My favorite book in 2014 is still the best book ive ever read or listened to

I actually mostly enjoyed reading this, so I was inclined to give it 3 stars, but it is very flawed and that made me feel that it needed to be marked down. First of all, there are issues with the writing. The tense is not consistent. That's inexcusable. Luckily it wasn't a frequent issue as far as I noticed, so it didn't get too distracting. Also, I don't think it works to have a single chapter at the end from a different point of view. Either establish multiple points of view from the beginning, or figure out a way to end your book with only your main narrator. The author reused several phrases like "my dress parted" to a distracting extent. It's not a bad way to phrase it but it's strange enough that it's not something that should be used more than once. Most of the dialogue was actually good, but occasionally I found myself thinking "people don't talk like that."

I thought some depictions of the mental health system as well as Naomi's issues were quite unrealistic. She didn't seem, from my admittedly superficial knowledge of the subject, to have DID. Her delusions seemed closer to schizophrenia, though hallucinations in schizophrenia are generally only auditory. I imagine that her doctors would at least have come to this conclusion...but the subject of her being undiagnosable was strange to me. I was also somewhat bothered that her mental illness was directly traceable to a trauma. That is a common theory behind DID so it would be okay, except that her case is so different from DID. Even if Lana is an alter, there is clearly something besides DID going on when a patient hallucinates her father (or a fictional version of him) and her boyfriend in the room with her, and creates an entire alternate personality for *another person*. Sounds kind of like a brain tumor....

Literary representations of mentally ill women are of particular interest to me (as a scholar and as a casual reader) and I certainly noticed some cliches in this one. The patient who doesn't trust the mental healthcare system and thinks no one really wants to help her. An unfortunately true stereotype, but one that wasn't represented in a particularly new or interesting way in this novel. Even if it's something that is very real, there are only so many times you can present it in the exact same way before it becomes tired (this applies to pretty much anything). But of course, these patients change their tune when they meet the doctor who is just *so different* from all the other doctors. It is a pretty typical formula.

Anyway despite only including the negatives in my review, I didn't hate the book. It was engrossing. I finished it in one sitting. They weren't the roundest characters I've ever read, but I felt something for them. And I enjoyed the "twist". I didn't begin to guess it until almost 90% through the book, and I didn't have the whole thing until even later (I figured out first that Lachlan=Max and then that Naomi=Lana only just before it was revealed). Unlike many books with twists, this didn't feel cheap or tacked on. It worked well.

I probably wouldn't recommend this book, but I don't regret reading it.

I have two words for this book... Mind F*ck!
Unravel will take you on an emotional rollercoaster.
Every time you think you know what will happen something else comes up leaving you empty.

The author does a superb job at making you feel every event in this book. Your brain will feel fried after reading and your mind will be thinking about this book days later.

I don't want to give away too much, but the characters are amazing. They have depth and emotion. Naomi is in a love triangle and trying to cope with her friends traumatic life.

Lachlan comes and goes, Max is forever.

The beginning of this book is a tad slow, but don't give up because once she starts telling her story you wont be able to stop reading.

    Highly Recommend

Naomi is a 27 year old woman who has been locked in an inpatient psychiatric hospital for reasons that she cannot remember. She is a completely unreliable narrator as she gradually discloses her story to her psychatrist, in the hopes that her hallucinations and nightmares will subside. As Naomi gradually recalls her fight to help her friend and her intimate relationships with Max and Lachlan she gets closer to the haunting truth of what really happened. It is very difficult to see the twists and turns of this dark and sexy novel. While it was fairly interesting, as it was difficult to figure out what the heck was going on, it read more like a romance novel than a thriller to me. This is probably because the author spent so much unnecessary time describing long explicit sex scenes, which detracted from the story line. Additionally, the inpatient psychiatric setting was rather farfetched. I am sure that readers who enjoy sexy romance books will probably enjoy this but it was not really for me.

I am so very confused right now! This book is better than a three-star, but not enough to round up to a four-star rating. If I wasn't confused, I would definitely give this no less than four stars. I will keep this a spoiler-free review, though.

