to the darkness through death. Each of the foursome has to deal with obstacles. The group encounters Riot - a former Church of Darkness member who works to deliver humans to a place know as the Sanctuary. The zoms are mutating and the disease seems to be spreading to other species. A ranger named Joe Ledger (the star of some of Maberry's adult books!) shares some information and helps the foursome battle with the Reapers. A page turning thriller. Now I have to wait for book 4....maybe I'll read some Joe Ledger in the meantime.

      So good! Flesh and Bone picks up soon after Dust & Decay, and everyone is still reeling from their losses.Grief is a huge theme in this one, as the characters struggle to come to terms with the deaths of people they loved while still fighting to survive. This time around, in addition to zombies, they group is running from Reapers, a blood-thirsty religious cult bent on eradicating the stain of the human race.Flesh and Bone is all action, the story happening in the space of a day, I believe, and it is incredibly intense and violent. You *will* want to finish it in one sitting, and you will definitely chafe at the having to wait for the final book in this wonderful series!Highly recommended!
