Book Description:Beautiful, creative, a little wild… Edie was the kind of girl who immediately caused a stir when she walked into your life. And she had dreams back then—but it didn’t take long for her to learn that things don’t always turn out the way you want them to. Now, at thirty-three, Edie is working as a waitress, pregnant and alone. And when she becomes overwhelmed by the needs of her new baby and sinks into a bleak despair, she thinks that there’s no one to turn to… But someone’s been watching Edie, waiting for the chance to prove once again what a perfect friend she can be. It’s no coincidence that Heather shows up on Edie’s doorstep, just when Edie needs her the most. So much has passed between them—so much envy, longing, and betrayal. And Edie’s about to learn a new lesson: those who have hurt us deeply—or who we have hurt—never let us go, not entirely…My Review:This is a story of two teenage girls who had a twisted friendship. The narrator switches each chapter with Heather telling the past story and Edie the present. It is very well-written and the characters are very believable. It'a about obsession, jealousy, betrayal and stalking and is a real page-turner. You can see how teenage problems carry into adulthood and their affect on a person's life. It's creepy and suspenseful and you need to keep reading in order to find out what happened long ago. The ending is a shocker that I didn't see coming. I would definitely read more by this author and I would highly recommend this book to those who love psychological thrillers.

This was a brilliant psychological thriller. Edie is about to become a single mother. Alone and pretty much friendless in her drab tiny apartment, cut off from her family except for an uncle that she has kept in touch with. Out of the blue after more than a decade, she is shocked to get a visit from her former friend Heather,... She is not at all happy to see her and right away I was struck with such a feeling of dread. The story is told in both the present, from Edie's point of view, and the past in Heather's point of view. Slowly we are let in on the secrets that tore these friends apart. It left me wondering almost until the reveal near the end whether Edie had done something horrible to Heather or whether Heather had done something horrible to Edie. Was Heather some sort of Psycho who latched on to Edie and wanted her to herself or was it Edie who had done something unforgivable to Heather? You will have to read for yourself and find out.

I spent almost a full day starting and stopping four or five new books. Absolutely nothing was holding my attention and at some point I just have to realize that not everything is for everyone and there are too many books to suffer through something I’m not interested in. Maybe I’ll try them at another time. So I moved onto this one...

Love Camilla Way! Amazing book. Too many twists and unexpected turns to even begin to go into them. But everything worked and I totally loved the ending. Definitely surprising.

Heather and Edie were friends when they were 16, but there was some kind of falling out. They are now in their 30s. Edie long-since moved away and is now pregnant and on her own. After Edie has her baby, she is unable to function, and Heather shows up to take care of them. But once Edie comes to her senses, she can’t get past what happened when they were younger and asks Heather to leave. But Heather doesn’t want to go… The story is told in alternating chapters between Edie in her 30s and Heather at 16, so the reader hears the story from both characters’ perspectives and as things happen at each age. I thought this was very suspenseful; it kept me wanting to read to find out what had happened when they were 16, plus what was going on in “current” day and how things were going to turn out. I did prefer Edie’s viewpoint, but I think it really made a difference for the suspense to get into Heather’s head, as well. I was almost going to “up” my rating just a touch near the end, but the end, itself, was a little too open-ended for me. Some things were tied up, but not everything.

I loved the author's newest book, The Lies We Told, so much I immediately ordered this one. I ended up enjoying this one as well and think Camilla Way does an awesome job at telling these creepy but entertaining stories. Edie is pregnant and alone when a friend from her past comes back into her life. She tries to avoid her but Heather is there for Edie when she needs her most. And let's just say things start to get weird. I was thoroughly entertained and I loved the dual timelines of Edie in the present and Heather's perspective of what happened when they were teenagers. I'll admit even as I was enjoying the story, I couldn't help but think the premise is fairly basic and not really anything we haven't seen before. However, by the end of the novel I came to realize the author managed to craft a complex tale with many layers. I highly recommend giving this book a chance. I read this a few days ago and I'm still thinking about it.