I received this book through the New Adult Book Club, here on Goodreads and am glad I was able to read this, but, honestly, now that I know the "punchline" I am so confused; not about Her character, but I am about the "Hims" -- how did Naomi keep them separate and not recognize they weren't really what she thought? Maybe Ms Reed needs to follow up with a His POV companion. Then, again, how very sad of Naomi to be subjected to what she was subjected to and only be able to confide in Lana! And, in hindsight, what a great mom Lachlan had and what an interesting conversation she had with Lachlan when she knew Naomi was listening in the dark!

This story kept me hooked, which is saying something as I never really had long bits of time available to read. Even with the story laid out through multiple time lines, the "way back when", the "up until a month ago" and the "now", it was easy to jump right back in when I had a spare 5 or 10 minutes.

For those of you have have enjoyed this book, check out If I Break, by Portia Moore. The "punchline" isn't different but the POV is from the other side. If there is a sequel/companion novel, I will happily read this again before beginning it. If I haven't promised to read other books for review with the deadlines looming, I'd be starting back at the beginning.

    Definitely a reread book!

what an absolutely gripping novel! It was sexy/explicit, it was baffling, it was heart wrenching, it was totally messed up, it was beautiful, and a complete and utter roller coaster ride. I can't even think of a synopsis where the heart of the story is not revealed. So I'll just say that it has touched me! I have not been able to get this book out of my head since page 1 and I don't think it'll ever leave.

I loved this book. The romance aspect of it was wonderful, but what I truly enjoyed was the depiction of mental illness. The plot had me on the edge of my seat from the start and the twist at the end was inspired. Unravel is brilliant and I cannot wait to read more by Calia Read

Naomi is currently in a Mental Hospital. Naomi isn't sure why she's there and seems to be normal. She finally opens up to one of her doctors and begins to tell her story so she can hopefully figure out why she has been admitted and so she can leave. i was interested in this story from the beginning and just as confused as Naomi. For some reason i always get tricked by books with mental illness involved. For some reason I always side with the character and am willing to believe they don't belong there. As a result I tried to pay careful attention here Naomi has just finished her first year of college which provided some potential clues and some of the character interactions seem off. Despite some of my suspicions i was still surprised by the outcome. I felt like some of the characters were not fully fleshed out but this may have been due to the situation.

‘Listen closely. Hang on to every word. But most of all, please believe me.’ It’s been a full month since Naomi Carradine was involuntarily admitted to Fairfax Mental Health Institute. She’s adamant that she’s fine, healthy and ready to go home but the doctors are also adamant that it’s going to require more time for her to be ready. Her memories of the past leave her baffled and confused as to why her parents would ever put her in a place like this. As part of her therapy she begins to tell her story, her full story, and slowly the painful pieces of her life begin to piece back together.Unravel was incredibly captivating from the very start. The story transitions between her present life in the mental health institute and various pieces of her past. I was thoroughly engrossed and eager to find out how Naomi got in the position she was in and with each new bit of information it continued to be intriguing but all conclusions I came to were shrouded in a haze and nothing made sense. I spent the majority of this book in a haze, questioning everything and disliking the character because of her actions. It wasn’t pleasant, however, it still made for quite the page turner. It feels wrong to complain about the confusion the story causes only to have it all answered in the end, but I can’t help it. There were various instances where I was close to quitting, but as I said, it does make sense when you have the resolution but getting there is half the problem. My main issue from the very beginning was the semblance of a love triangle that was happening. Naomi has returned home for the summer from college but is staying with her friend Lana’s parents as her parents are traveling Europe. Naomi went off to college, leaving behind Lachlan after the two professed their love for each other. Upon Naomi’s return however, she meets Max and their tumultuous affair is sudden and instantaneous. It’s incredibly hot and super steamy but it came straight outta left field.‘...if you listened very carefully, you would hear the sound of a faint tear. That was just the sound of my heart unraveling like a torn ribbon. All from one touch.’ This is the 2nd time they’ve met.‘The hunger I had for him was like an addiction. It controlled me. It took away the power I thought I had and controlled every single action I made.’ It was an eye-rolling good time. In addition to their mad infatuation with one another right off the bat, Max was doing things for her that no new boyfriend would ever do, like get crazy angry when something bad happened to Naomi’s friend and subsequently helped her pay rent when she needed to move into her own place. Again, it all becomes justified in the end and makes much more sense in retrospect but there were sections that were so ill-fitting that it made it a tough pill to swallow overall.Unravel is a New Adult novel that touches on the deep topic of mental illness. Having read books that featured similar storylines, I can’t say Unravel was my favorite or that it was even portrayed accurately. Not being a doctor, I could be completely off the mark but some things just didn’t seem logical. I did enjoy the psychological twists overall though because they were shocking and kept me guessing right up till the very end. Just a heads up, there is one, maybe two incredibly violent scenes of rape that were very hard to read about.I’ve been very wary about branching out into New Adult because the subject matter never sounds like my cup of tea. Unravel seemed to be possess an originality that I would enjoy so I took a leap of faith. While I wasn’t completely disappointed, I did expect more.

