About this audiobook

"The writing is humorous, painful, awesome in its effect on both mind and heart…There are few modern novels to match it." —Rolling Stone

On an arid Mars, local bigwigs compete with Earth-bound interlopers to buy up land before the Un develops it and its value skyrockets. Martian Union leader Arnie Kott has an ace up his sleeve, though: an autistic boy named Manfred who seems to have the ability to see the future. In the hopes of gaining an advantage on a Martian real estate deal, powerful people force Manfred to send them into the future, where they can learn about development plans. But is Manfred sending them to the real future or one colored by his own dark and paranoid filter? As the time travelers are drawn into Manfred's dark worldview in both the future and present, the cost of doing business may drive them all insane.

Author

Philip K. Dick

Over a writing career that spanned three decades, PHILIP K. DICK (1928–1982) published 36 science fiction novels and 121 short stories in which he explored the essence of what makes man human and the dangers of centralized power. Toward the end of his life, his work turned to deeply personal, metaphysical questions concerning the nature of God. Eleven novels and short stories have been adapted to film, notably Blade Runner (based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?), Total Recall, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly, as well as television's The Man in the High Castle. The recipient of critical acclaim and numerous awards throughout his career, including the Hugo and John W. Campbell awards, Dick was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2005, and between 2007 and 2009, the Library of America published a selection of his novels in three volumes. His work has been translated into more than twenty-five languages.

It may not be right to censor or modify a dated work, but flagging it would be appropriate. I'm less than an hour in, and I've heard the racist "N word" used close to 20 times already.

Yes, the character speaking it is meant to be unsympathetic-- that may be the main reason the author put this language in his mouth. But I don't feel like hearing it, so I'm stopping here. Might be nice for folks to get a heads up beforehand.

Fun ride. I always enjoy pkd's mind trips. Sometimes scary how much I can relate to his more unbalanced (face it, all his characters are unbalanced) characters...

Probably one of the worst books I’ve ever finished. I ended up finishing it hoping it had some redeeming qualities because of the author’s fame and my interest in scifi but the book was poorly written, the plot is weak, and the idealisms of the author were brought to bare heavily on the book for no good reason. There was a surprising amount of racism, sexism and misogyny even for the time it was written, and not even as part of a character, just as a whole. The general plot was weak and seemed as if somebody tried slightly harder than a middle-schooler would to write a short story post vaguely reading the DSM. Not at all worth the time.
