About this audiobook

A charming tale for people of all ages (but especially for young Sam Vimes) from the pen of Miss Felicity Beedle, Discworld's premier children's author.

From Snuff: "Vimes' prompt arrival got a nod of approval from Sybil, who gingerly handed him a new book to read to Young Sam. Vimes looked at the cover. The title was The World of Poo. When his wife was out of eyeshot he carefully leafed through it. Well, okay, you had to accept that the world had moved on and these days fairy stories were probably not going to be about twinkly little things with wings. As he turned page after page, it dawned on him that whoever had written this book, they certainly knew what would make kids like Young Sam laugh until they were nearly sick. The bit about sailing down the river almost made him smile. But interspersed with the scatology was actually quite interesting stuff about septic tanks and dunnakin divers and gongfermors and how dog muck helped make the very best leather, and other things that you never thought you would need to know, but once heard somehow lodged in your mind."

Terry Pratchett

Terry Pratchett (1948–2015) was the acclaimed creator of the globally revered Discworld series. In all, he authored more than fifty bestselling books, which have sold more than one hundred million copies worldwide. His novels have been widely adapted for stage and screen, and he was the winner of multiple prizes, including the Carnegie Medal. He was awarded a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to literature in 2009, although he always wryly maintained that his greatest service to literature was to avoid writing any.

GfgÿtThis adorable journey begins with a young man’s sudden relocation to his grandma’s house, and from there goes into details about the various interesting, and rather quaint characters, and personalities who now inhabit his personal orbit. From snippy maids, to simple men, shop keepers, and plumbers, every new individual is its own new adventure.

While long on chapters, this is definitely a children’s story, and not at all what I would classify as an adult tale.

For one, the main character is, I believe around 8 yrs old, so his views and what he develops as his interests of the world and people around him, are definitely in tune to his age range. And, what he is ultimately interested in as a personal hobby, and possible career goal, is certainly one of a kind (or as the audio book points out, one of only two kinds!)

Thankfully, rather than his unusual interest meeting with either ridicule or derision, the young man has a very loving and dotting grandma, who supports him in his unusual endeavors, and even goes out of her way to ensure that her grandson is able to expand his network of valuable social and career contacts. Well, as best he can for a young man so below the his age of majority.

Some Readers and/or Listeners may be disappointed that this tale lacks much of Terry Pratchett style and involvement of the Disc World Theme, and While I can’t argue with that, this tale could easily stand on its own outside of the Disc World genre with very few modifications, and yet remain, just as charming and adorably simple a tale.

If you enjoy heartwarming family oriented tales, (like those found on the Hallmark Channel), or your family is expecting to soon grow in size a few months down the road, and you happen to have a young child or two around, who may be within the Ages of 3 - 8, then this short journey through the eyes of a child will likely be a light, refreshing, and enjoyable journey to listen to together one weekend afternoon, while sharing a nice family picnic, and some board games.

However, if you are a single, unmarried, adult, without children; while this tale may make you smile, you’ll likely feel a twinge of regret that you just spent so many hours listening to this charming, sweet tale, versus having indulged in some other fare with a bit more substance, at a faster pace, and with much more gratuitous violence and depth. But, on the bright side, You did probably smile at the end.

    NARRATOR REVIEW - Helen Atkinson-Wood
It’s funny that I only listened to this tale 15-20 minutes ago, and yet, between then, and now, I had almost completely forgotten the gender of the Narrator, I was so completely entrance by the range of characters delivered. Bravo! I throughly enjoyed Your performance, and look forward to hearing others by you.
