    Gaston Leroux (1868-1927), Studium der Rechtswissenschaft in Paris, bis 1893 als Anwalt tätig, zeitgleich literarische und journalistische Arbeiten, engagierter Kriminalberichterstatter für L'Écho de Paris und Le Matin (etwa über den Gerichtsprozess gegen den Anarchisten Auguste Vaillant oder über die Dreyfuss-Affäre), vehementer Gegner der Todesstrafe. Von 1896 bis 1906 Korrespondent in verschiedenen Ländern Europas, Afrikas und Asiens. Reportagen u.a. über die schwedische Antarktisexpedition von Nordenskjöld, den russisch-japanischen Krieg sowie über die Unruhen in Odessa, St. Petersburg und Marokko. 1907 erscheint mit "Le Mystère de la Chambre jaune" (dt. Das Geheimnis des gelben Zimmers) ein Kriminalroman, der zum Klassiker seines Genres avanciert. Dem deutschsprachigen Publikum ist Gaston Leroux vor allem durch seinen 1910 erschienenen Roman "Le Fantôme de l'Opéra" (dt. Das Phantom der Oper) bekannt geworden. Im selben Jahr publiziert Le Matin in 161 Folgen seinen Fortsetzungsroman "La Reine du Sabbat". Dieser "roman noir fantastique" ist "das absolute Meisterwerk" (Alain Fuzellier) des 1927 verstorbenen Autors, dessen Romane seit einigen Jahren in Frankreich eine Renaissance erleben.

      As a fan of the phantom of the Opera musical I was very interested to know the story behind it, I have the book but finding the audio version I was thrilled to be able to sit back and listen and learn more of the man behind the mask. An unsual but beautiful story and the narrator is very good as though taking on the character of the famous author himself.