I felt this book had a promising cover blurb that sounded great, but it simply didn't hold my interest. I picked it up several times and put it back down because I wasn't engaged by the story and was confused by the first chapters. At first I thought the author was using an intentionally disjointed writing style to capture Naomi's feelings of anxiety and unease in her clinical environment but I had to revisit passages several times to make sense of their placement and purpose in the story, and began to find the scattered, jumpy text distracting. As an occasional device I may have found it interesting, but it continued throughout the book and discouraged me from connecting with the characters.Although I am a fan of the new adult genre and often read erotically charged novels, I felt the sex scenes in this book didn't play well. For me, when two characters have an undeniable chemistry it shouldn't be tinged by regret. It seemed every encounter Naomi had was riddled with a sense of anxiety and none of the fun. I honestly would have abandoned the book if I hadn't received it from the Library Thing Early Reviewers program. I did finish the novel, and realized the "why" behind the early encounters and the anxiety they would've caused the main characters, but the graphic scenes of sexual abuse, rape and violence were stomach turning and the sudden switch of narrator in the last few chapters was bothersome to me.The thing I liked best about the book was the gorgeous cover art. The frozen water droplets on the cover form a mask of sorts if you see the book at a distance. I found it beautiful, and if I saw it in a store I would be drawn it.

I want to thank Library Thing Early Reviewers and Ballatine for this book and opportunity to provide an honest review. My first thought starting this book was WHAT. IS. GOING. ON. I cant review this story in detail without spoilers. I just cant but Im giving it the old college try.The pages fly from the get-go. The reader peels the layers back, not knowing why our main character is in a psych hospital. What put her there? What is real or imagined? The reader is given the piecemeal backstory and this overshadowing, foreboding feeling as the book goes on. I ended up questioning the people who visited, who were her friends, family, doctors, staff, and what was everyone's role leading to her emotional breakdown and hospitalization. The subject matter was fairly dark (ick!) but the last few chapters brought the twists and reveal, and everything came to focus. Definitely some, "Ohhhh, holy sh...." moments. I wish I was more prepared going into this but to be prepared would have spoiled it which, ironically, added to the appeal of the story. The writing was quite good, no reading speedbumps with grammar and also engaging. I would have preferred to have a slower paced twist and turn, not all of it at once. The timing felt jarring but it felt purposeful - a writing device that made the story work. Bottom line, if you like dramatic mysteries and/or epic, twisty mind-trips, you'll absolutely love this story.

