I have to start this review with a quote, because while reading I kept think The Expendables and that is exactly what the heroine later asks.
"..And yeah, we're the Expendables. just younger, better looking, with cooler bikes and real bullets."

Yes that did not go by well, lol.

To the book, Ali is the sweet kindergarten teacher. And she does want Nate to see her as more than that. She tries her best. While the hero Nate does his best to keep his distance. Sighs, men are such idiots. She likes him, he likes her, he stays away cos of a promise to her brother. All brothers would say that. But hey we need the drama as these two dance around each other and keeps on sending mixed signals.

But this is romantic suspense after all and there sure is that too in it. Someone is after Ali. Why? That is for the Knights to find out and to protect her. Bullets will fly.

There is also a secondary story as we see the tension between another couple and that will lead up to book 2. Which seems to be another good one.

A thrilling ride with a couple who wants each other so much.

SummaryNate Weller also known as "Ghost" has loved Ali from afar but he knows she could never forgive him for what he had to do and withdraws from her. Ali Morgan, never thought that she would be going to the one man who practically ignores her. Her brothers best friend Nate. But when she gets mugged and being followed, she knows that her life is in danger. So she goes to Nate and the Knights for help. She knows that they do way more than just run a motorcycle muscle shop. But when they uncover a plot of an enemy that will prevent them from finding the truth, Ali and Nate join forces to track down the information her brother left behind. Their feelings for each other become awakened as the danger to them escalates...The HeroNate "Ghost" Weller is a brooding hero. He is quiet and mostly "grunts" in communication. Nate has just lost his best friend to torture and Nate still carries guilt and grief over what happened to the man who was like his own brother. Nate has always wanted Ali, but she is "forbidden fruit" to him. First she is his best friends younger sister and that is a line you don't cross. Nate was a swoon worthy hero. I have such a weakness for those silent broody types, and he makes the best of it. His way of communication are pretty hilarious. He only talks when he has to.The HeroineAli has always loved Nate, but he has always kept himself distant from her. Ali is still grieving for the loss of her brothers life. Ali is a school teacher and when she knows that her life is in danger she knows that it has to do with Grigg (her brother) and with Grigg gone now, she goes to the only people who are her family....the Black Knights, and more specifically Nate. Ali knows that despite the distance that is between them, he is the only help she has now. Ali is such a heroine that you can get behind. She is upbeat, and happy and boy she has hidden depths. She can handle a gun just as well as the guys and love her tenacity and courage she displays. “Wow, put the girl through a couple of days of high-level stress, dress her in black leather and give her a gun, and suddenly she went all Xena: Warrior Princess.” Plot and Story LineIn Hell On Wheels, we have a intense and thrilling romance that Julie Ann Walker introduces us to. Now this is the first time I have picked this author up and I can tell y'all right now its not going to be the last. I had such a blast with this book, it had me on the edge the whole dang time. It sets off with Ali being attacked, and she feels she has no choice but go to the only people that her brother Grigg considered family, the Black Knights. Now the Black Knights are a group of ex military men, who go on special op missions for the government. They do what needs to be done and take orders from high up the chain. They are still trying to recover from the loss of their own, Grigg who along with Nate were captured and tortured. Nate still bears quite a load of guilt from what happened especially since he couldn't save his closest friend. Nate is a hero you just want to hug. He is a bit withdrawn from the others, very broody but yeah sexy as hell. The story is pretty intense at times and what I admired about this book was the plot. I love a good romantic suspense, and Walker did a fabulous job with this one. I loved the development and the intrigue that the reader is introduced into. We also get to see the commadarie between the members of the Black Knights. I am excited to see what the author does in future books. “Uh-huh. Now Ali was beginning to get the picture. Riding backseat on a bike like Phantom was better than Mr. Blue any day. Not to mention the highly erotic act of wrapping one's legs around the man you loved.” The CoverLove the sexy appeal of this cover, I love the male model's stance with the motorcycle in the backdrop.Overall ViewHell On Wheels is a thrilling ride of adventure, suspense and desire that will blow your mind!! EXHILARATING

I read the first three in this series and was really disappointed. The reviews have been and continue to be good for these books, but I just couldn't get into them.

    I said it was readable.

It almost went and made a liar out of me.

Okay to be honest, it was readable. But it also tried really hard not to be. from calling dollar bills “George Washingtons” (no.never) to referencing Ashton Kutcher on punked, it really read like someone trying too hard to stay current and failing like your 69 year old grandfather that wasn’t even current in his day.

I didn’t love reading paragraphs about their firepower.

