      In 1966 two children are playing on the beach when they meet two retired men. Gradually their story unfolds. One of the men is German and a survivor of the sinking of the warship Bismarck which was destroyed by the British during World War II. The other was the British soldier who saved the German man's life. Taken Prisoner of War, the German was billeted out with a host family who lived on a farm near the beach. He made friends with their daughter, 10-year-old Grace, and gave her with a wooden Dachshund called Little Manfred, painted brown with red wheels, when the war was over and he left the farm. Coincidentally, Grace is the mother of the two children. Twenty years later the little wooden dog is placed in the Imperial War Museum.

      Lovely story based on the true story of a toy dog made by German prisoners of war that is now in the Imperial War Museum. The kind of book I could imagine reading to a group of children and them all being completely gripped by it.
