About this audiobook

From the acclaimed author of The Troop—a book that is “utterly terrifying” (Clive Barker). “Fans of unflinching bleakness and all-out horror will love this novel….Each new shock is freshly disturbing” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

A strange plague called the ‘Gets is decimating humanity on a global scale. It causes people to forget—small things at first, like where they left their keys, then the not-so-small things, like how to drive or the letters of the alphabet. Their bodies forget how to function involuntarily. There is no cure.

But far below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, a universal healer hailed as “ambrosia” has been discovered. In order to study this phenomenon, a special research lab has been built eight miles under the sea’s surface. But when the station goes incommunicado, a brave few descend through the lightless fathoms in hopes of unraveling the mysteries lurking at those crushing depths…and perhaps to encounter an evil blacker than anything one could possibly imagine.

Still waiting for the end. I feel like I need to read another book to understand what this book is about.

I liked his other book The Troop. But this was not a well balanced book.
So many flashbacks, so much over the top gore. I was not afraid during the read, i was waiting for the book to be over.

I want to start out and say that the writing of this book was brilliant despite my two star review... the plot just wasn't for me and I didn't find myself really enjoying it. I thought the premise starting out was really intriguing, but by the end, it had really lost my interest. I finished it because the writing is really good and stimulating, and I was hoping for a more satisfying ending as I really enjoyed 'The Troop'-- despite almost getting physically sick while reading it. This book had elements of 'The Troop' with the same vivid imagery and it's unwillingness to hold back on detail, which is why I still wanted to finish it. Nick Cutter's way with words is an inspiration I would like to adopt into my own writing, honestly... the plot just wasn't in my realm of real interest.

While there are no aliens that I could discern from this book, I believe this is a GREAT fit for anyone into that spectrum of fiction.

The concept of horrors happening deep below in the ocean was very intriguing. However, there was far too much jumping back and forth between memories and dreams. Also a few times the book had characters doing things that are cliches horror moments that are frustrating. Dont split the party because bad things happen. And yet even when bad things happen, they still Continuously decide to split up. The memories were drawing points, very immersive and actually a little creepy. But the dream moments were too surreal to find actually scary. A bit of a Spoiler. But I find it hard to believe a veterinarian would have a stronger mind then someone with a militaristic background.

Wow that actually scared me a little bit. So creepy and triggered my thalassaphobia.

TW for animal torture and death. Also SA on children.

    TW: Animal death, animal abuse.
This is my second book from Nick Cutter. I did not like it as much as the troop, but I was still hooked. At times, I found myself holding my breath and even feeling a little claustrophobic.

This book was okay, I think the concept and setting were exceptionally strong but as others have said, it feels like it drags on too long and overuses much of what makes the story interesting or dread-inducing. By the last third of the book I felt like I was only finishing out of spite to see what the final payoff was after sinking hours of my time into it… unfortunately the ending was just boring and I didn’t care anymore. If you like isolation, eldritch horror, and exploring childhood trauma and can get past the absolute slog of each scene taking longer than it needs then you might enjoy it. I personally didn’t care about a single character or what happened by the end. This was my first Cutter read so I hope his other works are better than this one.

Dark and brooding with notes of Craven and Lovecraft. This book is actually disturbing.

I've read this book before, but it doesn't let go. It keeps nagging at the mind just like the authors first book "The Troop". Not in a bad way, but I keep thinking about the "survivor" and the events that transpired, so I had to read it again.
I really recommend this book but it's a bit of a minfuck so beware.

The main story is intriguing and kept me interested. Sadly, half the book is miserably boring flashbacks and dreams that are as uninteresting and nonsensical as they are bleak. I could have really enjoyed this book without any of the flashbacks or dreams, maybe even if they were sparse and short. I don't need a fifteen minute dream about feeding your kid baby food that turns into the magical sludge found at the bottom of the challenger deep. I found myself groaning literally every time we were pulled out of the present and ultimately gave up a little over halfway through.

The gruesome horror elements really culminated to a precipice by the end. This really captivated me. I loved how the story constantly made you second guess reality. I loved the vocabulary choices for all the sick (carbuncled, narcotic) horror. Clayton and Luke were two well-fleshed out characters, and you are always interested to learn more about them. Perhaps most importantly, the story will linger in mind for a while as I turn over some of the cool story elements and horrific imagery.

    Well done, Nick Cutter!

Very disturbing and left me wanting more. His other books seem to be very similar style. This is a pseudonym for Craig Davidson I believe.

The writing is done quite well but for my money, the story is way too long, repetitive, and highly lacking.
The too long this is a real issue with modern-day, say around 1990ish forward and growing worse ever since, fiction. It the Story needs it and the Writer can handle it, long is not an issue as some of my favorite all-time works are long. What happens is Publishing Companies demand an x-amount of words/pages and the Art of the Story and Writing Process Suffer.
This book is typical of modern-day "horrish" novels and had I not the lifetime of experience reading Poe, Bradbury, Steinbeck, Bloch, Beaumont, Matheson, Hemingway King, Straub, Campbell, Vonegutt and so it goes....I'd have most likely viewed it as okie dokie. This, however, may be someone's thing but simply is not mine. It is worth a listen to find out for yourself, but if your time is highly limited I would suggest looking elsewhere first.

It had so much potential to be a really great horror story. It's too bad it fell apart mid way and turned into such a mess.

A fun underwater horror story with some echoes of The Abyss and Sphere but with the unmistakable style of Cutter. The story is a bit confusing at times, and the umpteenth appearance of an unspeakable horror capitalizing on childhood traumas gets a bit old after a while, but I still had a very enjoyable time listening to this audiobook.

One of the most disgustingly descriptive horror novels I’ve ever read. This book slings feelings of mental and physical claustrophobia unlike anything I’ve ever read. Truly like if the the shining, the abyss, and the thing had an apocalyptic orgy.

This book is Genuinely disgusting and horrifying in some really exceptional ways. The narrator of this particular audiobook did a fantastic job at the creepy voices and with giving each character their own voice. The writing itself is well done - delightfully varied diction, thoughtful, deeply psychotic, well researched, and overall, does a good job of diving into the nightmare-scape.

My only hangup is that the nightmares and flashbacks become mildly repetitive towards the end, and the gore is plentiful. That being said, I don't think they took away from the general experience. I won't forget this story (possibly unfortunate). Well written. Great premise. Very relevant to today. I had to listen to this in intervals broken up by happier stories to cleanse the palate.