Heather was immediately drawn to Edie. Edie was new in town, she was beautiful and creative, and she didn't know Heather was an outcast. But their friendship gradually starts to deteriorate when Edie falls in love with a handsome bad boy named Connor. All that is in the past now. They're no longer teenagers and they're no longer friends. Edie works as a waitress. She's pregnant and alone. When the baby arrives she becomes overwhelmed and sinks into a depression. There's no one she can turn to for help. Until Heather suddenly shows up at her door and begins to take care of the baby with no questions asked. But there's so much that has been left unspoken, too much has happened when they were teenagers for their friendship to ever go back to the way it was when they first met all those years ago.

This book goes back and forth between before the incident and after. Edie's perspective is told in the present and Heather's is told in the past. I couldn't wait to find out what tore their friendship apart, and when I finally found out, well, it just wasn't what I thought would happen. I think there are so many layers to both characters that ultimately we can see how things shaped them into who they were as teenagers and as adults. I thought Edie really grew as an adult and I did enjoy the very end.

Their relationship has already unraveled when they were teens, but years later it had a forced reconstruction when their individual needs emerge. Both characters took turns telling their story from their own perspective. I began to like one more and one less as the story progressed. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt too afraid to stand up to a bully or to defend a friend.

Three and a half star rating.Edie, the popular one and Heather the loner become friends at school. All Heather wants is to look after her friend and keep her safe, even more so when Edie finds herself a boyfriend. Something happens and the pair lose touch - jump forward to the present time and Edie is pregnant and Heather is here again, to look after her and we discover what went so wrong before. Written then and now by both girls, we get to see what made them be the way they are. The pace of the story was good as we get to know more about these characters who are sadly not too likeable but I did empathise with them at times and could see why they behaved the way they did. There were some creepy moments and the subject was dark, especially towards the end. It was compelling enough to keep turning the pages and I would definitely read other books by this author.

I wasn’t sure what to make of this book. Here were times when I wanted to stop reading because it was slow and non-assuming. But as I continued into the lives of these two women, Edie and Heather, I became intrigued of what happened so many years ago. They were unlikely best friends as teenagers but when Edie started dating Conner, things soured. Something happened that forced Edie to leave their small town and move to London. Many years pass and Heather has found her and tries to integrate herself back into Edie’s life. I found it creepy and questionable, but wanted to know so bad what happened between these two. My guesses were all wrong and the climax was more than I expected and made the story that much more thrilling.

Edie is new girl at school. She's beautiful and a little wild and free and quickly becomes popular; with the popular mean girl friends and her boyfriend, Connor, who is more bad than your typical bad boy. But right before that, she becomes friends with Heather. Heather is Edie's opposite; she's a little overweight, is pretty much the outcast and her parents keep a pretty short leash on her. Heather is obsessed with Edie, Edie is dangerously obsessed with Connor. After the events of one terrible night, Edie runs off, and had two don't see each other again. Fast forward to years later. The events of that night are in the distance and Edie is no longer that girl she used to be. Now, she's waitressing and about to become a single mom when Heather appears again in her life. That's when things get a little weird. Why did Heather seek her out after all this time? What does she want from her? She never mentions the past. At first Edie wants morning to do with her but desperation changes that. As time goes by, I could see a familiar pattern in Heather's behaviour but Edie seems a bit oblivious to it all, as she isn't noticing much these days. The chapters alternate between Edie telling the story of the present while Heather narrates the past. While I have read a lot of books this way before, for some reason my brain had a little difficulty doing the shift. But I did like that; in between the present story being told, some part of the past would be revealed to make more sense to all of it. For the most part I really enjoyed this book although I found it a little slow in parts. There was so much reference to the "incident" in the past, not giving much hint as to what it was, but clearly it was important. I got to the point where I just wanted to get there and I almost peaked through the book to find out what happened all those years ago. The middle to ending I read much faster as I couldn't wait to find out what would happen in both the present and what happened before. It was very suspenseful as it became apparent that maybe something more was going on than Heather just being a little off. This would make a fantastic movie; it'd be a great thriller.