Wow, what a mind blowing book! If you are looking for a book that will keep you on your toes guessing as to its real direction, then look no further: Unravel should be your next read! Due to the twistiness of the plot, however, this book is nearly impossible to review without revealing spoilers, so I will keep it short. As I do not want to inadvertently mislead or reveal any surprises, I will summarize the plot by referring to the book description:Six months ago, I was happy. I was simply Naomi Carradine. One month ago, I was admitted into a psych ward.Yesterday, Lachlan visited me. Kissed me. And told me that I’m starting to lose my mind.Hours later, Max haunted my thoughts, reminding me I’m not crazy and that he needs my help.A few minutes ago, I drifted further from reality, trying to unravel the past. And now...everyone thinks I’m insane. But, I know he's real, and I know he needs me.Do you believe me? What a spell-binding read! I was hooked from the very beginning, and couldn't put it down until I was finished! If you like me value originality in your reads, then I can't recommend Unravel highly enough!

I found this book hard to get into until about 1/3 of the way through it. Once I got into this book, I couldn't put it down. This book was written excellently. It was both easy to follow and easy to read. Unravel was a wonderful heartbreaking journey. The twist and turns were unexpected but not unreasonable. I would have liked another chapter giving a few more inside hints before the book ended but I was not left hanging on for more.

*I received this book through LibraryThing Early Reviewers.*This was a very interesting read, and while I had my suspicions throughout, the ending still caught me by surprise. Naomi is a compelling character and I spent most of the book convinced she was not the least bit insane, just having a few issues dealing with the disintegration of her best friend's life. I finished this book just a little impressed at the way Naomi used her mental illness to deal with the issues in her life that were too painful to face head on. A very interesting read.

Unravel by Calia Read was great, thrilling and sensational read. There are so many facets to this tale. It's like peeling and onion. Every chapter reveals something. New and unexpected. I would recommend this book for people who loved Gone Girl. Read it, you won't be sorry.

There’s a point towards the end where I was thinking “wow, I really don’t see what’s wrong with this girl. Why is she in a crazy hospital? I’m no doctor but I can diagnose her as not crazy, just under pressure with all the drama going on, it’s really mean for all these people to make her seem like she is insane” and then BOOM, holy shit, now I see why.And I immediately mentally went back trying to see how this could be and yeah, the pieces are there I just wasn’t putting them togetherBecause we’re reading from her perspective so we’re the patient. And that tripped my mind up.SO FUCKING GOOD.These are becoming my favorite types of books. (the second with this particular disorder that I’ve read this year (and I still didn’t see it coming!) and I’m seriously intrigued).Dark physiological thrillers. Head fuckers.I was sickened once everything really started for Naomi and Lana. It was a punch in the gut I wasn’t expecting and not something I’ve read about ever. Not once. And I almost puked in my mouth. And once it almost wrapped up, I was still sick. Because it was still going on. Even now I’m pissed just thinking about it! What’s wrong with people!?!Lachlan and Max.Ah, boy. Most of that was really, really hot.And then it was sweet. The story is a good one, it is done well. It is done in such a way that it is not tacky, which is how this book could’ve turned out very, very bad. Unravel is incredibly detailed and complex. The back story alone is touching and worth the read (and there were so many clues, why didn’t I see!?!?!!).A well written, edge of your seat page turner. An unbelievably, moving rapture of feelings. Unravel is one of my favorite books this year.

I held my breath for the first 70 pages. UNRAVEL ripped me apart in a way that I've never experienced before. Naomi's tragedy and love story will haunt me for a long time. Mental illness is difficult to write about, but I think Calia Read did justice to the before and after of Naomi's story.

AMAZING...HEART WRENCHING...this was a story that will stay with me for a long time. The author wove together the story in a wonderful way, so much so that I was desperate to get back and read some more. I love books that will draw you in and I felt that I was right there with Naomi. I felt her pain, anger, frustration, lust, and love. I was looking for a new author and I have found one in Calia Read, she is a master story teller and I am looking forward to reading other books by her.

I have a BS in psychology and have known quite a few people struggling with mental illness personally. This book really grabbed me and the main character had me interested in her story (told from her point of view jumping back and forth from the present to flashbacks of how she ended up in the mental institution). The way the story unravels as Naomi tries to piece her life back together is riveting. I think this book would be difficult for some to read, since it is very moving and covers a couple topics that are not comfortable to think about, but I highly recommend it anyway. If you can handle the subject matter, read the book. It's very well written.I can't say you'll enjoy the book, since it's a tough subject, but the book is excellent. Well written and effective.