I also didn’t enjoy when the hero, Nate, said to the heroine, Ali, about how he wanted her (when she decided to ask if he ever laughs in the middle of the night—don’t get me started): “he wanted to plunge into her balls deep till she’s wriggling like a fish on a line.” Here’s the smelling salts cause I can tell you all just up and fainted from the swoons.

And I do appreciate dialects in books, but I didn’t get Nate’s. It was all contractions and lack of vowels. He said C’min instead of come in. I don’t get it. Or "what'r'doin" ??

The narrative style was tough to take, third person, lots of PoVs but with lots of "ugh" and weird expressions peppered in. And "Uh yeah," Not weird for us on goodreads, or even in a book in general, but from this point of view it felt off.

the couple's trajectory is non-existent and this book showcases exactly why romantic suspense hasn't been my bag. Neither the romance nor the suspense are satisfactory. Another best friend of big brother rescues and always loved little sister, luckily the feeling's mutual because they have sex then decide to get married after lusting after each other in the first 50%. Ultimately, I didn't care about them. None of them. 1.5

Nate Weller has been in love with Ali Morgan from the first, but he is determined to keep her at arms length to protect her from a secret that could destroy them both. Ali has other plans, however, and when she becomes the target of a shadowy conspiracy, she naturally turns to Nate and his fellow Black Knights for help.

The story has potential, but the plotting is problematic and the writing style is jarring.

The basic premise is solid with a group of former special forces operatives working together on unsanctioned, undercover operations. Unfortunately, there are some glaring plot holes such as the villain’s decision to go after Ali when she hasn’t a clue that anything is amiss, and a disgraced CIA agent with ethical qualms. There is also the fact that the Black Knights are not exactly as covert as they would like to think, and what on earth are they doing riding around on motorcycles loud enough to wake the dead?!

Ali is likable enough although she is far too sweet and perky for my tastes, which runs to snarky and feisty, and her tendency toward verbal diarrhea and tossing her cookies at the drop of a hat gets really old, really quick. Nate is much more appealing mainly due to his sexy, brooding and tortured manner. Their romance is alright but nothing really special.

The writing is the most significant drawback as it suffers from weak sentence structure, unexplained military jargon, excessive references to popular culture and numerous names and nicknames to keep straight. Nevertheless, the secondary characters are engaging, particularly Frank and Becky whose story is next.

All in all, not bad for a debut book and I’m sufficiently interested in the characters to continue with the series.

I'm really liking this series. I like the location, the background, the covert action that keeps our boys moving, the humor laced into the story, and the fancy motorcycles on the covers. They are fast reads, good for a lazy day with not much else that really needs to be done. This one, for all its heat, is a sweet romance at heart. This is also the first book in the series, but we still focus on the couple at the center of the story.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters seemed, real. Their personalities were ones you'd meet on the street. Ali was really funny and sweet, I definitely enjoyed reading about her and Nate. The rest of the guys were really cool. You could feel their pain and emotions, the writing was really evocative.

Ex-Marines riding Harley's? Heck yeah! Hell on Wheels is a combination of adventure, grief, and love wrapped up in one nice package. I really enjoyed this book. I thought the characters were all awesome. Kinda sad that I thought some of the background characters took the spotlight from Ali & Ghost. But, I still love them both! In the beginning, we're introduced to Ali & Nate (Ghost) who are sitting in the car after Nate tells Ali & her family that his best friend, their son/brother, Grigg Morgan passed away. Ali is trying to be strong & Nate is trying to comfort Ali without getting too close. The attraction between Nate & Ali is there, but Nate won't let it go too far. After all, Ali is his best friends little sister. So, we're all used to the guy doing all the chasing and the girl playing hard to get... well I'll be damned if the roles were switched. Nate "Ghost" Weller had a hard time keeping Ali's hands off of him when he was trying so hard to control his own urges to just take her right then and there. Least she knows what she wants right? Go on girl! I really liked that about Ali. She had no problem speaking her mind and standing up for what she wants. Girl has a backbone and they tried to shelter her? She wouldn't have none of that! Julie Ann Walker definitely takes you on a ride, you can feel the grief and the sorrow that the characters are feeling, the longing and lust that others are feeling, among the other emotions of the background characters. Kind of a rollercoaster ride, but a really good one.I would definitely recommend this book. I think Hell on Wheels was a great introduction to Black Knights Inc. and I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in this installment (in which you get peaks into within Hell on Wheels) So that was a teaser all its own. If you love yourself some contemporary romance that has hawt, sezzy, Harley ridin' hunks in it, then Hell on Wheels is definitely for you :)