Thank you, FirsttoRead, for my complimentary review copy. The premise of this book intrigued me. I enjoy books about female relationships because the dynamics are oftentimes complicated. Edith(AKA Edie) and Heather were friends in high school. They were an odd pair but they made it work. A traumatic incident led to Edie's leaving. Now, 17 years later, she is alone, pregnant, and working as a waitress. Suddenly, what Edie has been dreaming about and dreading, happened, Heather re-appears. Overwhelmed and lonely, Edie unwittingly accepts her consolation and help. Barely moving from her bed, she is oblivious as Heather moves in and takes over. As Edie slowly comes around and, much to Heather's chagrin, she tries her hand at becoming more of a mother to Maya and getting out more. At Edie's urging, Heather leaves, reluctantly. She becomes friendly with her downstairs neighbor Monica and her two boys. Monica, having fled an abusive relationship, is living in fear. There is also Jim, who Edie first met when she bought her daughter's crib from him. Jim is a single father and teaches art at the local college. Then, when everything is going well in Edie's life, on Christmas Day, another traumatic incident involving Heather upends Edie's world. The chapters alternate from the past("before" narrated in Heather's voice) and the present("after" narrated in Edie's voice). In their past lives, Connor, Edie's boyfriend, and their parents are introduced.Overall, I enjoyed the book. The time shifts are clear, the characters well-developed, and the writing style very readable. I liked the unpredictable ending but only wish that it was not as rushed. I would have liked to read about the culprits being brought to justice. But, given the long time interval, the trail would have gone cold. The implied ending works. I look forward to reading more by this author.

I love this psychological thriller! The book alternates from "before" to "after" a major event in the two characters lives. The "before" is told from Heather's point of view, and the "after" from Edie's. I was not sure what to expect when I started reading "Watching Edie", but the ending left me wondering "what the heck now!!?!?". Very well written, and once you start reading, you will not want to quit.

Before and after. Heather and Edie. High school best friends, one awkward and lonely, the other beautiful and rebellious. Then something terrible happens, and they go their separate ways. But what happened? Fast-forward 17 years, and Edie is a new mother, alone, and unable to care for her new baby. Suddenly, Heather is there, ready to help. But after so many years apart, how did she know?WATCHING EDIE was amazing psychological suspense. I did not want to put this book down! The story is about a friendship gone terribly wrong between Edie and Heather. An incident occurred that tore them apart, but what happened isn't revealed until the end. Heather tells the story before "it" happened, and Edie tells the after. Alternating between the two time periods and also the not knowing "it" part kept me glued to the pages. This was a well-written novel, sad, dark, emotional. What character can be trusted? Some great twists in this book, and when it was all said and done, I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, seriously! Gah! A great read. Haunting.Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Edie is 33 years old, alone and struggling to adapt to being a mother to her infant. Heather is a friend of hers from high school, who appears back in Edie’s life after 16 years of separation. Heather longs to prove to Edie that she still belongs in her life and is willing to help Edie through this difficult time. But the former relationship between Edie and Heather is a very complicated, dark one and will have a serious impact upon their current relationship. The author does an excellent job of building up the suspense and fleshing out the characters, both today and in the past. She gives Heather the job of telling the story of the past while Edie is the present-day narrator. Both are haunted by the past, about which the author drops tantalizing crumbs until the final reveal. I hesitate to say more about the plot of this book in fear of ruining the author’s careful and slow build up. This is a better-than-usual psychological suspense thriller about obsession and deception and the strong desire to be loved. It’s a gripping, intense story and one that I recommend.I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads contest.