This was deep. DEEP. My heart is so broken. The events in the book happened a little bit slow but this book managed to keep me up so late.

My heart goes out to Naomi. Gawd. The things that happened to her, I can't even.

I had been afraid, too. This book made me realize some things. It's scary how sometimes I think that it's so good to create a world where what I want happens. I also think that in that way, I could escape reality because sometimes, shitty things happen. But.. Oh. My. Goodness. I cannot believe I ever wish that. I have been blessed to have this amazing life I'm living right now. I will never, ever wish to live in another story because I tell you, there can never be a more beautiful life than what you're having right now. You want to be more pretty? Rich? Anything that you're not today? Think Again.

It's not the best book in the world, I know that, but I really find this interesting. Especially when I finished it within few hours. This book could be better if those steamy scenes were not included. The space could be used in making those confusing parts clearer like MAX IS LACHLAN? How the hell did that not cross my freaking mind? and other things.

I actually guessed that Naomi is Lana and she is suffering with a split personality disorder before I finished the book though it's the first time I think that I read about this kind of disease. When I came to the part that actually confirmed my suspicion, I'm still surprised. This was a great read, nevertheless. :)

It's been 6 hours since I finished reading this book and my mind is still screaming WTF???!!

I just.. I don't know what to even say. This book was so all over the place but at the same time wasn't. I wish we got more of an explanation at the end. There are so many things that I am trying to piece together.

Naomi isn't crazy.. or is she. Her story is told not only through the present but also by the past. Things is her present make more sense the further in we get. But we don't really "Unravel" her story until the end, and even then I was left saying "What the hell did I just read?!?" This is one of those books that for me I can't say much without the fear of spoiling something. I just know I want more! I feel like I need more to fully understand everything.

From my blogWhen I came across this on Amazon I just had to read it, the summary and cover draw you right in, I was completely intrigued. This is labeled Novel Adult genre which I haven't completed figured out. (Have you?) I will recommend to all Psychological Thriller fans that do not mind a few good detailed sex scenes. Warning - there is an incest rape scene, please proceed with caution when reading this amazing book. One of my favourite styles of a character is having the unreliable narrator, wow wow wow. I seem to read an amazing book every year with this style, so many great books I can recommend but not during the review as it will give away delicate details, just go into the book knowing less. This book kept me up late, totally unputdownable. It takes me a week to read a book and this took me 3 days, reading at lunch, late nights, while watching a movie with daughter (naughty I know) I just didn't want to be torn from the rock climbing book journey of the characters and miss the view at the end.Naomi and best friend Lana. Early on I was trying to figure it out, it is what I love to do, I didn't want to believe and thought it has to be the reason why but the ending still was shocking, I had a little but not the full mystery and it was brilliant. Seriously I felt like I was floating on a cloud that was surrounded with lightning, a total living on the edge moment. This doesn't get a 5 star because I wanted more, Calia Read answered the important questions but the supporting characters played a huge role and I wanted closure and the person that abused to receive justice. My favourite genuine heartbreaking but amazing scene was when Lachlan's mom was talking to him and Naomi overheard it all, memorable and real. Amazing is probably how I would describe Calia Read's Unravel. Although I figured out the twist about our main character Naomi Carradine early on, the climactic, shocking reveal at the end still left me in absolute awe. I don't want to reveal too much plot as it will probably give away the story, but you'll just have to trust the gorgeous cover and the captivating blurb. This book has the perfect combination of an intriguing storyline, likable and well developed characters, flawless writing, and enough suspense to keep you turning the pages. As Naomi hops onto an emotional ride to unravel her memories, her past tugged at my heart. I also enjoyed the stories of the supporting case, Lana, Lachlan, and Max and eventually escalates to an epic revelation that ties everything together.Calia Read is a great writer, and she created an alluring, entangled web that will get your heart pounding and your mind shaking. This is one of my favorites so far for 2014, and it left me with a huge book hangover. I will definitely check out other books by this author.