This review and many more can be found on my blog at: The Muses CircleMy Review: First and foremost, before I even delve into this review, let's turn our attention for a moment to the cover and title of this book. Hot guy with a gun, wearing a sexy black tight v-neck t-shirt, and a bad ass motorcycle (later I would find out its name, Phantom) in the background. Hell On Wheels??? Oh, HELL YEAH! I really can't explain my joy when I came across this book. Maybe it's because I have a thing for bikers-- I am obsessed with the FX tv show Sons of Anarchy, and my boyfriend just so happens to ride as well. Also, the romantic suspense genre is starting to get a bit...boring, especially when it comes to the hero being a covert special ops agent. But combining the two worlds? I'm game! Now, I know it's been done before, how could I forget Jaci Burton's Wild Riders series. But the key is, it hasn't been over done. Julie Ann Walker is a new author that I was hoping would give us something fresh in this overly saturated genre. While she doesn't fail in this mission (like that? hehe), she does have some work to do to smooth out the kinks.First with what I liked about Hell On Wheels. The story opens with 2 people that are deeply hurt by loss but in completely different ways. You have Ali, our heroine, who has just been told that her beloved older brother Grigg has been killed on a mission. Then you have Nate, our hero, who not only suffers from the loss of his best friend, but also is being torn to shreds with guilt. Why does he feel guilt you ask? Well, that is for you to find out! What I can say is that Walker is fantastic with evoking emotions. It's been a long time since a romance novel has caused me to tear up or to feel heaviness in my chest. There are two scenes that come to mind, one with a flash back scene between Frank and Grigg and another with secondary characters Frank and Becky. I will leave it up to you to pin point the exact scenes. Not only does Walker give us a great tortured hero (who is alpha, but not over-the-top) and smart heroine (helpless females get on my nerves after awhile), she also is good at creating realistic and likeable secondary characters. Each of these characters have a role that we've seen done over and over again, such as Ozzie the geeky tech, Becky the house mechanic, and Frank, the gruff boss who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. Once these characters were introduced, I thought the book was going to go down hill. But somehow Walker brings a freshness to these cliche character types. Ozzie is my favorite. He is hilarious, not only because he annoys everyone with his singing and song choices, but because he is constantly quoting movies. Might I also add that while at first I imagined Ozzie to be nerdy since he is a wiz with computers and techie stuff, my imagination quickly changed with the way Walker describes him: "The guy was wearing a T-shirt with a picture of Mr. Spock's favorite hand gesture ad the slogan 100% Trekkie, which was slightly incongruous when compared to the shoulder holster and the mean-looking, matte-black gun secured to his side. He looked like some strange combination of geek and warrior. The man you'd call if you needed to invade a small country or translate a message written in Klingon." Sexy, right? :)If you are a fan of lots of sex scenes, you won't find it here. BUT WAIT! What Walker DOES do exceedingly well is sustaining the heat meter. When an author can create sexual tension, build on it, and you don't even realize the book is halfway over and the main characters haven't done the deed yet, then you know the author has a skill. And what's even better is the fact that Nate and Ali aren't the only ones that have a serious case of sexual tension. So does Frank and Becky, which will be the main leads in book 2, but I am getting ahead of myself! Now to why I only gave Hell On Wheels a 3 star rating. The beginning of the book absolutely scared me. The first couple of chapters didn't flow and I had to keep telling myself that this is a new author, give it time, the wrinkles will start to smooth out. And thank God they do. But some of her word choices were repetitive and it wouldn't have been that noticeable if they weren't bigger words, like "capitulated" and "surreptitiously".I also got annoyed with the way she wrote some of Ali's inner dialogue. I get that Ali doesn't like cursing, but does she really spell out the word "hell" as "H-E-Double Hocky Sticks" in her head??? Imagine that throughout the whole story. Yeah, quite irritating. My other big issue is the majority of the characters sounded the same, like they all had the same voice. Each character should sound different, have a distinct personality and I felt that other than maybe Ozzie, the dialogue and prose kind of runs together. I will say it does get a better by the middle to the end of the book; Nate starts to sound like Nate and Frank starts to sound like Frank. My last issue is something that happens with many first books in series. While I loved her secondary characters, there were a few minor ones that she spent too much time on. There were paragraphs I skimmed and a few pages I skipped. And I hate doing that. It's always tough to find a balance when you're trying to build your world and set up your characters for future books.Overall, I think that Hell On Wheels was a solid first book in a planned series. For a debut author, I think Julie Ann Walker has a lot of potential. While she isn't as steamy a writer as say veteran erotic romance author Lora Leigh, they do share a similarity in plot formula, such as the hero who falls in love with his best friend's baby sister, or the hero who thinks he is too old and jaded to be with the woman he wants. Lora Leigh is the queen of writing those plot devices, so we shall see how Walker makes them her own. I also think she has a great sense of humor, especially the Dum Dums lollipop drama between Becky and Frank. You will see what I mean when you read the book! Speaking of those two, Frank and Becky's story will unfold next in In Rides Trouble, due out next month on September 4th. I know, the release dates for Hell On Wheels and In Rides Trouble are only a month apart! Book 3, Rev It Up, comes out on October 2nd. I look forward to reading some more biker, special ops yumminess! Mia @ The Muses Circle

