About this audiobook

Mixing a dash of Dallas society, a pinch of Janet Evanovich, and murder in the land of big hair, Blue Blood is the first installment in award-winning author Susan McBride's sassy Debutante Dropout mystery series.

To the dismay of her high society mother, Cissy, Dallas heiress Andy Kendricks wants no part of the Junior League life—opting instead for a job as a website designer and a passel of unpedigreed pals. Now her good friend Molly O'Brien is in bad trouble, accused of killing her boss at the local restaurant Jugs.

Though no proper deb would ever set foot in such a sleazy dive, Andy's soon slipping into skintight hot pants and a stuffed triple D bra to gain employment there and somehow help clear Molly's name.

But Andy's undercover lark soon brings her into too-close contact with all manner of dangerous adversaries—including a shady TV preacher, a fanatical Mothers Against Porn activist … and a killer who is none too keen on meddling rich girls.

Andrea Kendricks wears a pony tail in the Land of Big Hair: Dallas. Although her parents represent two of Big D's finest families, her debut gown is hanging unused in the closet more than a decade after it was scheduled; Andy's proud to be a debutante drop-out. She also opted for a small Chicago college, where she majored in art, instead of the college mother chose for her. Now she's designing websites for non-profits. Thank goodness Andy doesn't need earn a living, so she has lots of time for sleuthing. She needs it after a call from an old friend, Mollie O’Brien, who’s in jail for murder. Although not in touch for years despite living in the same town, Mollie and Andy were friends when both of them needed one. Andy hasn't forgotten. Mollie’s a single mom, with a six-year-old son, David, and a waitress job at Jugs, a pub that's claim to fame is waitresses in little Spandex outfits. Mollie's jailed for the murder of her lecherous boss. She admits nicking old Bud Hartman with a knife, strictly in self-defense, then running away. But Mollie convinces Andy she didn't fatally stab Bud. Andy's mother, Cissy, gets a lawyer for Mollie, but doesn't want her daughter involved with “that scholarship girl” and her problems. Police are convinced they have the murderer -- and so, unfortunately, is Brian Malone, Mollie's attorney. Andy is not impressed with him and decides she has to take on the investigation herself. If she can get a job at Jugs, she can find out what really happened. Andy is "jug-deficient" and so she gives nature a little boost -- and tells a whopper of a lie -- to get the job. Blue Blood is played strictly for laughs -- it is funny. Andy is an independent sort, a loyal friend and a loving daughter, despite her rebellion against Cissy's dreams for her future. Readers will be hard pressed to find anything to not like about Andy. The plot is simple, the writing straightforward and the story doesn't bog down anywhere. It’s a light and lighthearted mystery, a quick read I very much enjoyed. By Diana. First published in Mystery News, February-March 2004.Review based on publisher- or author-provided review copy.

As with most amateur detective stories, I had to work a little at suspending my disbelief over the web-designer heroine getting involved in the search for a murderer in order to clear her long-lost friend, but once I did, I enjoyed the book overall. (And I must say that I kind of liked she was a trust fund baby who could pretty much decide what she wanted to do with her day. Gives much more credence to stopping everything to take this on.)Mystery-wise, it wasn't bad at all. I had a sense of who the murderer was, but I didn't feel like it was overly obvious. I liked the heroine -- there were a couple of laugh out loud moments -- and I enjoyed the other characters. (The mom was my favorite, I had to admit.) The ending did try my patience a bit -- I can buy the whole putting yourself in jeopardy thing once, but twice was annoying. As the first in a series, however, I'm definitely up for the next one.

Interesting up to a point. Took a while for me to get into the storyline. It also sounds like this rich girl's life was a bit on the boring side too. Will read another to see if it gets better.

Cute and fun but not real deep.

Andy is a web designer who tries to live within her means and avoid the social complications of her priviledged family in the Park Cities, Dallas' most prestigious area. Her mother, Cissy is determined to draw her back into society. When a friend from school is implicated in a murder, Andy jumps in to help clear her. This is the first of the Debutante Dropout Mysteries and like most cozy mysteries is character driven more than plot driven. I enjoyed the characters, particularly Cissy, who is a classic strong southern woman.

I loved this book and was very happy to hear that it was part of a series. I have the other books in my TBR pile and know I will enjoy them when I get to them.
