- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Secrets was a really interesting book and I'm definitely glad I read it. I was very intrigued by the premise and it sounded like a book I could really lose myself in and enjoy. I love books that help me relax and that are easy to read- Secrets was certainly one of those books!
The opening of the book caught my attention and from there, I knew I would have no problem reading to the very last page. I needed to know what was going on and I wanted everything to work out for these mysterious characters! They were well written, believable and easy to empathise with. Tess, while admittedly silly and impulsive, was a fun character and I found it easy to like her. Joe definitely took some getting used to and I still don't think he's the nicest guy around but I grew to accept the way he was and his nice side completely shone by the end!
Was Secrets amazing? Not really, but it was very good. It had one or two things that bugged for. I think it was dragged out too much and could have been condensed down by at least a hundred pages. I also really wasn't feeling the relationship between Tess and her daughter. It felt like Em wasn't really there most of the time and Tess didn't really seem to engage with her. Other than those two things, I thought it was an immensely enjoyable book and at no point was I bored or contemplating stopping.
Secrets is certainly worthy of four stars and I am eager to read more of Freya North's work in the future as I do think she has talent. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5How far is too far to carry a childhood crush? Casandra Madden fell in love with Jefferson Ames when she was twelve years old. Now she's his nanny, and he's engaged. Awkward? You betcha.Complicating matters, he's CIA and responsible for protecting an aging actress (don't ask). The plot is complex, far-fetched, and weak, and the characters aren't all that endearing. Give this one a miss and read Wishes or one of Deveraux's other older titles instead.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Cassie Madden fell in love with Jeff Ames when she was 12 years old and he was a young man of 20-something. Years later, as an adult, she manages to land a job at his home as his daughter's nanny. Still in love with Jeff, now a widower, she takes care of his daughter, his father, and his home and he still doesn't seem to know she exists. But Cassie is beginning to realize that Jeff isn't all that he seems. He has secrets. Secrets that have something to do with his father and the woman in the mansion next door…Althea Fairmont, world's greatest actress. Cassie needs to know what these secrets are before she can continue to hope for a life with Jeff.Jude Deveraux is a favorite author, but her writing is not always top-notch. In this story, he dialogue seems stilted and the story a little far-fetched. There are too many plotlines going on at one time and they are only loosely connected. The story is entertaining, but not one of her best.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I really enjoyed this to start with, the description of moving to a new town and house, and the development of relationships with people there. But when the main couple got together I found myself getting irritated by all the stupid behaviour, and the "secrets" weren't really that shocking and there was no good reason to keep them hidden for so long! I do like Freya North and have read others, but this isn't one of her best!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Although this is the first book I have ever read by Jude Deveraux, I have seen her name all over book sites and the web for some time. I was under the impression that she was just a good romance author, and so when I picked up the book, I figured that was what I would be reading. Something light and nice with a basic romance plot.Nothing could be further from the truth! I now understand why this author is a best-selling novelist. She is so much more than a typical romance novelist. She is a master as romantic suspense writing, and I was completely engrossed in this book. There was so much I appreciated about this novel. It had a strong romantic story--which was what I was initially looking for. In addition to this, she added a fantastically suspenseful plot with lots of twists and turns. I remember thinking halfway through that I was not even assured what would happen at the end! Would it even end how I thought it should?I would certainly put Jude Deveraux in the same category as Agatha Christie, and that is saying something. I found myself not wanting to put this book down once a chapter finished because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. There was never a dull moment in this book, and the writing was dynamic! The other thing I appreciated about this book was the absence of steamy sex scenes. While sex was mentioned as having happened, it was not described in detail. I also appreciated the absence of vulgar language. There was an occasional mild word, but nothing that was truly horrendous. This author has easily become one of my favorite romance novelists, and I can hardly wait to read more of her books. I now know why she is considered one of the greats!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The book opens with Tess and her daughter Em hiding from someone who is banging on their door. Tess then takes a job as a house sitter for Joe, a world travelling bridge builder. She takes her ancient car, her meager belongings, and heads to Saltburn and escape. When she gets to the house, she discovers a large seaside home complete with handsome owner and large scruffy dog. Tess and Joe work out her work schedule and Tess settles into a routine. She works on the house, meets the locals, and starts to develop an attraction to Joe. Joe on the other hand, has a girl in every port where he goes to work. He starts to find comfort in having Tess at home for him when he returns, but he is not ready to give up his life and freedom. There are other forces at work in the relationship; both have secrets that will cause problems.I really enjoyed this book. It was interesting to see Tess become part of the Saltburn community and become less fearful about her life. She builds a whole new life for herself and her daughter that may or may not be permanent. Her secret is always there ready to come out but the reader likes Tess and hopes it is something that can be resolved. Joe is a nice guy who sometimes behaves selfishly, especially when he starts to have feeling for Tess but continues his freewheeling ways. His secret comes out earlier and doesn’t add to the nice column but there is a twist that is revealed later. Both Tess and Joe have to put the past behind them and work towards happiness. The telling of the routines of their lives helps us understand them and what their issues are. Loved the book, loved the ending
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I have loved Jude Devereaux's books every since I was a teenager. However, though it is sad to say this is the first time that I could not finish one of her books. The beginning was promising...by this I mean the first chapter. After that it is confusing and not interesting at all. A huge disappointment.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I've decided this book is my new instruction manual for how to live my life. Who needs self-help when you've got Jude Deveraux? The moral of the story is if I go out of my way to be nice, caring and considerate to boys I like, they'll take me for granted and treat me like crap. Instead, I should be cool, combative, and mysterious. In addition, sashaying around in a pair of trousers (not jeans) and wiggling my butt a lot won't hur
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Quite a good, suspenseful romance story. I think Jude Deveraux is one of the best writers of today!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I picked this book up at the book fair and was happily surprised by it. The story focuses on Tess, a woman with a secret and a child, who becomes the house-sitter for Joe, a successful man with his own secrets. Their relationship comes closer together, pulls apart and generally bumps along the road of what we love in a good romantic chick-lit. Enjoyable.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Whilst I generally avoid the whole genre of "chick lit", Freya North is always a class above the rest. If you have read any others of her books, then this will be a welcome more of the same. A page-turner, yet gentle and satisfying - the thing I love about her books above all else is that the characters are so likeable and kind without being sappy. This novel in particular had a well developed sense of place (Saltburn) which made me want to visit for a coffee some time soon.
