About this audiobook
Max Adams explores Britain's lost early medieval past by walking its paths and exploring its lasting imprint on valley, hill and field. From York to Whitby, from London to Sutton Hoo, from Edinburgh to Anglesey and from Hadrian's Wall to Loch Tay, each of his ten walk narratives form a portrait of a Britain of fort and fyrd, crypt and crannog, church and causeway, holy well and memorial stone.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5As an audiobook this lacks the maps that make it so much easier to see where in the UK the author is writing about. Instead it becomes hard to follow the intricate details of his walks. The Earlier chapters I found easier and followed them on my phone based os map app mainly because google gave me these chapters free so I could view the walking trail and relate to my OS map. In terms of the writing it jumps between trivial details of the walk and surroundings then deep historical context. I think I needed a timeline to put together all the facts I was getting overloaded with in each chapter. Without this I simply had a patchwork of medieval knowledge thrown at me. Otherwise a pleasant read.