Watching Edie tells the story of Edie and Heather who first met when Edie moved to a new school as a teenager. Heather turns up on Edie's doorstep 16 years after the two women last saw each other. The past is revealed from Heather's point of view while the present is narrated by Edie. It is clear from the start that something terrible must have happened all those years ago. I've read several books recently with this devastating-secret-from-the-past plot and the constant switch between present and past, which seems to be used so frequently now, so I was a bit nervous whether this would deliver. It did. Camilla Way created a great cast of dysfunctional people and developed an intriguing plotline with several subplots that left me wondering right to the end whom I should trust and what exactly was happening and had happened. Apart from Monica, who is Edie's neighbor, I can safely say I didn't actually like any of the characters. But that didn't matter at all. This is a great story if you enjoy flawed characters. I was so impressed how the author managed to make me change my feelings towards Heather and Edie throughout the story. A very enjoyable British psychological suspense story. Thanks to Berkley Publishing Group for providing me with an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I would like to thank NAL & NetGalley for a copy of this e-ARC to review. Though I received this ebook for free, that has no impact upon the honesty of my review. Edie and Heather are so very different, yet linked by their unspoken need for love. The balance between the two is wildly off kilter, yet somehow they manage to make their friendship work - for a time. But something happened in their past. Something that changed everything. Something that puts both their futures in jeopardy. These characters are so well crafted, and so easy to relate to on different levels. They each have things that will appeal to almost anyone, which makes the mystery of what happened that much more compelling. It's almost impossible not to like each one at some point in their entwined stories. I love the way we get to know each of them through the telling of each other's tales, and the use of flashbacks which keep us swing from past to present and back again. As the story unfolds our emotions are pulled in all sorts of different directions, and we're led up and down numerous paths as we struggle toward the truth. Yet this all moves so very smoothly, following an extremely intense story arc that keeps the reader turning page after page - long past time to get some sleep. The story is so compelling that I had to struggle to get some sleep, simply because I kept wanting to know what happen next. And I was never once disappointed with this tale - and its most certainly one that will stick with me for a long time to come. I can't recommend this book highly enough! If you like looking at honest, messy, emotional relationships between friends, between women, between lovers, this book is for you. If you enjoy psychological books, this book is for you. In short, this is a must read book!

In many ways Watching Edie by Camilla Way has the markings of the typical pretty girl/homely girl friendship story, but this friendship goes horribly wrong. Edie moves to a small town in England with her single mother. By all accounts she could have any friends she chooses, but she befriends Heather, a girl ostracized and bullied by classmates. Unhealthy and mutually manipulative, the girls’ alliance ends tragically and now several years later Edie is a waitress and about to become a single mother. Her dreams unrealized, living in a shabby London flat, she’s overwhelmed and alone until Heather steps back into her life and the cycle begins again. I was immediately drawn into this story and finished it quite quickly, unable to put it down. That said I was a bit disappointed in the ending. It was unexpected, but written “not with a bang but a whimper.”

This book had some wonderful character development, great writing, some tense scenes, a bit of mystery and even a little romance too. I was a bit disappointed though because I was under the impression this was a thriller but there was not much thriller in the storyline. This book was more about Edie, who has a murky past, and is a former party girl who did a lot of things she regrets in her school days. Apparently, there was some "big night" that changed everything for her and her best friend, Heather, back in their late teens. This night made Edie run away from home and never talk to her mother again. That night is referred to so many times that I wasn't even interested in it anymore by the end of the book, when the big secret was finally revealed. Flash forward years later and Edie is 33 and pregnant. She hasn't accomplished any of her dreams. As a matter of fact, she just hides from the world, waitressing and then spending all of her time alone, living a life of guilt and shame (not that the reader has any clue why). This was where I would have put the book down (had I not been given this book to read and give an unbiased review from NetGalley). First of all, I gave this book 4 stars because the writing was good and when I thought about it, the story was good too. Just because this wasn't for me, I can't penalize the author. Now, I found Edie a weak person, moping around all the time, not getting her life together and making a better person of herself, even when there were people around her trying to help. (I am not talking about her postpartum blues--that is a horrible affliction and I can understand her issues there.) Myself, I prefer a strong central character, one who no one would mess with. My biggest problem with the book though is that I thought it would be a book about a woman being stalked. Yes, there is stalking but that is such a minor part of the book. Most of this book is about Edie's life, her dealing with her feelings, having a new infant, etc. So, if you're going to read this, please know that I personally feel the blurb for the book is a bit off, and if you prefer a strong main character, then this might not be the book you're looking for.

A special thank you to Netgalley and Berkley Publishing Group for an ARC for a honest review. This was a sad and dark twisted psychological thriller that I had a hard time putting down. There are two protaganists in this story, Heather and Edie. They become close friends when each are in a dark place in their lives. The story goes from past to present and each one keeps you guessing as to what has or is going to take place. The two narratives make you question who you trust and who is the evil one. I went back and forth several times during the story. I will definitely look forward to hearing more from this author!