Read for ReviewOverall Rating 4.00Story Rating 4.25Character Rating 3.75First thought when finished: I can't wait for Frank and Becky's Book! What I Thought of the Story: Hell on Wheels is full of action, fun, and adrenaline rushes! I love the idea of the Black Knights as a team existing to kick ass and take names when the Government can't. These are often my fantasy alpha men. I really appreciated the way that Julie Ann Walker introduced the team to both us and Ali. It was great to meet them as we walked into the compound. They each have very unique skill sets BUT they take the initiative to learn other skills too. Nate, the lead in this story, is out to protect his Best Friend's sister Ali (whom he has loved for 10 years). I loved the methodical way that Nate and the team took each step as it came to them. Was it over the top in some areas? Sure but he was emotionally involved! I think otherwise they broke down this case like they would any other. I loved that! What I Thought of the Characters: Nate's language (word splicing) tended to get on my nerves but otherwise he was the strong, silent type of alpha hero. He didn't say much but I loved hearing his thoughts. I thought Ali's outbursts about his communication skills were dead-on. There were a few cheers from me anytime she went off on him! Poor Ali, it is hard to look strong when every other person in the story is used to this world and she is the fish out of water. It sometimes made her look weak but I thought she held up remarkably well for a kindergarten teacher. She wasn't the strongest person but I felt she was perfect for Nate. I love the rest of the Black Knights and the 2 gals that were introduced in Hell on Wheels! Final Thought: Great opening to a series that I think each book will be stronger than the last!

What is so glorious about special ops military men? I don't know, but please give me more. I loved everything about this story from the characters all the way down to the chop shop. It was a rollercoaster of emotion with the added incentive of not only one steamy and intense romance, but the building of yet another. I must actually admit that I find myself more drawn to Becky's character a little more than Ali, but please don't let me miss lead she was a rocking character as well. She is far from your typical girl, and I loved how over the length of this book she transforms from a small town school teacher to a independent and borderline dangerous young woman. Nate "Ghost" Weller is the male lead character, and he along with Ali brother have worked for an independent special ops contractor for several years. With the cover of a custom Chopper Shop; they have successfully mislead everyone they know. Except maybe Ali! Then Nate must return home to deliver news of Griggs death. This begins the story, and rolls into a chain of events that bring Ali to Nate front door. It seems far more sinister hands are at play, and everything is not what it appears. With Ali on the compound Nate will be forced to recognize his feelings, and acknowledge Ali for more than his best friends little sister. I cannot tell you enough how much I loved this story. This is the first novel for the Black Knights series, and it was so entertaining to meet every one of the characters. Every single one is incredible, and I am looking forward to seeing what is in store for each one. As I said earlier I found myself a sucker for Becky and Boss, so the next book is one I can't wait to start. For romance fans that adore some action packed story lines this is the book for you! In one heck of a ride, Hell on Wheels lifts its reader up and hauls you along on a tale worthy of Mission: Impossible. Nate Weller, black-ops if ever there was one; is back from the sand, bringing with him memories of torture and the death of his best friend. He has to be the one to tell Grigg’s parents he wasn’t coming home this time – or ever. A bad enough task alone but when you add in he also has to tell Grigg’s sister, Ali. Ali who has kept him awake since he was 21 and she was 17. Ali the love/lust of his life and someone he could never have. All is seemingly well for a few months until Ali starts noticing things aren’t quite right in her world. Things are moved in her home, she keeps seeing someone out of the corner of her eye…..then she’s the victim of an aborted mugging. It all adds up to something she doesn’t know but wants desperately to. So off she goes to Chicago in search of answers. Twenty hours from Jacksonville and twenty hours until her life changes forever.Grigg worked for Black Knights, Inc. a motorcycle shop in the Windy City. Not likely. He, along with Nate and various others was a mechanic when he had to be but he also was a sniper, spotter for Nate (considered the best of the best). Ali meets his boss, Frank, the others in their group and immediately knows that they are far, far more than she or her parents thought. They also find bugs (electronic!!) in all her underwear which sets off a paranoia unknown to the kindergarten teacher. The games being played (bad and my favorite: girls vs guys) make this tale impossible to put down. You will love the interplay between Nate and Ali plus the rest of the team. When you meet Peanuts, you’ll laugh your head off and then cry because he’s such a comfort to Ali. Definitely pick this one up!
