Teen fiction; realistic. Memorable characters and lots of little plot developments make the story carry along easily. I could easily recommend this to a teenaged girl (our school librarian regularly does, mostly selling it on the basis of the book jacket alone). The narrator does a pretty good job on this recording.

Mara is the super achiever A student involved in multiple activities and on the fast track to Yale. Enter her one-year-younger niece and her feelings for her older boss that cause her to re-evaluate her life and goals. It is sad to see her opt for the ordinary at the end.

I really like this book, because it's a easy read. This book is about the life of a teenager, called Mara Valentine and troubles that happen during her school days. She is one of those goodie goodie daughters and students who gets straight -As in every topic and has a perfect future ahead. She plans to fast-track college into second year at Yale. However, things don't go smoothly when her pot smoking niece called V comes to stay with her. The book is interesting in how Mara struggles and manages with her niece and other incidents in the book. The more her niece stays, the more of "perfectness" of Mara vanishes away. It explores how two girls of completely different characters come to like each other and change some aspects of their lives.Cathy

I picked this up in a book sale and didn't really expect much beyond a fluffy light read. What I actually discovered is that this is a fresh, breezy and relatable YA novel that I will be happily keeping on my shelf for next time I need something fun to cheer me up! Mara Valentine is perfect. She has the perfect grades, the perfect extra-curriculars, the perfect future, and the perfect plan to get there. In between organising student events and liaising with her teachers, she is planning a fast-track summer of college courses so that she can enter Yale as a second year. Then, to her horror, her wild, pot-smoking 15 year-old niece V arrives and turns her life upside down - and as if this wasn't enough to contend with, she also realises that she is falling for her handsome older boss James. The novel explores how these two completely different girls' lives converge. V can teach Mara a thing or two about living life to the full - and about how there's more to life than what grades you get. Meanwhile Mara and her parents slowly begin to instil in V a sense of stability, pride and family loyalty, encouraging her to pursue her talents and study more. If only they could stop treating each other like alien enemies, life in the Valentine house might even become pleasant again...I really enjoyed Mara and V's journey! I think that anyone who has ever felt the weight of expectation hanging over them during their academic years can relate to Mara - particularly if things haven't always quite gone to plan. I was cheering for her every step of the way! I think that the moral of the story is very sound: that academics are important, but that you can't be good at everything, you can't do it all, and there are other important things in life that can't be graded, like love, friendship, great books, great movies, exciting trips, and taking time to enjoy the world around you. Parents and teachers aren't always right, and ultimately you'll have to make your own decisions. It's worth mentioning that there are a couple of scenes of mild drug use, and Mara is old enough to go off to university so there's a bit of sexy spiciness between her and James. For that reason alone, I'd be cautious about recommending it to the youngest end of the YA spectrum, but it's a fantastic little read for the older teen market. I'll be keeping Vegan Virgin Valentine on my shelves, and picking up Guyaholic, the second V Valentine novel, at some point too!

Really enjoyed this book. I think Mara was a bit anal and I really loved V's character though I would have liked to have seen her character developed more.

Crazy niece V comes to stay at her house, and Mara begins to look at the world around her. Mara is a vegan who is aiming for for top spot in her graduating class. Her ex-boyfriend is neck-and-neck with her on grades. V comes to town and makes out big time with the ex the first day at school. How will Mara cope, with her slutty niece (only one year younger than her), her school aspirations, and her growing affection for the older man who owns the coffee house where she works. Plus she craves grilled cheese sandwiches! What is a girl to do?

Okay, so here's the deal about Vegan Virgin Valentine. It's a good story, I won't deny it. It has interesting quirky characters and a good set-up with V being Mara's niece and all. The writing's pretty good as well. But here's what it's lacking--interest. Nothing much happens. It's all flatlined, really. The story plays a little too deeply into high school stereotypes, and Mara's just a boring character, reminding me of straight-A overachieving little Rory Gilmore. It's a cliche story, but it's still pretty cute. I was just a little saddened to see everything work itself out so conveniently, with no big climax or anything. The plot moves slowly, and it does come to a point where everything slowly, lazily builds up, but there's no explosion of a moment. It's as cool and laid-back at the ending as it is through the rest of the book. Not a bad story, just could have used a bit of life and energy.Rating: 3.5/5

Another interesting title by Carolyn Mackler. I think teens can relate to the events that occur in this book. It had an interesting ending. Although her books are entertaining, I have a couple of problems with them: the adults aren't very realistic and the endings are happily tied up, with all of the problems solved. Good, light read. (Lanuage and some sexual activity--but not explicit)

Mara Valentine is in her senior year of high school and is running neck and neck with one other student to be valedictorian of her class. When her teenage niece, Vi, comes to live with her family, Mara is expected to be a mentor and friend to her. But they are so different! Vi smokes, doesn't attend class, makes out with anyone who is willing and is totally indifferent to Mara and her family. As the year progresses, Mara falls in love with an "older man" and begins to learn that there is more to life than academics and that maybe Vi isn't so bad after all. This is an easy read, kind of a "year in the life" of a teenager. There are no real surprises; it's pretty predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless.

This book was funny and full of girl power. I loved rooting for Mara as she faced her challenges. It was also good to see her breaking out of her shell and taking control of her own life. She's been doing so many things for her parents and people around her and she was finally doing things for herself. It was a good story about self-achievement and second chances and love.

Not a bad book. It's pretty typical YA stuff... girl stressed out with school work, having to deal with a new relative moving in and shaking up life at school, asserting her independence with the parents, and falling in love with an older guy. I liked the characters though and was fairly entertained throughout.

Mara's life was perfect until she was told that her niece - one year younger than her, would be moving in with her family. Now V is making out with Mara's ex, and creating a bad rep for herself at school and chasing Mara out of every place she feels comfortable.

Senior Mara Valentine has got the most well-put-together life. She got in early decision to Yale, is chairperson of numerous committees, holds down a steady job at a locally owned coffee shop, and is determined to beat her ex, Travis, in the valedictory race. In short, she's all set on breaking out of Brockport, New York. However, in the second half of her senior year, Mara's niece (yes, niece), who calls herself V, comes to the school. V is a self-proclaimed slut and stoner. Mara hates her, mostly on principle, but also because she hooks up with Travis on the very first day of school. But things are changing for Mara and V. V lands a leading role in the school musical, and Mara finds herself falling in love with the coffee shop's owner, James. With both girls shedding their previous masks and carefully carved facades, aunt and niece inevitably grow closer. While not as impressive as her first two books, VEGAN VIRGIN VALENTINE is nevertheless an entertaining read. The characters lack depth, but Carolyn Mackler has got the teenage language down right.
