About this audiobook

"As Vergil had surpassed Homer by adapting the epic form to celebrate the origin of the author’s nation, Milton developed it yet further to recount the origin of the human race itself and, in particular, the origin of and the remedy for evil; this is what he refers to as “things unattempted yet in prose or rhyme.”

After a statement of its purpose, the poem plunges, like its epic predecessors, into the midst of the action, shockingly bringing to the front the traditional visit to the underworld, for Satan’s malice is the mainspring of the negative action. But at the center of the poem lies the triumph by the Son of God over the angelic rebels, which counteracts Satan’s evil design. To preview this pattern, the fallen angels’ council in hell is counterbalanced by a council in heaven, in which the Son offers himself as a scapegoat for mankind long before the original sin has been committed.

With this background, the narrator introduces us to Eden and our “Grand Parents.” Satan is detected spying on them and is expelled from the garden, after which God sends an angel to tutor Adam and Eve in the history of the heavenly war that has led to the present situation. At Adam's request, the heavenly guest then recounts the creation of the visible world, explaining also the proper nature of development, whereby all things proceed from lower to higher by refining that which nourishes them.

Satan, however, returning in the form of a snake, offers Eve an evolutionary shortcut in the form of a magical food capable of endowing her with super powers. He claims it has conferred on him both reason and speech. Since Eve is suffering at the moment from a fancied slight to her moral strength, she allows herself to forget her recent lesson and yields to this temptation. Adam, unable to imagine life without Eve (and failing to explore alternatives to sin), accepts the fruit from her and eats as well.

John Milton

John Milton was a seventeenth-century English poet, polemicist, and civil servant in the government of Oliver Cromwell. Among Milton’s best-known works are the classic epic Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, considered one of the greatest accomplishments in English blank verse, and Samson Agonistes. Writing during a period of tremendous religious and political change, Milton’s theology and politics were considered radical under King Charles I, found acceptance during the Commonwealth period, and were again out of fashion after the Restoration, when his literary reputation became a subject for debate due to his unrepentant republicanism. T.S. Eliot remarked that Milton’s poetry was the hardest to reflect upon without one’s own political and theological beliefs intruding.

❤❤❤Beautifully printed with all 12 of Blake's superb colour illustrations. Useful introduction but no line numbering. For detailed notes consider also buying Caroline Moore's Connell guide. John milton and his amazing mind is created a magical place in shape of a poem. The vision is great. Worth reading. The notes is usefull to understand and helpful to the scholars. But i think that penguin is need to improve their paper quality.❤❤❤

I taught Milton (even courses specifically on Paradise Lost) for some time, as to Milton claiming Divine Inspiration, there is a problem there, he does ask god to aid him, yet he also sates with words 'unattemted yet in prose or rhyme'. That includes the Holy Bible.

There are mainly two factions in the reading of PL (odd, same as two factions on the Aeneid): one who just kill it, by saying that Milton wanted to support canonical religious beliefs, the other that proposes the opposite. However, I'd rather think Milton believed in both, or in all. When reading Milton, one needs to remember that his mind worked by metanoia, that is, his main way of reasoning was 'however'. Stanley Fish wrote a whole long piece on one single incident of Miltonic 'howevers' (got it the concept right but worked on it from the wrong perspective, maybe because he thought too much of himself as a reader [pathetic academic in-joke, Stanley Fish is the father of reader-response criticism] and didn't learn from Milton, but wanted Milton to conform to his views...) anyway, whenever Milton says something he also suggests something else. I think this means not only that he is constantly asking questions about alternatives, but, in my view, he believed, and quite strongly, that alternative truths not only are possible, but co-exist and explain each other...

When you read PL, always look at where he suggests a pause, then changes the meaning next. He makes you think one thing, then tells you the other, from the very first line...

If you want to crack PL, you need to start by the great luminary who really cracked it fully, Professor Christopher Ricks, then move any way you wish from there.

I think that Paradise Lost is a great book. Although it is tough to read because of the fact that it is an epic poem, it still has held my interest more than any other book i have read. Each line that Milton writes is very interesting, and the plot of the book itself is very unique which also makes it a very good book.

My only question on the book is about John Milton. I would want to ask Milton how he thought of what to write while putting the words in such well written form.

This book is totally interesting. I would have probably found it more worthwhile as some reseach blog on the internet than an actual book though. Does contain interesting information and absolutely help readers.this book made my mind so clam.this is a best book i have read so far. This book is very much important and influecive for every one to change their life and get success in every steps of their life.Paradise Lost as a work of theology and cosmology, some massive epic design is of cantos and books dealing with the Original Sin and the Temptation and Fall of Man from Heaven in a very sublime way with the rebellion, revolt of Satan replete with fiery speeches and characterization planned and executed so nicely to arrange for an overthrow, but the ways for redemption, salvation seem to be losing track of when dismal light for bleak hope pervades in the spirit and no way out seems to be possible. A book of God, Man and Satan, it is a discourse in Divinity; it is an attempt to comprehend the ways of God to man, a justification of the same as for reaching unto Him and that too how? One can through virtue, good deeds, submission, purity of heart. Satan as a character represents the spirit of revolt, liberation, rebellion, imaginative opposition and has the power and guts to stand against.i highly recommend to every one to read this book.

I have been thinking of writing a major biblical poetic work since I started writing spiritual poetry for about four years now. The idea of reading Milton had been on the back burner for years. I read it through lightly, as I am not versed in the classics, but was looking for inspiration from the poem for my own project. This is most likely due to the book not being packaged tightly in the cardboard and so it has probably moved about quite a lot.

Milton opens Paradise Lost by formally declaring his poem’s subject: humankind’s first act of disobedience toward God, and the consequences that followed from it. The act is Adam and Eve’s eating of the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, as told in Genesis, the first book of the Bible. In the first line, Milton refers to the outcome of Adam and Eve’s sin as the “fruit” of the forbidden tree, punning on the actual apple and the figurative fruits of their actions. Milton asserts that this original sin brought death to human beings for the first time, causing us to lose our home in paradise until Jesus comes to restore humankind to its former position of purity.
