About this audiobook

New York Times bestselling author Karen Robards continues her penchant for “fantastic storytelling” (RT Book Reviews) with this heart-pumping and nail-biting tale of a brilliant ornithologist trapped on the remote Attu Island in Alaska, fighting for her life—and that of a handsome stranger—before they’re swallowed up in darkness forever.

Ornithologist Dr. Gina Solomon, PhD, can’t believe her good fortune when she’s picked as one of a small group of Stanford University scientists lucky enough to be allowed to conduct research on Attu Island, Alaska. But a dream come true soon turns into a nightmare when she witnesses the horrifying break-up of a small plane. As the pieces rain down around her into the frigid waters of the Bering Sea, Gina heads toward the crash site looking for survivors and discovers James "Cal" Callahan. But when the two realize the plane crash wasn’t an accident—and that the individuals responsible are still on the island—will they escape before they’re swallowed up in darkness forever?

Set against the harsh wilderness of Alaska, Darkness is yet another of Robards’s “scintillating romantic thrillers” (Publishers Weekly) featuring the well-paced suspense and twists that has made Robards an icon in the romance genre.

Note: I listened to this as an audiobook while doing other work, so my review needs to be received within this context = might have reviewed differently, if paying 100% attention to it, rather than multi-tasking.

Didn't expect to enjoy this book so much. Karen Robards has a tendency to use a narrative over and over again - simply tweaking it & changing the characters and circumstances but otherwise, repeating the same formula. In this case, there are elements of that as well - and it's why, when reading the synopsis I put off listening to the audiobook of it. But it is different enough to read or listen to, in my opinion. There are many layers to the story and interesting character development. Also, very suspenseful and not too much ink wasted on love scenes (I enjoy them as much as the next person, but not if they dominate the book and overshadow the suspense).
Should add that Brittany Pressley did a great job narrating this, as well.

The concept was interesting, but I found the writing to be sub-par and lackluster. Further, the stock characters weren't very interesting, and there weren't any real surprises in the narrative. In short, cool idea, horrible execution. This was my first experience with John Saul, and to be honest, it will probably be my last.

Rating: 3 of 5An entertaining, one time read. Interesting spin on "vampires" as well as youth, aging, and the soul.Side note: My first time reading John Saul.

I actually felt like I could see everything the author was describing. She gave such detail I thought it was wonderful. I loved the storyline it held my attention the entire time. Lots of suspense and romance. The only thing I was disappointed in was that it ended. It left me even wanting more. I’d definitely recommend this book!!

I read this book in one sitting. Loved it! Yes, as some other reviewers have said there was a little too much description, especially in the beginning, but a lot of it was necessary. I could almost feel myself being lost in that frozen landscape, fighting for survival against the elements. The plot raced along, taking me with it.A great read.

Another author where it has been a little while since I have read a book from. I was first drawn to this book by the eye catching, colorful book cover. Having read some books by this author I knew what I was in for and was ready to jump in. While I did like this book I felt like it could have been better. The intensity level was just middle of the road and it never really got cranked up. Even the romance between Gina and Cal was "just ok". Part of this was because of Cal's attitude. I understand his reasons for being abrupt towards Gina but in turn this caused me to find him some what off putting. So when they first kissed I did not feel any passion. Although, this book was a quick read.

Seriously surprised how much I enjoyed this one. There's a theme of plane crashes that runs through the book. The setting: an ornithologist and a 'private contractor' stranded on an isolated, icy island in Alaska trying to stay away from the bad guys while battling the elements. I was wondering whether there would be enough there to make this into a gripping romantic suspense story considering the majority of the plot involves the two main characters interacting. But wow, Karen Robards surely did. This was full of action, adventure, suspense and hot romance. The attraction between Gina, the serious but strong professor/ornithologist, and Cal, the mysterious guy whose life Gina saves, builds up slowly and develops from mistrusting each other to having to cooperate to stay alive. There were parts that reminded me of the Indiana Jones movies, in a fun and entertaining way. There was more emphasis on the suspense part of the story but Karen Robards definitely knows how to include and write steamy scenes.I haven't read any of Karen Robards's other books, but will definitely remedy that now.If you enjoy romantic suspense novels, don't miss this one.I received a copy via NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review.
